Excelente puesta en escena, eso si extraña maqueta aparece en primer plano, no entiendo porqué siendo una grabación reciente sólo se limiten a sonido estéreo y no emplearon sonido envolvente.

Excellent presentation, that if strange model appears in the foreground, not understand why being a recent recording only be limited to stereo sound and not employed surround sound.

@# Claudio Abbado Mahler Symphony No. 3 Blu ray

Mahler's 3rd Symphony is my favourite work of this great composer. A massive work in its conception, this symphony develops in six movements, each movement capturing one particular aspect of Nature or the Universe, starting from the Earth itself (a hymn to god Pan) and progressively moving up through the realms of nature, to the flowers, the animals, man, the angels and finally Love (the sixth movement is one of the most beautiful & important moments of Western music).

I do not have words to describe the beauty either of this music or of the performance. I will only say that I have heard quite a few performances of this work and only few have the subtlety of feeling that Abbado and his Lucerne Festival Orchestra have. There are points where Mahler's exquisite chromatic harmonies could not sound clearer or better than this. Everything is just right, exactly as it should be. The soloists are top-notch, the sound on the DVD good and this is Abbado's masterpiece.

Not to be missed. Also, check out the Boulez recording, which is almost as good.

++ Gomorrah Criterion Collection Blu ray

This movie is a shocking experience for a lover of the beautiful, romantic and classically tasteful Italy - which of course is a tourists naive perception of Europe's former fascist but always charming bad boy - bella Italia. Italy is also dirty, violent and full of fear and oppression, orchestrated by incompetent politicians and intellectuals scared and running (as the author of the novel that the script is based on). The working class has given up on job prospects and deal in dope and death. Blocks of apartments function as fortresses for the underclass mob soldiers. Two young kids are our fix points and we follow an actual hand full of main characters in a web of stories - a style developed by the late master director, Robert Altman. In 'Gomorrah' we learn that from the bottom to the top, Napoli/Italy/Europe seems entangled in crime, drugs and corruption. An early, ugly death is always right around the corner - illegal guns (for hire) are everywhere. As is toxic waste, worth it's price in gold if you can get it 'disposed of' - and no problem, the mafia will do the job, complete with child labor, illegal immigrants and smooth talk, with a threat lurking right underneath the surface. Master acting takes place here, some of the best actors around do great work in this movie! Young and old. Another story shows beauty unfold in the haute couture and T-shirt section of this old, industrial city Naples in decay and simultaneous transformation, yet still ruled by almost prehistoric brutality and cynicism. One of Italy's core industries, clothes production, is being taken over by Chinese immigrant factories - here we see the consequences... from the innocent boy and the sublime but exploited tailor to the lowest, psychopathic killer - the 'Camorra' - Napoli's deep rooted mafia dynasty/network of families - control everything!

Fantastic interview disc is extremely informative and adds tremendously to this package. Totally worth the time and money (the movie is not for the kids and it's loooong, yet not a minute too long, so set aside a whole evening, send the children to bed early - and then enjoy). This film's images and themes keep popping up in the mind, weeks after you watch it - it's really grabs you and won't let go... so I do not hesitate recommending it highly. A true masterpiece!

#*# My Cousin Vinny Blu ray

Bill Gambini and Stanley Rothenstein are 2 friends from New York University that just received scholarships to UCLA. They decide to drive through the south. Once they arrive in Alabama, they stopped at a local convenience store to pick up a few snacks. But, no sooner that they left the store, they were arrested. They had thought that they were arrested for shoplifting, but they were arrested for murder and robbery. Plus, they are facing execution for this crime. Bill and Stan do not have enough money for a lawyer, good news, that Bill has a lawyer in his family, his cousin, Vincent Laguardia Gambini. Bad news, is that Vinny is an inexperienced lawyer who has not been in a trial. So, Vinny has to defend his clients and battle an uncompromising judge, some tough locals, and even his fiancée, Mona Lisa Vito who just does not know when to shut up, to prove his clients' innocence. But he will soon realize that he is going to need help. This dialogue is brilliant because of excellent performances by both Marisa Tomei and Joe Pesci. This is one of those rare movies that you can watch over and over again for hours and not tire of it. This is a truly memorable piece of comedy, and though it was released in 1992, I'm sure comedy lovers will enjoy this movie in the present day.

Too many of the self-professing comedies coming out of Hollywood these days are unfunny rubbish and not worth the time of day, let alone the price of a DVD.

'Night at the Museum' however is a rare treat.

A guy down on his luck takes up a night watchman job at a museum where all the exhibits come to life at night. A very cool concept that should set the viewers up for a very entertaining movie. But does it actually work? Yes it does. Is it actually funny? Yes it is.

A well written movie with excellent casting, acting, and dialogue. The special effects are very well done.

#$ While She Was Out Blu ray

Although "While She Was Out" boasts an original twist or two, you've basically seen it many, many times before. It's the one about the passive woman facing a threat so monstrous that she reaches down into her core and finds a transformative strength and rage she never knew she possessed. Think Jennifer Lopez in "Enough", Olivia de Havilland in "Lady in a Cage", Nicole Kidman in "Dead Calm", Debbie Reynolds in "Singin' in the Rain". (Just kidding on that last one.)

This time, Kim Basinger is the lady. An abused wife and mother, she goes to the mall on Christmas Eve, and leaves a note on a car taking up two spaces in a crowded lot. Predictably, the car belongs to a gang of four psychopathic toughs who kill the mall cop that comes to her rescue. She manages to escape in her vehicle, but wrecks it in a new property development surrounded by woods, and flees into the forest with her trusty tool box, the murderous gang hot on her heels.

All this might be kind of silly fun, except the screenplay asks the audience to stretch belief beyond the breaking point. Despite the enormity of the forest at night, the gang tracks her down by (no, I'm not making this up) picking up the lingering scent of her perfume and sweat in the air, by tracking little droplets of her blood, by shining their flashlight in just the right spot while she's standing in the open. Of course, she helps them out by whimpering and thrashing through the forest with as much noise as possible. Plus, she stands in the middle of a shallow stream and screams at the top of her lungs, "God! Where are you God?!!" ... hardly a smart thing to do if you're trying to avoid detection.

That the movie is even watchable is attributable to a fairly engaging performance by Kim Basinger as the lady in distress (she also co-produced) and a valiant effort by Lukas Haas as the leader of the gang. Haas has some of the worst dialogue ever written, and he almost ... almost ... manages to make it sound credible. There is also a wonderful payoff in the final shot of the film, and so it ends on an intriguing note. Unfortunately, these credits don't nearly begin to make up for the film's obvious detriments, and so I can't recommend a purchase. Rent it if you're a Basinger or Haas fan; otherwise, you might want to skip this one altogether.

This was the very first Blu-Ray movie that I purchased from Amazon after getting a player last year, and watching it in High-Definition was simply amazing.

I had already seen Pitch Black on DVD, and based on the sounds and visuals, I figured that Blu-Ray would bring the movie to life. I'm glad to say that I wasn't the least bit disappointed. The colors look amazing, the audio is great, and the level of detail was just unreal. I did read a few comments from other reviewers about the Blu-Ray freezing up on them, but fortunately that has never happened to me. I've since purchased countless Blu-Ray movies, but Pitch Black is easily one of my favorites to watch in HDTV.

There's enough story to keep everyone coming back to watch more, but at the same time, free to pop some corn, get some ice cream or use the facilities.

A delightful movie with Michael Douglas playing a completely unexpected role. The film is a darkish comedy with heartwarming overtones. Watching the Father/Daughter relationship grow is worth more than the gold, supposidly buried under the local Costco, that Dad is planning on digging up.

This is a giggle picture, not a fall off your seat, hysterical fit type of comedy; but you'll be constantly entertained and still be able to use the bathroom without any danger.

$*$ Lost The Complete Third Season Blu ray

Season 3 of Lost is my least favorite season of the show so far, but that's not to say it is bad. It still has it moments of greatness. The first half of the season deals with our main castaways being held captive by the Others. Kate and Sawyer spend a lot of time together, and Jack meets an Other named Juliet. The complex relationships between the characters creates more tension than in previous seasons. If you care more about the characters and their relationships, this season might be for you. Fans of the science fiction aspects of Lost, who want the answers to their questions about the island and the DHARMA initiative, will have to wait until the second half of the season to get a taste of what they're looking for. My personal favorite episode is "The Man From Tallahassee", in which we learn about how Locke came to be in a wheelchair. The scenes between Michael Emerson (Ben) and Terry O'Quinn (Locke) are just fun to watch.

Just as the previous two seasons of Lost, Season 3 is a seven-disc set with plenty of bonus material. There are the usual Lost Flashbacks, which are never-before-seen segments into a character's past. The Lost on Location featurettes show various aspects of production of different episodes. The best feature in Season 3 is "Lost in a Day", where cameras take us into a time span of 24 hours, where seven episodes are in different stages - some being planned and written, others being filmed or edited.

In summary, Season 3 is perhaps the weakest season of Lost, but it's still quite good and it moves the series into a new realm by giving more insight into the history of the Others, the DHARMA Initiative, and the powers of the island.

I had very high expectations for this movie, especially since it was highly recommended by my younger brother. I have to say, it did not meet my expectations and it was a poorly excuted movie to be honest.

the biggest problem with it, was the poor character development, they really failed to build up solid characters. and i felt lost between all those characters whom i know nothing about and eventually not caring about any.

the plot was simple. but nothing special.

the other problem was the dialogue, this movie had one of the worst dialogues ever, was really boring and not intersting at all.

having said that, i must admit that the action scenes and special effects were stunning at times, i especially enjoyed the street chase scene in Paris. but once the action stopped, the movie dragged and seemed boring and slow.

I can see why some might give this 5 stars or find it entertaining, but in summary, i found it boring and worth only 2 stars for the mighty action scenes alone. a poorly excuted movie.

                      By Peter Solomon

Memories, Dreams and Reflections - Isle Wight 1970.

Me and... Leonard Cohen at Isle of Wight 1970 and 2009

By Peter Solomon 1970 and 2009

I was just two months shy of my seventeenth birthday at 4 am on August 31 1970 and I knew all the words, I was maybe 50 to 75 yards from the stage just outside the overrun VIP and Press enclosure and Leonard Cohen was about to appear on stage at the Isle of Wight Festival.

My older brother Chris was to blame for me being there, for he introduced me to Leonard Cohen, and I had become smitten, I had caught the Leonard Cohen bug big time, which I would be unable to shake off for the rest of my life.

I knew all the songs and all about Marianne, Suzanne and Nancy. And I knew Tonight Will Be Fine, for I had waited 5 days and nights with hardly any sleep, after hitch hiking 250 miles with a friend Johnny Vernon from Manchester in the north of England to be there. I had just slept through most of Jimi Hendrix's set, though disappointed to have missed him, that was unimportant as I had come to see Leonard Cohen, and was slowing moving forward to get as close as possible to the stage.

Looking back now after nearly 40 years it seems like a dream and I have woken up and am watching the DVD of my Dream, compulsively, 3 consecutive times so far and also listened to the whole CD. It's as if time had become dislocated and the warp and woof of reality expanded to include a 40 year Present Moment.

As I watch I am really identifying very intensely with almost spiritual longing with that young man at the beginning of the DVD who was about my age, it was like coming to Bethlehem to see baby Jesus he says, except Leonard Cohen is no 'baby Jesus', and it also felt as much like Babylon as Bethlehem, with Fires, Chaos and Free Love all on display. But it was still like a holy pilgrimage for me.

I wanted so much to connect the 2 time-streams, as I watched Leonard on the DVD, the present with the past, to be there again, with my 17 year old self who was waving matches in the night, through the cold mists of time, trying to signal his presence to his future self. The strangeness of being a mere part, a cell in the huge Beast of Babylon that was the crowd, a Body of 600,000 people. You Know Who I Am, You've Stared at the Sun, sang the poet and prophet in the middle of the night and we stared at the stage where there was a human star burning with such bright intensity, as we stood in awe in the vast dark, small points of light, our matches in our hands.

The 1970 Leonard Cohen never looked so prickly and real, so unshaven, so raw and human yet so sensitive and spiritual, so powerful and yet so frail. So spaced out yet so centred in the moment. Speaking and singing from the heart with words and songs that communicate with the souls of men. He looked like some suffering Christ like figure that came to tell the world the truth but had just been woken up and did not really want to bother.

This was the biggest rock festival in the history of the world and there has not been anything like it since. I was there to see Leonard Cohen in 1970 at the Isle of Wight and feel after viewing the DVD in 2009 that events like these go beyond their stated purpose and moment, reverberate through time and become cracks in the fabric of the world and as Leonard would say, `that's how the light get's in', we enter a Communion with the Higher Powers. "We pray for the angels and then the angels pray for us" to misquote LC. The negative forces on Devastation Hill become insignificant, they had played their part to pump up the intensity and now are just another part of the story, another part of the myth... of how the artist calms the savage beast and opens a spiritual channel for transcendent love to flow and manifest in the world.

Leonard Cohen's words and songs are mined from the very deepest heart and soul. They are like the golden thread from some magical loom, which weave their way through time and remain with us from moment to moment, as we grow older they make our lives richer, more meaningful and bearable.

I am so pleased to have had this chance to be transported back 40 years in time and relive my younger days again. It`s been an experience full of unique and extraordinary memories and emotions. And thanks to Leonard Cohen for being a beacon of light in the darkness of the world, truly he transcends past and present, to bring us the timeless truth of the heart.

If you want to know what it was like to be at one of the defining moments in musical history...buy this DVD/CD.

                          • For nearly 200 million years while dinosaurs roamed the Earth, the seas teemed with some of the most awe-inspiring ocean creatures of all time. Sea Monsters, a National Geographic Giant Screen film, is an entertaining journey into prehistoric oceans. Inter-cutting between the animated story and the reenactments of fossil discoveries combine the appeal of ?Indiana Jones? with the CGI that brings th

Back when Bill Paxton was coming off of some great 90's work, Matthew McConaughey was trying to be seen as a serious actor, Harvey Keitel was starring in everything and Jon Bon Jovi was trying his hand at acting, `U-571' was born. Like so many have stated, this film looks great, it sounds great and in the end it is rather entertaining, BUT the biggest flaw is the most noticeable and the one that will forever mar this from being anything worth my time and attention.

                          It's stupid.

Not only is the film largely formatted for the taste of American's (who would have ever thought I'd ethically battle a Matthew McConaughey film?) but the script is obviously thrown together with the most preposterous of direction.

It's almost as if it wasn't even trying.

The sad thing with a film like this is that it is supposed to be serious and believable. When you are dealing with a subject as strongly enrooted as WWII you need to handle with care so-to-speak. You can't take so many liberties, and while some can be somewhat forgiven (I mean, I understand the `leaning' towards the American side of things since this is a Hollywood film made from the American point of view) they really should be. I mean, film of this nature should at least attempt to be honest.

And what saddens me even more is that the film is reduced to a state of ridiculousness, with one impossible sequence after another. It's one thing for a sci-fi popcorn muncher in the vein of `Armageddon' to pull out all stops in the `preposterous' side of things, for a film like that is supposed to suspend our disbelief. It's another thing entirely when a film about a widely discussed and historically chronicled war is played with in a way that basically makes a mockery of a very serious and very controversial subject.

If you're not going to take it seriously then don't do it at all.

But, I guess the whole `starring Matthew McConaughey' should have been ample warning.

So, in the end I have to say `skip this one'. Yes, the effects are solid and the overall tone and feel of the film is `authentic', but the film borders on insulting with its handling of the subject matter.

Have you ever watched a movie where the only good scenes in the movie were the exact ones in the trailer? That's what happened with Year One.

The only funny scene in this movie is when Michael Cera's character asks to adjust his helmet and announces he forgot his sword. That same clip was on the trailer, which I laughed at, and was the reason I even saw this movie. I assumed the rest of the movie would be just as funny.

But it wasn't. First of all, I don't think Jack Black is funny. I think he tries too hard to be silly and goofy and it doesn't do anything for me.

Michael Cera's mumbling, awkward adolescent act worked on the show "Arrested Development", but it wasn't enough to save a bad script.

So, besides that one funny scene, the rest of the movie was a bore.

A PG-13 horror movie that eschews gore and sex for low-key suspense. While sluggish at times, the movie offers teens who aren't so obnoxious we want them dead and the acting is above average. As for the twist ending, there are subtle clues early on that justify this ending which still took me by surprise. I liked this movie..a good break from all the "torture" flicks and unnecessary remakes.

I purchased the Bluray version a few months ago and was disappointed to find that it would not load - I tried it on recent Panasonic and a Sony bluray players, and in both cases, the TV showed "Loading" for a very long time, and I had to eject the disc or even power off the player to interrupt the process.

HOWEVER, some weeks later, after ordering a DVD version to replace the Bluray, I gave the bluray one last try. This time I just popped it in the player, and left it. I came back about 20 minutes later and the menu had appeared! I was then able to play all of the programs on the disc without problem or delay, and the picture looked stunning. I tried again on the other bluray player, and the same result - I had to wait for about 12-15 minutes for the menu to appear, and when it did, all was fine with playback.

There is obviously something not quite right here, but the disc is playable, and once you get past the ridiculous disc loading time, the experience of navigating and watching is very nice indeed. I did contact PBS before I made this discovery, alerting them to a problem with the disc - they stated that they had no record of any problem. So it seems like there is no effort being made to address the issue.

Perhaps it only affects some players. But we are now happy that this bluray we formerly thought was unplayable is in fact OK. I rate this disc highly for its content, with one star taken off because of the crazy load time.

I'd seen this movie more than a few times when I decided to buy it on blu-ray in order test a new big screen TV.

Regarding the story, it was pretty good and well worth seeing but not as good as "Wrath of Khan". If you want a synopsis, sorry, I'm not writing one. There are too many excellent ones just a quick search away.

As for the movie on blu-ray - WOW! I've seen it in theaters, in planes, on DVD, etc, but never in high-def. The detail was simply incredible. I'm glad I was so familiar with the story because I was focused on all sorts of little viewing details. The movie was definitely shot in a manner that transferred well to high def. During the first scenes I was distracted by the actor's complexions. Amazing. Just amazing.

In summary, if you haven't seen this movie then you should see it. If you haven't seen it in high-def, you should do that too.

One evening there was nothing else to watch so I picked this for background noise. After a few minutes I found myself watching the movie and laughing. This has to be one of the best animated features out there. Monsters, Inc. boasts a stellar cast: John Goodman, Billy Crystal, Steve Buscemi, Jennifer Tilly, and James Coburn! Imagine that kind of talent creating the monsters' personalities, woven together by an extremely clever story line, brought to life by award winning animation and you get a film that you can watch again and again. It is funny, touching, and a great reason to bring your friends together for movie night. This is one tickles the inner child in us all.
