!$ Poison Ivy 4 The Secret Society Blu ray

The fourth installment in the poison ivy series, although it has little in common with the previous aside from name.

The main protagonist is Danielle "Daisy" Brooks played by Miriam Mcdonald, better known as Emma Nelson on Degrassi: the Next Generation. While the main antagonist is Azalea Berges best known as Icebook from the movie Little Giants. Yes they've both matured nicely.

There is only two essential male characters, Professor Andrew Graves and his son Blake Graves.

The basis plot is about how simple farm girl Daisy who is a straight A student gets a scholarship to a prodigious academy leaving behind her simple farm life and simple farm boyfriend.

Meanwhile Azela who is a high ranking member of the exclusive Ivys, essentially an all female mafia, is trying to get an internship with the academy. She is willing to do anything to get it even going as far as sleeping with Blake just to find out if there is any competition.

When she finds out Daisy got it she has her initiated into the society in order to take control of her. It's not long before Daisy realizes that she's a pawn in a much bigger game. I don't won't to spoil it, but the ending leaves much to be desired.

The character of Daisy is not well fleshed out. Very little is known about her and the death of her parents. Also at the beginning she has a boyfriend and yet she has no problem sleeping with Blake and on the first date. Even worse she's back with her boyfriend at the end.

Azela character is not well made out either, I mean sleeping with a guy just to get information.

Neither of the main characters plays much of a part, Blake is merely a plot device after his night with Daisy, and the professor plays an even less significant role.

There was also plenty of lose ends, what happened to the society, what about Daisy and Blake, what about Azela and Elizbeth, ordinarily this would mean sequel but most likely if there is another movie it will be with completely different characters and none of this will be acknowledged.

And if you didn't already know the DVD has five minutes of extra, explicit footage. Both Miriam and Shawna go completely topless in this:

The explicit scenes are as follows:

      Shawna:

While making out with Blake she has her top removed to reveal her breasts, followed by a scene of having her breasts sucked and dry humping.

In order to seduce her professor Azela shows up in black lingerie before pulling her top down to reveal her breasts, followed by a scene similar to the first.

      Miriam:

While making out with a guy she removes her dress and bra to reveal a full frontal shot of her breasts, followed by a few side shots of her breasts.

At the initiation ceremony, she along with two other girls has their robes removed to reveal a brief shot of her breasts, they are all then lie down and given a tattoo, and their breasts can all be seen again when they rise.

In addition she has two lesser explicit scenes, in one she is seen in her underwear and in the other she is seen wearing black lingerie.

Miriam seemed far less enthusiastic about being topless than Shawna. Both times Miriam is topless it is only brief, while Shawna's scenes last for over a minute, Shawna really seemed to be getting into it as well, guarantee this won't be her last time doing nudity

I personally believe that the nudity is merely a ruse to sell DVDs, really five minutes of nudity is no reason to buy a DVD. However if you are a fan of Miriam or Shawna or erotic thrillers in general, then you can give it a try.

-- Amadeus Director s Cut Blu ray

Between film and theatre, there lie many discrepancies in focus that set the two art forms vastly apart. In theatre, everything is exaggerated and enhanced for theatrical effect. There is much imagination and symbolism, while realism is largely diminished for theatrical and dramatic purposes, but also for budgetary reasons. In adapting a theatre piece into a film, these differences must be considered with great care, so as not to simply set in motion the filming of a play. The realism that theatre lacks must be sufficiently developed and captured on camera in a way that sets apart the two interpretations. With Amadeus, Milos Forman skillfully manages to balance and differentiate what elements make a film, and what elements make a play.

The realism that Forman manages to draw out of Peter Shaffer's play and screenplay adaptation can easily be attributed to the director's thirst for authenticity, which can be seen oozing from the pores of his 1975 film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. During production on Cuckoo's Nest, he had his actors staying at Oregon State hospital, where they had intimate experience with genuine mental patients, and where the film's interior scenes were shot. This "on-location" style of filmmaking served Forman well then, drawing out terrifyingly real performances from the cast, most of whom were unknown at the time, again adding to the reality and pretense of the film. These are the same kinds of techniques that Forman uses once again in Amadeus, made in 1984, roughly nine years after Cuckoo's Nest. The movie was shot entirely on-location in Prague, Czechoslovakia, which was under communist rule at the time. Foreman is also from Czechoslovakia, and his familiarity with the country allowed him to envision the city of Prague as being the perfect filming location for the setting of the script: Vienna. Because the country was under communist rule, the city of Prague was essentially decades behind in appearances and technology, which added to the authenticity of being able to film anywhere without danger of capturing anything too modern.

Watching the film, it indeed seems as if Forman and his cast and crew time-traveled to 18th Century Vienna, and began filming. An opening sequence set in a mental hospital was filmed in a neglected military museum, and the debut of Mozart's Don Giovanni was shot on location in the theatre where the opera actually premiered more than a century prior. In addition to the on-location filming, Foreman once again chose to cast largely unknown actors in the lead roles. F. Murray Abraham, who won the Oscar for playing Salieri, had been in the business for a time, but had never received much recognition. Tom Hulce had done some work, but Mozart was and still is his most notable performance to date. The performances, and the Prague location ground the film in a deep and magnificent realm of reality and drama that Forman captures in a way that only he could have done. He develops an atmosphere of pretense that his characters manage to mimic and parallel in their actions. Salieri pretends to be Mozart's companion, while secretly he consistently plots to sabotage his career in a fit of jealous madness. There is pretense shaded into the film just as it is shaded into the actual production, which emulates Forman's style and technique.

It is also worth noting that in Amadeus, the music of Mozart is the third main character. It does not suggest or dictate what we, the audience, should be feeling. It stands alone as an independent force of emotion, just as Jack Nitzsche's theme in Cuckoo's Nest does, and so it is no surprise that one of the film's eight Oscar's was for best sound.

#@: Elizabeth The Golden Age Blu ray

This movie may not be everyone's cup of tea, as it's dense on politics at times, and gruesome at others. However, for those reviewers who claim this film demonstrates religious bigotry, I beg to differ. Written and visual portraits from this time period reveal that the Spanish did indeed behave and dress the way they appeared in the film. Dour, black-wearing, bearded, somber, and convinced that Elizabeth was an Infidel who deserved to be destroyed. In addition, Philip II's infirmities and strange physique were portrayed as they truly were at the time; the House of Hapsburg and its various branches was becoming so inbred in early modern Europe that many of its members were physically deformed. This is no different than discussing how that the House of Tudor, for whatever physical/genetic reasons, clearly had reduced fertility during Henry VIII's time and afterward -- and saying so is hardly anti-Protestant prejudice. These are historical facts, and histories of the time period make them abundantly clear.

The movie does not try to absolve Elizabeth from all religious prejudice; indeed, it does show her ministers' gruesome vengeance -- with confessions extracted from torture -- against Catholics suspected of plotting her demise. However, it is important to keep in mind that context of the times, and that the religious wars were brutal across Europe. Compared to the Spanish Inquisition, Elizabethan England was far less violent.

Her reign was also less violent than her father Henry VIII's by far -- he whose rule saw widespread oppression and terrorism against Catholics and Protestants alike, depending on how the religious/political winds were blowing across Europe at any given moment, and given the views and actions of Henry's enemies/allies/wives/lovers of any given moment.

Frankly, I find it hard to believe that even the most devout of Catholics of today would still claim that it would have been better for autocratic Spain, which had practically NO democratic tradition, and in which the Inquisition against Protestants, Jews, Muslims, accused heretics, etc. etc. was in full swing, to have conquered England in 1588.... The movie is also very useful in demonstrating how Elizabeth's victories and her enduring rule were in large part a result of her turning herself into a quasi-religious icon for her realm -- something the first film in the series makes even more clear -- and the price she had to pay for that decision. Subtle people will detect the subtleties in the film, and appreciate them. People with a major religious axe to grind, however, probably will not.

!$ The Amityville Horror Blu ray

From the first shot in the movie, THE AMITYVILLE HORROR sets the pace with a perpetual sense of unease and subtle psychological terror that continues until the final shot. There is no point throughout the entire film where the audience is safe. Rather than forcing heavy make-up or special FX on the audience, it is the atmosphere built through the slow destruction of the characters' sanity paired with creepy events that garners genuine scares. There is no point at which the film clearly states that the events are actually occurring, and many of the clues leave the audience guessing as to whether the characters have passed their mental breaking point or whether the gate of hell has truly been opened beneath their new home. James Brolin offers one of the most frightening performances in the entire genre, truly becoming the character of George Lutz and walking the audience through his paranoid delusions, fear, and obsession. His crazed expressions and downward spiral into madness are more terrifying than any of the supernatural elements of the plot. AMITY also offers some of the most memorable horror scenes as well, most notably the scenes of the walls dripping blood and the priest that is forced out of the house by the disembodied voice screaming "GET OUT!!" While there are clearly elements that have been lifted from several other successful films from the 70s in this haunted tale, it is by all means and standards a classic in the genre, and becomes more and more interesting with repeated viewings. A family falls prey to a series of supernatural events after moving into a New England home with a sinister past...

#$ The Great Buck Howard Blu ray

THE GREAT BUCK HOWARD is a charming, breezy, fairly family-friendly movie with a nice cast and an almost old-fashioned vibe. It's far from a great movie, and yet it has a quirky originality that makes it worth a look.

Buck Howard (John Malkovich) is a mentalist. In fact, his act is based on The Amazing Kreskin, the hypnotist/mentalist/magician who frequently appeared on Johnny Carson and other talk shows like that. Buck is a fading star however, playing to half-empty theaters in mid-sized cities all around the country. His audience is mostly senior citizens who clearly remember this guy from his days of appearing on THE DINAH SHORE SHOW. His act is sort of dreadful...yet it's sort of amazing too. Colin Hanks plays Troy, a law-school dropout who wants to be a writer, but stumbles into the job of being Buck's road manager.

The film follows Buck on tour, as he works to achieve a comeback of sorts. He doesn't quite seem to get that the likelihood of that is very dim. He isn't deluded enough to think his career is in great shape (he gets that he's become, at best, a third-rate celebrity), but he DOES think that he just needs that one piece of great publicity to rocket himself back into stardom.

The movie takes a bumpy but fairly unsurprising road. It's mostly the charming performers who make it worth watching (and the excellent art & costume direction). Hanks is looking more like his father Tom all the time, and while he doesn't have the gravitas his dad has, he's a nice performer who one day is probably cut out to star in a TV series. (He was excellent during his guest stint on MAD MEN). His Troy is something of a blank...if we didn't get the occasional voice-over narration, we would really struggle to know what kinds of inner turmoil Troy is going through...the script doesn't reveal much about him through the events of the film; he's mostly an observer. Emily Blunt, always welcome, is the publicist who tries to get Buck some national exposure, and also embarks on a predictable but fairly chaste (at least, on screen) romance with Troy. Steve Zahn, again an always welcome presence, shows up briefly as a sort-of limo driver. Griffin Dunne makes a cameo appearance. Tom Hanks even shows up in two scenes as Troy's father (what a stretch!!). He's a producer on the film, so no doubt his influence helped land the film it's plethora of guest stars, including Conan O'Brien, Regis, Kelly, Leno, Tom Arnold, etc. (Arnold has about two lines, both throwaways, and both really funny if you're listening).

The core of the film is Malkovich. I still remember when he was an amazing, credible actor who could play weird characters and make them believable. He has long ago sunk into just being weird most of the time. But his Buck Howard is almost a return to his glory days. The script is too slight to REALLY give us an idea of what is going on inside Buck...but Malkovich launches into the PERSONA of this man with relish and a real sense of fun. It isn't exactly a believable character...but we're mostly only seeing the Buck Howard that his shrinking public sees. Wacky but charming. Enthusiastic but prone to fits of petty anger. Able to charm men & women alike (we never even know what sexual orientation Buck is...even though there's speculation in the film). We have to guess a lot at any inner turmoil he might be feeling (much like with the character of Troy).

There's a truly probing story in here somewhere, but the writer/director apparently wasn't interested in anything too emotional or insightful. It's a fluffy piece, where any bad feelings are quickly overcome. It doesn't take its subject matter lightly, exactly...but it does feel like a conscious decision to make this story breezy. For what it attempts, THE GREAT BUCK HOWARD gets a big smile and a mild recommendation from me.

I said the movie was family friendly. There was virtually no bad language I can remember (it's only PG rated), and the relationship between Blunt and Hanks is mostly hugging and kissing. (We get that they must sleep together, but other than them sitting on a bed necking while fully clothed, that's all we see.) A child of 12 or older with a willingness to see a film outside the ordinary might like this film...or they might find it merely a puzzling curiosity. And not knowing how big THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JOHNNY CARSON once was might detract.

When I heard about the premise of this film, I thought it sounded interesting and ambitious: the same exciting moment in time as seen from several different points of view. The American president gets assasinated while preparing to give a speech in a public square in Spain. The same half hour or so is seen through the eyes of a news producer (Sigourney Weaver) and her reporter, a Secret Service Agent (Dennis Quaid), an onlooker (Forrest Whitaker) in the crowd assembled to watch the speech, and several of the people involved in plotting to kill the president. Because of all the intense action and different points of view, we rarely see exactly the same thing, so the film isn't boring at all. But there are several aspects of the movie that are very far-fetched. (I can't say what without putting spoilers into the review, so please take my word on this)! However the thing that really bothered me about this is that we spend half the movie watching the bad guys, and we never really understand any of their motivation for their actions. For instance, after shooting the president, there are two explosions near his podium that really only harm the onlookers. Even at the end of the movie, there's only one line that even attempts to explain the wherefores of all that we've just watched, so for me the film is really unsatisfying. Its saving graces are the well done action sequences and the performances of Dennis Quaid and Forrest Whitaker, as well as one of the good guys who's been roped into being one of the assassins by the kidnapping of a family member - again, far fetched.

If you like action movies with very little heart, or you're a big fan of Dennis Quaid or Forrest Whitaker, buy the movie. Otherwise, I can't really recommend it. The aforementioned fine performances are the only thing that brought this above a two star review from me.

                                  #@: Seabiscuit Blu ray

This film is one of the best to come out of the entertainment industry in decades. It tells a story of a small horse who brings excitement, pride and determination to a nation put on its knees by a great depression. This film will wrench your heart with the tragedies of life, but also warm you with laughter and knowledge that even in the toughest of times, we always find a way to survive and prosper. It is a great story for younger people because the message contained in the story is told without reverting to the titilating themes of excess violence, sex and nudity, murder and mayhem. Amazing that life can be fully lived and experienced and a story can be told without having to succumb to the taudry.

This film is very entertaining. Has that high-school atmosphere even though many of the actors look in their twenties. For a low-budget film it really depicts the nuclear aspect surprisingly well. The goober-like crowd against the nuclear-infected crowd is the good vs. evil in this film and it has its goofy moments and creative moments. Some real baberaham Lincolns' as well. In the end I thought the writing and team-effort acting was what propelled this movie to success.

                                      ++ Hellraiser Blu ray

This movie should be called the best of Clive Barker. This is my favorite movie he has ever done. The thing I like about Barker is he has such a twisted mind "thats a good thing" He can think up the wildest things you can think of.

Made in 87' Its a story about a family that moves into a house. But there is a corpse of a man "Frank" that is upstairs and the only way he can stay alive is he needs the blood of hopeless victums. Frank betrayed these Cenobites and they are trying to find him. There is a puzzle box that is the gateway to hell and thats where the cenobites come from.

There are lots of sequels to this movie. But I think this one and the second are the best. Pick it up at amazon.

More than twenty years later, Barker s original vision of pleasure, pain and the nightmare icon forever known as Pinhead have returned like you ve never seen them before. Andrew Robinso
