!@ Close Encounters of the Third Kind 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition Blu ray

There are all 3 versions included in this offering. The Blu-Ray transfer seems to maybe have been done mostly for the original version. There are places in the Special Edition and Director's cut versions that seem NOT to have been put through the Blu-Ray process... for example, in the darker scenes the graininess seems more evident. When Roy Neary is out at those R/R tracks and is lost and has his Encounter of the 2nd kind, there is quite a lot of graininess going on. Also at the beginning in the sandstorm and for other "night" scenes... however, during the rest of the film the picture is really great. So, once again it looks as though the people doing the Blu-Ray transfer AGAIN cut corners and tried to save money by not applying the process to the whole film. - Bottom line, this is a great movie and I think I can overlook the fact it is not perfect and still enjoy all 3 versions. But, the PQ is not pristine nor perfect, just mostly great.

I like this movie for its atmosphere and attitude. It's mostly night, there is a bar fight or some other kind of fight every 15 minutes or more often. Other illegalities abound (with houses and cars burnt down etc), sex, alcohol and the smell of violence are ever-present. It's a world of its own, with never a cop in sight and the house band always carrying on performing no matter how big a bar fight is taking place around them, and the surprisingly intense atmosphere - you can smell the hot summer Saturday night - draws you in. There's something of a mythical America here (in a modern Western style), at least for a European viewer like me. True, it's a child of its time, but you are meant to take this in a certain way to appreciate it.

!$ Ultimate Avengers Collection Blu ray

Ok - I'll admit that I really liked comic books as a kid in the 70s and I was into the Avengers, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, Spiderman, etc. Well I say this on Blockbuster and decided to rent it because I thought interesting. Well I'm really glad I didn't buy it because I really didn't like it. First of all it changed characters in a way that I really didn't like. Captain America was OK but seemed to second guess himself more than I remember. Ironman was dumb, weak, and an unlikeable person. Same for Ant Man. Banner was a whining, rat faced, weak and dislikeable character. Nick Furry was now a young black man and a general to boot. Maybe like a Doctor Who time lord he regenerated. Thor was a hippie nut case that got knocked out permanently by the Hulk with Thor's own hammer? I don't remember the Hulk ever being able to lift Thor's hammer and he tried many times in the comics I read as a kid. The plot made no sense. Aliens from WWII try to nuke the Allies, Capt America stops them and gets frozen (I remember him getting frozen but where's the Red Skull?), the aliens are still on earth with only 3 ships and SHIELD is trying to track them, their ships are made of a metal that absorbs all energy directed at it but Thor takes one out with lighting(???),Iron Man's armor get's dented by the Hulk (I remember Iron Man knocking the Hulk out with that armor once?), etc.



Well I'm too old to know that Marvel decided it was time to shake things up and create a new story called The Ultimates which loosely bases itself on the original Avengers. Once I googled it and read what it was all about, I figured out that this movie is based on The Ultimates without the dark attitudes from the comics. Thor is now a green peace wuzie who may be actually a mental patient, Iron Man is a drunk dark figure, Capt America is an over zealot nationalist, Banner is insecure whining weakling, Giant-Man is an arrogant idiot, and not they fight against the "Chitauri" who look a lot like HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu (oops - I said his name so I guess he's going to eat my soul).



Well what can I say, I'm glad I didn't read this dribble of the times. I don't care to waste my limited time for entertainment reading about how there really are no "noble" heroes anymore and the world and the people in it suck. If that's what the world was really like, then let the aliens have it and destroy it because it's basically a hell on earth.



Anyways, returning to the movie, it tries to go off the dark version as portrayed by The Ultimates but is scared to go there fully so it straddles it with the pseudo noble characters of the original Avengers. I my opinion it fails miserably because for people like me who do not like The Ultimates and like the original Avengers, this movie sucks and is inconsistent with what we know from the comics. For the people who like the darker Ultimates and hate the boy scouts of the original Avengers, they won't like this movie because it didn't go far enough. All in all the movie stinks.

Besides the incredible performance delivered both by the American actors and the Japanese ones, this is the kind of movie that should be considered as "cult". If you ever wandered by Japanese streets and places you will feel exactly like Michael "Nick" Douglas and Andy "Charlie" Garcia: talking to native Japanese people is almost impossible, either because they do not really speak any other language or because they pretend not to. The Japanese society is a close kind of environment and "gaijin" people are not welcome if they intend to be anything else than tourists.

Black Rain is a fantastic movie and you need to watch it many times so as to capture all the details it contains in the many aspects of its production.

MTS started out great. Some of the jokes had me literally LOL, which rarely happens with movies anymore. At other times, the jokes lingered far too long. The pit of death (american idol), top model, and deal or no deal sequences seem out of place (even for a parody) and last far too long. In fact, any of the modern-day inclusions only hurt the movie. The movie was strongest when the jokes were centered around 300. I cracked up when Leonidas was sparring with his son. I guess my biggest complaint was the ongoing gay joke. That might have worked 20 years ago. It's not a complaint from a tolerance perspective, it's just that we've seen it done before... too many times. I also didn't care for the wife (the actress or the character which was nothing like the one in 300).

!@ Easy Rider Blu ray

Two hippies, Wyatt and Billy, drive cross country on their motorcycles in order to blow a lot of money at Mardi gras. In the process they meet a slew of strange yet vital characters in their eventual understanding of their own existence.



The problem I have with `Easy Rider' is that it doesn't go anywhere for nearly half the film. I usually adore this freelance style of filmmaking, but `Easy Rider' does not sit well with me at all. In fact, the film is one gigantic fail for me until Jack Nicholson enters the story. His performance is outstanding, but I'll get to that in a minute. The film seems to just hang there, serving as a longwinded music video for some great classic rock tunes and some stunning (yet unrefined) cinematography. The `profound' statement that this film is trying to make gets lost along the way, only unveiling itself in small doses (like when Nicholson gets preachy in a sleeping bag).



`Easy Rider' is sort of boring.



Dennis Hooper's direction can be distracting at times (the way he splices his scenes together is creative yet unnecessary) and the tonal shift of his film towards the end is rather questionable. In fact, the whole Mardi gras sequence (that psychedelic cemetery trip scene) is staggeringly brilliant yet completely mind-numbing in that it is so out of place it becomes a deterrent to the film, not an aid. The eventual ending, while wholly prolific and steeped in profound insight, is more of a head-scratcher than anything else. I think that is my biggest complaint with the films second half (which is far better than the droned out first half). It is entirely inconsistent and winds up lacking any cohesive feeling.



But, there is always Jack Nicholson. His performance is one of the best supporting performances of all time. It is slick with wit, intelligence, bravado and profound sentiment. He ties together a lot of loose ends about the `meaning' here, without ever feeling out of place or forced. His charisma is in tact and his humor is just what this film needed. I won't demean him by using the phrase `comic relief', but I will say that he spices up a film in dire need of some `spice'.

In the end, I have to say that I am NOT impressed with this one. I was really excited about seeing this, but halfway through I was aching to turn it off. The only reason I watched it through to completion was the fact that I wanted to see what Nicholson did here, and I'm glad I witnessed that performance. So, if you are a fan of Jack then see this, for it is one of his best turns (he should have won the Oscar for this), but the film as a whole is not only outdated but uninspired, clumsy and boring.



This is the definition of a missed opportunity.

I just watched this one last night and it was an enjoyable ninety-plus minutes. LAKE HOUSE reunites Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, who were so much fun in Speed. Bullock plays a workaholic doctor living in 2006, while Reeves is an architect trying to decide what he wants to do with his life two years earlier. Through the intervention of a 'magic mailbox' the two begin to correspond, and eventually fall in love.



Throughout the course of the film Keanu slowly starts to interact with Sandra's earlier self, until he finally catches up with her in 2006. Fans of time paradox films like the BACK TO THE FUTURE series will likely enjoy this love story. Its not nearly as twisted up as the Christopher Reeve/Jane Seymour outing SOMEWHERE IN TIME, but has some similar elements. Was it perfect ? No... But it might make for a good date night film combining some sci-fi elements for the guys and an enjoyable romance for the ladies.



For the record, the end left me wondering if they had tested the film one way and ended up with a different ending. That said, Bullock and Reeves manage to pull off an intriguing and fun flick one more time.

!! Bored to Death Blu ray

This show is one of the best to come out of the last few years. If you like Wes Anderson, Kevin Smith, or any other weird, quirky humor than you will enjoy this show. Jason Schwartzman and Zach Galifiankis have really good chemistry, and the dialogue between them is really great.



The show is about a down-on-his-luck author, Jonathon Ames (Schwartzman) who gets dumped by his girlfriend, which inspires him to begin moonlighting as an unlicensed private detective. The stories are funny, but not completely outrageous, and the acting is really fun as well.



The best part of the show is Jason's boss, played by Ted Danson. His acting is incredible, and his jokes are VERY funny. His dialogue makes the show. Again, if you like quirky humor this show is really for you, and please give it a chance so it stays on TV. It's great!

My musician spent more time trying to adjust it than playing. She became frustrated with it and we ended up purchasing another instrument. A repairman said if the strings cost more that the viola, it's not worth it. A good set of strings costs more that this viola. It may be a good deal for a beginning student I would not my time or money on it. You get what you pay for!

I ordered this set back in November. I didn't open it until the beginning of March because I didn't have a Blu-ray player until then. I was excited to crack the box open and proudly display the replica of the Enterprise on my desk, but as soon as I pulled it out of the styrofoam packaging, one of the warp engine nacelles just fell off. My bad for not opening it sooner, but now Amazon does not have any of these left to replace it and I'm left with a ship without an engine. Poor quality control here folks!! The Blu-ray is awesome, however, so don't waste your money on this set, just buy the Blu-ray and wait until better models are available (which I hope is someday soon).

A History of Violence is a film about Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen)l a loving husband and father to a family with two children in a small town in Indiana. Corn fields surround his rural area home and he drives a pick-up truck. Tom also owns a small diner in town and has been in this town and married,living a quiet idyllic existence for about twenty years.



The movie slowly builds and develops complexity when Tom stops a vicious robbery in his diner. He protects his innocent employees and customers in amazing defensive and offensive reflexes beyond what normal men can do. Tom reminded me of a Clark Kent that can turn into his alter-ego Superman when needed. (His son also shows Tom's quick reflexes and thinking when he is unfairly attacked by high school bullies. By standing up to the bully and his friends he gains respect and the right to be left alone.)



Unfortunately for Tom, he is featured as a hero on several news stations as well as the newspaper. His life and face are in the spotlight, which immediately signals a threatening mobster from out of town (Ed Harris). He arrives into town with two thugs with a story that Tom attacked him and ruined his face and eye with barbed wire. Tom's past is unpeeled layer by layer as he struggles to protect his family from his violent past.



After the two confrontations and killing out of town mobsters, Tom is ruinited with his "good guy" brother, Ritchie (William Hurt). Ritchie is mixed up with the mob and wants vengence with Tom for leaving him "holding the bag" from the past. The acting does not skip a beat - the casting is excellent and the movie is mesmerizing. This is a top-notch psychological thriller, putting light on beliefs, relationships and the audacity of using violence to protect and save relationships.

I am not a fan of movies in which the main character spends the whole film with a flat affect on his face, such as the one Will Ferrell wears here throughout. It gets a little dull. I grew antsy almost from the beginning here, when the storyline becomes apparent. Though seemingly original, I wasn't particularly entertained by it. Dustin Hoffman is again wasted, as he was in "I Love Huckabees." This is a supposed comedy, but there are no real laughs, perhaps just a smirk now and then. It's also a bit long. I had to pause it several times to get through it because it's just not that compelling.

• The pickup system consists of individual sensors for each string, mounted in a specially designed bridge. Each sensor is housed inside a pendulum upon which the string rests at the bridge. String vibration causes the pendulum to vibrate ever so slightly within the bridge, which creates an extremely large signal, so large in fact that it needs no preamp to boost output level. You can plug directly into a guitar amplifier and get powerful, aggressive and massive electric tone straight away.
• It's fitted with a small onboard mixer, which supplies level controls for the individual sensors and a master level control. The purpose of the mixer is to tailor sound output of the strings to fit individual playing styles, sound requirements, etc. An Output Mode switch provides the player with the option of using the mixer or bypassing it altogether, in which case battery power is not necessary since the massive sound output created by the pickups needs no preamp boost to make it usable.
• The violin's beautiful "Cosmic Blue" body is a one-piece design crafted from a block of solid maple. • Headphone jack: The Silent Practice technology that Yamaha founded can also be used as an on-stage, in-ear monitor. Electric guitar technology: The system is grounded (by grounding custom designed strings to a custom tailpiece) to eliminate interference. Gear-type tuning heads: Machined heads provide quick and precise tuning.
• Everything comes together to give the EV-204 a wide dynamic range. Tone is fat, edgy, aggressive and powerful but you can go from pianissimo to fortissimo with clarity and ease. Response is quick and the sound is clear. Output is noise-free you need not worry about feedback. The body is comfortable and light with the heel and upper rib where they should be. The design allows attachment of most conventional shoulder and chin rests so you can use whatever you're accustomed to.

This film didn't work for me. It was heavily muddled and just plain disapponting. Wesley Snipes' part is pretty much a cameo and Jason Statham is not used to good measure. Statham has a lot of dialog and seemed to be pushing his acting ability to the limit. All in all I don't recommend this film either to action fans or Statham fans.

Love Happens.....We have seen this concept over and over in films (chick flicks mainly). I do indulge in the occasional chick flick but this one was just plain awful. Does Jennifer Aniston ever play a different character? The chemistry between her and Aaron Eckhart is painful to watch. The two do not connect at all and is dreadful and dull to watch. The parrot in this film is more entertaining to watch. It's just awful and don't waste your time.

I purchased one of these violins three years ago and have been playing it daily since. It easily stands up to more expensive violins in quality, appearance and sound. Is it a world-class instrument? Of course not. But, I have looked into upgrading based on my improved abilities and in comparing it to much more expensive instruments I cannot justify the minor improvements vs the cost. I keep coming back to this violin. And, as with any violin the sound improves over time. You know when you are right on pitch, because this thing just resonates beautifully. The case, as previously noted is a very high-end design. Better violins do generally come with only one tuner on the high string -- this is not a defect. Tuning has never been a problem. I did eventually have to replace the bow, as it began to warp slightly after three years. I was ready for a better bow anyway. I highly recommend the Model 8, especially as a beginning instrument because it will serve you well for many years and not leave you disappointed or yearning for a better one until you are well advanced and ready for it.

In November 2007, FUNimation Entertainment had their first release using Hi-Definition Blu-ray technology with the release of their two of the most succesful "DRAGON BALL Z" films "Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan" (the eighth "DRAGON BALL Z" film released on March 1993) and "Broly - The Second Coming" (the tenth "DRAGON BALL Z" film released on March 1994).



As a "DRAGON BALL Z" fan, the Broly films have always been my favorites, especially "Broly - The Second Coming" which I first saw (in Japanese) at an anime club meeting back in 1994.



But whenever there is a film with Broly, you can expect a lot of action and intense battles. And personally, the "DRAGON BALL Z" films that involve "Broly" plot-wise are the best!



VIDEO AND AUDIO:



"DRAGON BALL Z" is featured in High Definition Widescreen at 1920 x 1080P. According to a flyer inside the case, there is information about the transfer and how the original Japanese film masters were transferred via an industry-standard Spirit DataCine, passing through a Digital Vision DVNR10000 to remove film grain and another round of processing using a Teranex VCooo video computer. These digital noise-reduction units helped to remove thousands of instances of dirt, scratches and debris.



The cleaned footage signal went through a da Vinci 2K Plus color system to ensure that the colors were true to the original film prints. The final media for transfer was Sony's HDCAM, a high-definition digital tape.



With that being said, let me first say that a lot of older Japanese animated films have not been taken care of. In fact, many anime films have had warping and major issues that restoration even to DVD has not been all that great. Unless, there was an expensive facility developed for it (such as the recent "AKIRA" release which was an expensive remastering process), there's only so much that can be done to make an older Japanese film look great.



With that being said, there is a big difference between the video quality of "Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan" which has looked like the previous "DRAGON BALL Z" films that were released on Blu-ray and "Broly - The Second Coming". With "Broly - The Second Coming", one thing you'll notice is a slight art difference with the background art and also the colors are much more vibrant and colorful.



One can say that the later the film is, the better the colors and I suppose that you can say in this case, the tenth film is much, much cleaner and colorful than the eighth.



But with that being said, "Broly - the Legendary Super Saiyan" does look good for an anime film that is 16-years-old and "Broly - Second Coming" which is 15-years-old which colors and animation is so far the best in video quality compared to the other "DRAGON BALL Z" films and specials preceding it.



Now one of the things that has been an issue with older "DRAGON BALL Z" films is the scratches and dust. Despite the DNR units that helped to remove thousands of instances of difrt, scratches and debris, again... with a lot of the original Japanese film sources not really being taken care of, there is only so much that can be done. And in this case, there are visible scratches, dust and even some warping at times but nowhere as numerous as the first two "DRAGON BALL Z" films.



As for audio, audio is presented in English 5.1 Dolby Surround

Sound (HD-DTS), English Stereo and Original Japanese. Unlike the newer "DRAGON BALL Z" Blu-ray releases, there is typically an English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio track with the English with newer music and another with the Japanese music track. Because this is a 2007 Blu-ray release, the track I tend to listen to is the English track with the original Japanese music.



JUDGMENT CALL:



Having watched these film in original Japanese before, I watched it again in Japanese but when watching on Blu-ray, you want that awesome sound, so watching these two films with the Pantera and rock n' roll guitar and percussion driven music was definitely a first for me.



I have to admit that hearing the heavy metal like guitar churning and heavy hitting music, definitely added an enjoyable side to watching these two films and really gave the film some extra energy during the battle scenes.



And when it comes to the English dubbing, FUNimation Entertainment has one of the best well-casted series with "DRAGON BALL Z" films. In fact, it's actually difficult for me to watch the original Japanese (that I grew up watching for years) because of the significant vocals with the English dub track. So, the English dub track was well-acted and again, enjoyable!



SPECIAL FEATURES:



The "DRAGON BALL Z" films really don't come with anything for special features but surprising enough, there were two featurettes. One that featured the transfer and bringing "DRAGON BALL Z" to Blu-ray. From making the films as 16×9 and other technical but informative facts about the transfer. The other is mainly a promotional for the upcoming "DRAGON BALL Z" television series to DVD.



With many "DRAGON BALL Z" films being short and sweet, one of the exciting things about Broly is that he has made his appearance in three films (which includes the eleventh film "Bio-Broly"). It's important to note that at this time of my review, FUNimation Entertainment has planned on a triple feature "Broly" release in Spring 2009. So, suffice to say, this double-Broly release may be out of print.



Suffice to say, the Broly films are my favorite "DRAGON BALL Z" films. There is a good plot, intense action and overall, compared to the other films, the Broly films are just enjoyable!



"Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan" is the longest running "DRAGON BALL Z" film at 71 minutes. The second film "Broly - The Second Coming" is about 60 minutes long.



I can't tell you how much I enjoyed watching these two films again, especially my personal favorite "Broly - The Second Coming" on Blu-ray. The colors were just vibrant and after watching many of the films out on Blu-ray thus far, to see the clarity of the tenth film was just amazing.



Granted, the transfer is not perfect and there are signs of scratches, dust and a little film warping on very few frames but I was very impressed with the transfer to Blu-ray for both films considering how old the films are.



As mentioned, the "Broly" trilogy will be released on Blu-ray in Spring of 2009 and this "Broly" double feature may be out of print and no longer be available. This Blu-ray disc was the first release for FUNimation Entertainment back in 2007 but nevertheless, if you are able to find this release for a low price or have no interest in the eleventh film "Bio-Broly", then definitely pick this title up.



Overall, the "DRAGON BALL Z" Broly films are just fun to watch. I have to admit that I enjoyed listening to FUNimation's heavy metal, guitar and percussion driven music soundtrack during the battles, considering I'm more into the original Japanese dialogue and music. Being a hardcore "DRAGON BALL Z" fan, I was a bit skeptical at first of heavy rock bands being used for the musical soundtrack of the English dub but it definitely added a charged up, energetic feel to those action-packed moments. And there are many action-packed scenes on both features.



Overall, another solid "DRAGON BALL Z" release and these two films look good on Blu-ray. "DRAGON BALL Z" fans, this double-feature is definitely worth checking out!
