#@: Contempt Le M pris Blu ray

The blu-ray of this movie looks terrific, as does Bridget Bardot.

As to the substance of the film: What? There is about 45 minutes of a couple moping around in a near empty apartment arguing about nothing in particular. This film is the biggest bunch of nothing I've ever seen. Will someone please educate me as to why anyone thinks this nonsense has any merit or worth?

    @# American Psycho Blu ray

American Psycho stars Christian Bale as the status conscious Patrick Bateman, who is also a ghoulish killing machine. The movie satirizes the yuppie culture of materialism, using a modern day "Ted Bundy" serial killer. American Psycho is set in the 1980's and Patrick Bateman is a broker in New York. His colleagues are young men his age, who vie for the best business cards, restaurant reservations, ties, and suits. It all seems so meaningless and sterile as they arrogantly discuss what trendy restaurant to eat dinner at each night at a local club.

Patrick Batemen lives in a expensive New York apartment and starts each morning with a shower and narcissistic regimen of skin care. He is misogynistic, and self centered, spending time with same-aged colleagues sharing a obsession over classy business cards, designer glasses, ties and suits. His public personality hides a murderous rage at small frustrations. When his anger mounts then it is taken out on anyone, including his do-worker, prostitutes, homeless men and models. During the murders he plays music and critiques the songs of Huey Lewis and Phil Collins. Chloe Sevigny plays Patrick's secretary and Reese Witherspoon plays his fiance. Both are wonderful actresses and give the movie some depth. Although there are many murders in the movie, the actual killing scenes are not graphic, although plenty of blood and bodies are seen throughout. Patrick gets away with everything with his public persona - clean cut professional - just like Ted Bundy. Even as Patrick is loading a full body bag in the car a friend comes up and comments what a gorgeous bag - is it Armani? Patrick grunts and groans as he puts the body in the trunk and responds the correct designer. There is no one who really suspects him, and he has a lawyer who covers his trial when an outside detective starts asking questions. He is highly protected in a world of money and style.

American Psycho is a great satire on Yuppie culture.

      #@: Unforgiven Blu ray

I'm not certain how much I would like "Unforgiven" if I had never seen a Western before. I suspect I would still consider it a masterpiece. But approaching it from the perspective of decades of watching "Cowboys and Indians", I view Clint Eastwood's Oscar winner as one of the most important achievements in film history.

Eastwood created the Man With No Name personna in Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns, masterpieces that changed the genre. But Unforgiven elevates "The Western" to a level I think will never be approached again. "Unforgiven" is to The Western as "The Godfather" is to the gangster movie.

In old Lone Ranger era Westerns the hero wore a white hat and dispatched bad guys in morally unambiguous gunfights. By the end of John Wayne's career in cowboy pictures heroes weren't as clearly defined. In pictures like "The Searchers" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" the heroes had skeletons in their closets. Then Leone's films made the West seem an even grittier, sweatier place, and there was more than a little anti-hero in the leading characters. Still, gunfights happened quickly and the winner was always a dead-eye who could shoot the wings off a gnat at a hundred paces. The losers of gunfights fell quickly and silently to their death.

In Unforgiven Eastwood gives us a vision we can imagine as closer to the truth. His character William Munny was once "a known thief and murderer, a man of notoriously vicious and intemperate disposition," as we're told in the opening title card. We learn Bill Munny was once the most dangerous of a group of outlaws in hints that are given leading up to the climax. But Munny has been changed by marriage. His comely wife has died of smallpox, leaving him a poor pig farmer with two children. He hasn't shot at a man in eleven years. We can feel his struggle for redemption. In addition to giving up his previous life as a criminal, he has stopped drinking and, when given the opportunity at a woman younger and prettier than him, he declines out of respect for his dead wife.

But Bill Munny's demons are old and powerful. A group of prostitutes pool their money and spread the word that they'll pay a bounty for the death of a bad-tempered cowboy who cuts one of them. Jaimz Woolvett plays The Schofield Kid, who has heard of William Munny and how he was the meanest cold-blooded killer alive. Munny initially declines the Kid's offer, but the Munny family is poor, and the prostitutes' bounty is tempting.

Bill rounds up old partner Ned Logan, played by the always brilliant Morgan Freeman. You get the feeling that Ned wasn't as bad as Munny in the old days, but you also get the idea that Ned isn't as "reformed" as Munny.

Gene Hackman gives a superlative performance as Little Bill Daggett, the Sheriff of the town with the prostitutes. In an early scene Daggett beats bounty hunter "English Bob" (played by the late, great Richard Harris) half to death, and vows to do worse to any other bounty hunter's seeking the "whores' gold".

Unforgiven re-writes the legend of the west. Shifting shades of grey replace black and white. The Man With No Name could shoot a gnat mid-flight, but William Munny takes shooting practice at a tin can with a pistol, misses several shots, then finally dispatches the can with a shotgun blast. The gunfight losers in old school westerns did their dying quickly and quietly, while a victim in this film dies slowly, in agony and begging for a drink of water.

In an expository scene halfway through Hackman explains to a hack writer (acting as a one-man Greek chorus and wonderfully played by Saul Rubinek) that the stories of famous gunfights that circulated among taverns and dime novels of the day were wild exaggerations made up by the survivors to make themselves look faster and deadlier and more noble than they really were.

Eastwood gives a master's class in film story-telling. He tells us - then he shows us. Every other Western appears a wolf-in-sheep's clothing in comparison. This film is the whole Wolf, and makes no apologies about it. If a greater Western than "Unforgiven" is ever made - I can't wait to see it.

$*$ Cosmic Voyage Destiny in Space Blu ray

Back in gradeschool there was a wonderful day when we were shown "Powers of Ten". It was very fast, and very short, but one of the most jam-packed mind-expanding experiences available. In short, a math concept (the logarithm) is used zooming out, and then in, to give you a tour from wide astronomy to partical physics. Well let me tell how far we've come...

Some of the graphics in this 1996 feature were rendered by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). That means significant supercomputing, programming, and visualization research went into our best scientific understanding of how galaxies cluster, at the farthest scale of the universe, and you get to fly around through it in this video. But of course it's the whole trip out there (and back), that's so appealing.

I have to admit i've only seen this 2008 rerelease in a planetarium. I doubt the same visual shock will fit in widescreen, but even if the movie loses half its visual effect, the sense of wonder - the opportunity to think big (and small) - will remain.

BTW, the original "Powers of Ten" is by Charles and Ray Eames, 1977. There's a version reproduced with permission on YouTube, and since it's only 9 minutes long, you can get a taste of the theme quickly, for free. Comparing versions, we have added two powers of ten to our knowledge since then, and the graphics are way better.

      #*# Brothers Blu ray

First of all I must say the acting from all the primary characters was masterful. The story content however was depressing and fell short at the end. If you're looking for a movie depicting how war makes people do terrible things and ruins families, this is it. If you're looking for something about working thru hard times and pulling thru together, plan to be disappointed. All in all the story felt incomplete. Jake G's character was getting close to being more than an ex-con but never quite got there, ended as a jerk trying to be better. Toby M's actions as a prisoner were inexcusable and dishonorable and not suprisingly haunted him at home. My father was a WWII vet and I am certain down to my toes that he would have died before taking the life of a fellow American soldier to save his own. Fear and being a hostage does strange things to people but Toby's character lost it for me when he took that step. Natalie P's character never quite crosses the line into infidelity but just skirts it, so the love triangle the film leads you to expect falls flat. Good for her but made the movie more of a dud. The story ends on a downturn with Toby M in military custody, mentally unstable and Natalie willing to stay by his side though he can't commit to anything. Overall just plain depressing to watch. Movies don't have to be all hearts and flowers for me to enjoy them, I love a good Clint Eastwood crime flick. Brothers left me irritated with the characters, too many unresolved issues and with nothing positive,no honor at the end. It doesn't really end either, it just stops. At least Clint gets the bad guys in his movies. In Brothers, the good guys turned into bad guys. If it had gone farther, had Toby apologise to the family he destroyed or man-up in court for his actions,it could have been so much better. I'd much rather watch "Band Of Brothers" about real ordinary guys, real hero's. Wish I had rented this instead of buying, doubt I will ever watch it again.

I purchased this because the price was quite low at around seven bucks...but now I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it because it's pretty boring to watch and I didn't think that the scenes were that impressive either. One of the scenes was a slow, very slow, panning out of a waterfall...I can't imagine why anyone would want to sit around watching this. Clearly this is meant to be played in the background while you're doing something else...but if that's the case, wouldn't a CD suffice?

#*# Robotech The Shadow Chronicles Blu ray

Robotech the Shadow Chronicles [RtSC] is Harmony Gold's first real attempt to breath life into what had become, at least in the US, a dormant giant.

I personally feel the movie ranks 3.5 out of five, so I rounded up. RtSC is basically the 88min pilot for what will become the next Saga of Robotech, adding a fourth to the previous three of the original show. I consider it to be more of an OAV episode than a stand alone movie, and indeed HG is at the moment working on a new sequel, Robotech Shadow Rising, and a live action adaptation of the original series with Tobey Maguire and Warner Brothers.

My only real complaints stem from the fact that RtSC did not have nearly a big enough budget. Lets face it, bringing back a dormant franchise after nearly 20 years is a risky business. There are a few little things that could have been fixed, mostly minor animation problems or goofs.

On the whole RtSC is a fun start that came closer, I think, than anyone realistically expected to recapturing the elements that made the original so great and enduring. If you are a Robotech or anime fan this one is a must, if you are curious, I would suggest starting with the original series first, then getting this movie when you are done.

Based on a true story, Zodiac is a psychological thriller gem. The director is Fincher and he creates a thick web of character-driven plot lines.

The beginning scene shows the first murders and the victim's pain and fear. Each scene holds your attention as the movie examines one man's obsession with finding the truth and one man's need to kill.

In 1968, the San Francisco Chronile receives a letter with the Zodiac's ciphers. A cartoonist by the name of Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal), loves puzzles and as a former Boy Scout, he tries to decode the messages. Paul Avery (Robert Downey, Jr.) is a reporter that wants to advance in his career and looks at this as an opportunity to do so. As this is going on, several investigators from four jurisdictions ardently look for the elusive Killer. Dave Toschi (Mark Fuffalo) and Bill Armstrong (Anthony Edwards) clash with news reporters, including Avery and Graysmith. Graysmith keeps an interest in this case, and also writes a book about it. The movie follows the investigation from 1968 - 1984 - a long, suspenseful search by Graysmith even after others have retired, given up, or just want to spend more time with their families. The thriller is focused on dialogue, tenuous clues, and riveting cat and mouse maneuvers.

Superbly entertaining! EPIC! Brad Pitt is AMAZING as Achilles. Eric Bana is superb as Hector, Diane Krueger is loveliness itself (Helen was golden-haired) and Sir Peter O'Toole, while I thought him too 'white' for the part, is such a good actor that I forgot his paleness and was thoroughly taken in by his performance, as well as everyone elses, right down to the baby playing Hector's son.

Everthing about this movie is SPLENDID, acting, screenwriting, costumes, sets, cinematography, special effects, music, etc, etc....

While the actual war lasted some 10 years (hence the thousand ships), considerably condensed for the purposes of movie making and some aspects of the story were changed, this movie is thoroughly engaging entertainment.

Pairing him with a hairy orangutan buddy Clyde, as his co-star,while he supplements his income as a bare-knuckle fighter is unlikely to say the least, but it works well in this enjoyable movie. Chasing his paramour Sondra Locke, who jilted him for some nerdy wimp, through some of the prettiest country in the Rocky Mountain west makes for some great viewing in the Blu ray format.

Complications in the form of an over the hill motorcycle gang, and bumbling sherriff's deputies are all handled deftly by Clint's punches and even in one case by Clyde's straight right jab.

Ruth Gordon, who plays "Ma" is priceless as a "defenseless old woman" left on her own when Clint and his buddies leave to hunt for Locke. She turns out to be as defenseless as a swat team when harrassed by the inept biker gang.

This is just one big advertisement for getting stoned. I actually felt embarrassed for the actors. What were they thinking?! As for the writer and director, well I have my own theories about where they got their "inspiration" for this story. I've watched my fair share of surfing movies, and they run the gamut from corny to nostalgia to documentary, appealing to people casually interested in the sport, to die hard surfing addicts. But this movie fails to make the grade at all, and doesn't deserve to be named among this genre.
