Well,maybe I'm just a softy for bad movies...or Kristen Miller movies,but,I liked The Fallen Ones.The story is very good(to say nothing of original,which is something that's lacking in hollywood now'a days!).I was pleasantly surprised to see that the characters were not some christian nuts going on some kind'a witch hunt!They actually made them out to be everyday kind'a people(refreshing!).By the way,even thought the movie points out the team had found a forty-two foot mummy,in reality,archaeologist have only found a skeleton of some thirty-five feet tall(so far).I have been wondering about the giants from the Bible.The nephilim or the fallen ones,were the off spring of fallen angels and earthly women,(or daughters of man as it is stated in the Bible).These renown men of old are the same spoken of in Greek,Norse,Native American and pre-Columbian South American mythology.Yes,the acting is less the oscar material,but I KNEW what to except Before I sat down to watch this movie!It kills me to read the same reviews from people who continue to watch these movies from the sci-fi channel when they have seen the other three hundred BEFORE!Can we just give these guys credit for trying and move on with it!Kevin Van Hook did a pretty good job with the schedule and budget that he had.YES,I liked the movie and storyline so much that I bought the dvd!Robert Wagoner,Kristen (kitten)Miller,Casper Van Dien and of course Tom Bosley did a good job with the storyline and acting.One of the best parts of the movie is the nephilim chasing the jeep with our heroes trying to save the girl,CLASSIC!The special effects were really good considering the time table and budget. The company that put the dvd out really did a great job in the layout and extras(making of, photos,etc.).I can't speak for anyone else,but I really hope they come out with a sequel.They could do one in South America or go to Israel and do something there Maybe even India in the Himalayian mountains.Hopefully they will have Casper and Kristen back if they decide to make another movie.

I believed that Sarah Michelle Prinze's character was safe with Alec Baldwin's character and obviously, the dissonance of the pairing was intentional. It was nice and wistful and appropriately sad not necessarily because of the alleged romance but because of this specific time in young woman's life when there's just that bit of girl there. This movie was sad in a truthful way that Confessions of a Shopaholic was not. This movie should be expanded (keep Buffy and let her be a Jewish raised in the suburbs living in Manhattan.) This could be really successful and just full of good ideas already. It could write itself and would be popular with everyone but mainly teenage girls college bound, college girls and newly graduated because everyone dreams of getting that first job, apartment in Manhattan and Buffy wears clothes well. It would be very hard to screw up an expansion of this film into a series.

I am suprised that this movie is only PG, and not PG-13 at least. I was shocked as I watched through it with my two teen kids - the language and "let's make a baby" theme of this movie are a little overboard. Words like ba***rd, son of a b****, etc kept me cringing and wondering if I should just turn the whole thing off - certainly not a movie I want my kids to watch over and over, and definately not a family movie. There definately was not enough about Marley, and too much about the couples sex life to make for a good family movie - the couple even jumps into their pool naked after a birthday party so the husband can have his other "birthday present" ......this is not suggestive folks - it leaves very little to the imagination, and even almost completely tells openly what the couple are doing - too many sex scenes - way too many - and the husbands sex-starved girlfriend hopping co-worker is at the core of some of the sex scene problems too - too much skin showing in this movie for a family/pet movie - if they had cleaned that up, this movie would have been 5 stars - a good story, but they ruined it by not keeping it family friendly. Rent this and preview it first before you sit down in front of it with the kids. If I had known about the language and sexual content of this movie, I never would have purchased it.

The actors are great, manage to stay in character and on topic, the photography and sound are acceptable, and it's worth the time and effort to buy it, watch it, think about it, and watch it again.



Then it's time to pass it on, but only to thinking adults, not to idiots who are only interested in "getting off their rocks."

It seems that every hot actress needs to star in at least one comic-book or sci-fi action flick to show of her athleticism, long legs, perfect tone and great figure. Angelina Jolie had Tomb Raider, Halle Berry had Catwoman, Pamela Andersen had Barb Wire, and now Charlize Theron has Aeon Flux. Fortunately, this one is actually very good. Set in the distant future on an Earth decimated by a plague, Ms. Theron plays the title character, an assassin of incredible skill, beauty and ruthlessness. The movie is about her latest mission, and how her discoveries on this mission change her and mankind. This movie is based of a comic-book, which I have not read, so I have no comment on how faithful this film is to the original story. However, I can say the movie is quite good, with great special effects, a plot that was original compared to other action flicks, and Ms. Theron was aptly displayed. Overall, a very entertaining movie.

This movie is very much like "Jin-Roh", which was probably the best movie done my Mamoru Oshii. Meaning, some, SOME great action, but it's mostly a quiet and wonderful character piece. Definitely worth your time, but go in with your expectations appropriately locked down.



The only problem with the movie is that Oshii plays some of the clues WAY too obviously. It reminded me of Grant Morrison's "Mystery Play", where he felt so burned by his previous, breakthrough graphic novel "Arkham Asylum" because the fanboys were upset that the book was too obtuse and required them to puzzle out the story, that he made the second story much more obvious. "Look, my hand is bleeding." (Translation, pay attention, this, THIS is a important.) Oshii does some of the same things, and that's what slows the movie down a little for me. But, to each their own.



Lastly, some (insane) reviewers have read WAY too much of their own psychosis into the story, and have claimed the story is a FU by Oshii to anime fanboys. After seeing the movie, you can decide for yourself, and I'll admit, this analysis does have SOME merit. However, the bigger picture is that everyone's life is about breaking out of routine and trying to make your own path, finding your own identity. In short, those (insane) reviewers need to relax.

This film has some significant factors in its favor; strong performances from Angelica Lee and her wonderful young co-star, emotionally charged set pieces, and some truly creepy moments. It's unfortunate and frustrating that it has significant elements which work against it success. The green screen work is excessive and often the actors are inaccurately lit in the foreground, ruining the illusion. Some sequences go on far too long and lose their potential impact. For every original idea and image, there seem to be two incredibly derivative ones. For example, the poor-man's-Romero-zombies used to portray many of the abandoned spirits. And, do we REALLY need yet another film with malevolent, long-haired female spirits lurking about in the background? Do we need more running-water-as-threat sequences? These tired retreads cripple the more original visuals. Another problem, common to many Asian genre scripts, is superfluous explanatory dialogue. The exact nature of the most disturbing sequences in the film is made quite clear with preceding explanations and very clear visuals. Yet, the whole thing gets explained by a character after the fact. (one could argue that this is because the sequence has a direct link to that character's nature) Finally, the music is incredibly generic. keyboard attempts at orchestral strings feel cheap when accompanying the lush visuals. However, I still recommend the film. There are incredibly touching character-driven moments throughout, and some truly effective tension-release sequences.

The emphasis in the title is "Island." This does not cover all of Asia. It focuses on Java and the islands near it. This work begins and then ends with the top of the food chain: leopards on some islands and lizards on others. I had always heard that animals become smaller the longer their species survive on islands; this documentary says that's true for some, but for others they do become larger.

The work shows diverse life: mammals, insects, reptiles, birds, and trees. It even includes a marsupial! The work shows one primate that is large and diurnal and then its relative that is small and nocturnal. The documentary is realistic by showing nocturnal animals moving around at night, but as a human with my limited vision, it was difficult to see those creatures. I wish they could have shown a drawing of them so that I could tell what they looked like. The work discusses a parasitic tree that strangles the tree it surrounds.

Figs seem to be what keeps all these island dwellers alive. (Personally, I don't like the figs that I've eaten, so it was different to see them as a food essential.) In the way that some fish have mouth closer to the ground, some parallel to their eyes, and some closer to the water surface, this work says some figs grow near leaves like typical fruit, some lie on the tree (I would say like acne), and some have figs that grow near the ground. Each fig had a different animal that spreads its seeds.

The work shows an island that just arose 70 years ago and then it shows the procession of animals that arrive there. It was almost like watching a genesis. The work said there are only 70 Javan rhinos left. I had heard that a species must have at least 150 members to survive, but this documentary never says whether that rhino is already doomed.

One critique I have is that the English captions show "it's" when the narrator means "its." Fire the staff member responsible for those typos!

We watched the director's cut so I can't speak to the theatrical version or whether it was different. But on the directors cut we say Yay! We enjoyed this movie far more than expected by the ho-hum "honeymooners" trailer. Timothy Olyphant was excellent and we were cheering for him and his girlfriend by the end. This movie had subtlety and action and you really will enjoy the second half more than the first. The first half of the film was a lot of storyline building and character development and some things just don't make sense in hindsight, but it was a really good weekend flick!

This is one of the best "environment" DVDs I've seen. It's as if you are on vacation and take a walk in a lush rainforest. As you walk down paths where there are no other people, stresses, or distractions. You get to see nature at its best. There is a soft, comforting sound of doves and other birds. The tropical foliage ripples in the wind, with the colors of green, gold, and a little bit of red, giving an almost surreal appearance. There are varying sizes of waterfalls, ponds, and streams, all surrounded with ferns and moss. The water is so clear you can see the pebbles on the bottom. You hear the soft rain falling on the pond, as the camera ever so slowly turns your gaze to focus on one exquisite view after another. You aren't in a hurry. You take all the time you want, and you go back whenever you wish.



I've visited a rain forest and would love to go back. For now though, this video is just right for my purposes. I have it on as I'm typing this review. Earlier I used it as background while I was reading, listening to the sounds of the water, glancing up from time to time to enjoy the view. The 'nature sounds only' option is very unobtrusive, with bird sounds so real I keep thinking they are outside my window. My dog even thought so and I have lots of nature videos that he never reacts to at all. There may be wildlife in there and I'll continue to look for some as I use the video to relax after a particularly stressful day. Just now I caught myself breathing more deeply, something I normally don't have "time" to do.



The best use I am getting from this video is blocking out the stresses of my regular routine and getting rid of unnecessary tension, something this video achieves in just a few short minutes. As a bonus, I'm also getting some great landscaping ideas for the water feature (small waterfall and large pond) in my back yard. That was a plus I hadn't expected.



Even though I tend to turn off the music by choosing the nature sounds only option, which is now available. I have used the music option as well, and it was very appropriate and a good option for times when you want music. I'm glad that choice is available.

** Boogie Nights Blu ray

BOOGIE NIGHTS is a great movie by all accounts -- great directing, acting, story, screenplay, photography, music...etc. PTA is probably the best director out there as of now. BOOGIE NIGHTS is an American Dramatic Epic about the 70's Porn scene in Southern CA. I own the DVD of the film but the BLU RAY experience was even better. The DOLBY TRUE HD audio pops with power and detail and makes me appreciate the sound mix even more; I should say that there is a little hiss and crackle in third act of the film in the audio track which I kinda liked but it may bother some people. Perhaps the original mix was created as an analog master (rare but doable) and hence retains superior fidelity but a few analog crackles in the DOLBY TRUE HD BLU RAY mix.



The BLU RAY picture quality is a dramatic jump above the DVD and Itunes HD which looks soft, compressed, and washed out in comparison. It looks like the BLU RAY used a TELECINE transfer from the 35MM which makes sense because PTA color corrected this film the classic analog chemical way instead of doing a Digital Intermediate. Color and resolution is full and they even preserved the stylish film grain which many BLU RAYS try and remove. I love that the grain was maintained in the image as it actually adds to the perceived texture of the picture and is closer to what the director PTA intended.



Director's commentary on this BLU RAY is one of the best out there and I wish PTA would do the same with THERE WILL BE BLOOD and MAGNOLIA.



BOOGIE NIGHTS BLU RAY -- a must have for any cinema lover.

When entertaining guests, I use this blu ray to display my 5.1 theatre system. Simply put, this is the best concert blu ray we own. If you are a fan of The Police, it is even that much better as I am only a casual fan. The video is breathtaking and the audio is every bit as magical. The crowd is lively and the performance is masterful. My favorite track from this blu ray is "Wrapped Around Your Finger" as the focus on the drum solo is better experienced than informed. Enjoy.

I cannot imagine a better Nutcracker than this. It is a delight from beginning to end. Wonderful sets, costumes, and superb dancing. The picture and sound quality are just wonderful. Do not hesitate. I personally prefer this to the recent San Francisco Blu ray but that is also pretty good but not as traditional as this production. I rate this as one of the best ballet discs in my collection.

While some of the retro "Universal" FX are magnificent, and Gary Oldman has his moments as a psychotic Romanian, "Bram Stoker's Dracula" is a dreadful film on nearly every level. Style -- and not very good style -- over substance at every turn.



Things start out with a preposterous pre-title sequence, where we are treated to an utterly grand guignol take on Balkan history -- the origins of Dracula as it were. Oldman shows up as Vlad Tepes, hamming it up something fierce in the wonkiest armor you'll ever lay eyes upon, whil Wynona Ryder stinks up the screen with her slobbering melodrama. Hollywood filmaking at its worst. Coppola pulls out ALL the stops and attempts an operatic "bleeding cross" set piece that is beyond goofy mcgoof.



Things don't improve much once Keanu Reeves shows up as Jonathan Harker. Oh yeah, and the terribly miscast Wynona Ryder sticks around for the entire rest of the film. But the journey to Castle Dracula is done relatively well with some fabulous production design...once again excepting costume designer Eiko Eishioka, who's garish wardrobe choices for The Count almost ruin the atmospherics. He's not the proprietor of an opium den. Still, this is by far the best part of the movie -- if only Keanu Reeves could act...



Some bad double entendres and all too clever dialogue ensues ("You've found my Minna"), and then it's back to 1890s Cliff Notes and Wynona's horrid British accent. It's insufferable.



This is a really obnoxious film. Look no further than the cloying, wankerish usage of "Bram Stoker" in the title, as if this is the "real deal". How many of you have read much Bram Stoker? Because he was a one-trick pony, and Dracula was the one creation he made that was not a COMPLETE bore. But it's not that spectacular of a book. And this ain't that book anyhow.



High marks for effects and sheer audacity, but an D for execution.

I actually saw this movie in 2001. I hadn't planned on reviewing it on Amazon until I noticed so many recent, positive reviews. Here's my entry, to offset the imbalance created by those positive reviews:



This is the type of movie which would be best to watch on a Saturday morning when you're extremely ill and have neither the energy nor desire to find the remote so as to change channels or, get up and manually do so.



As with the Blair Witch Project, much hype accompanied this film, none of which was deserved. The "fight" scenes were touted as the best ever. What you actually get is a lot of sword and sword-like play filmed at close quarters for the most part, so that you are unable to see any artistry in the choreography. Since it is a period piece, they use reproductions of Chinese clothing from way back when so it's hard to see any action as the long robes and sleeves whirl about.



In addition to the swirling robes which obscure the action, the film is waaay too long and, it seems to employ all the old, shopworn plots used in the majority of martial arts movies: the good guy's master is killed and his death must be avenged, there is a sacred object which has been stolen and must be recovered (in this case, it is not stolen once, but TWICE!), there are two schools of fighting - one is evil and one is good, the good guy comes across an extremely talented fighter and wants to serve as master/teacher (Hey! If this person could kick the good guy's butt, why would this person need a teacher?), the person whom everyone thinks is a tough guy is actually a tough girl (Yo! Add some carrots to your diet - you didn't notice the arched eyebrows, soft skin and small hands on your masked toughie?).



My number one complaint (and as you can see, I have many) is the use of that stupid Matrix-like technique in the fight scenes.You know, the one where people run in mid-air and fight in mid-air and simply hang in mid-air. It looked stupid when it was first used and now, several movies later, it looks just as lame. We have people flying all over the place and walking among the treetops. Gimme a break! Everything else is done on the up and up, then they want you to suspend ALL belief in gravity and reality.



The film is in Mandarin Chinese which, luckily, I am fluent in (just kidding). I have no quarrel with movies which must be "read," but I DO have a quarrel with movies like this one which simply stink.



One good point: The scenery is beautiful. The trees were especially attractive...until people started walking all over them.



My rating: 1 star (a little something for the trees)

Well as much as I enjoyed his cds before the movie I didn't really think much of the movie. I was there the first day with a bunch of friends thinking "Hey this movie is gonna be terrible" the trailers were decent but it made it seem eminem was just going off this poor white boy story.



However the story shows growing up poor, the rap game underground, battling, love, betrayal, and hell it was even funny. Everyone came through with acting, even eminem, which really surprised me. It wasn't a Oscar awarding performance but it was good enough that he didn't hurt the film, he played his character well even though he stated he only lived in trailer park for two days in his life in the movie he played a kid who's lived there years.



Overall with the final battle being great for rap fans it's an enjoyable movie for all looking for a good kickback rap in the 90's type of film with a decent story following.

I think it had the potential to be a grab-you-by-the-lapels type of gangster movie, but it never pulls it off. It fails to do that because it gets caught up in a great deal of back story that focuses attention away from any chases or action.
