++ The Young Victoria Blu ray

This movie deserved its Acadamy Awards nominations. The script is well paced, the set design and costumes are spot-on perfect, and the acting is impeccable. Both Ruppert Friend and Emily Blunt must have researched Victoria and Albert meticulously. It is always a privilege to see such talent and relentless dedication in the arts, especially (at least for me) when the medium is used to bring such an interesting history to life.

          @# Premonition Blu ray

I see plot holes sinking this ship!

Premonition is about a woman, Linda (somewhat believably played by Sandra Bullock) who in some mysterious way is living out another time period where her husband dies about two weeks later.

What gets me about Linda is how it takes her so darn long to figure out what is happening. For example, she sees a bottle of lithium that was dumped down the drain in her sink and has no idea how it got there. She looks at the bottle and it has a doctor's name on it, Dr. Roth. Then later, when she falls asleep she reawakens in her new world, looks up Dr. Roth whom she has not met yet. She tries to explain what's happening to her, where she believes her husband is dead but he's not really dead. Dr. Roth thinks she's nuts and gives her a bottle of lithium. Later in the day, she dumps it in the bathroom sink.

Does she say to herself, "Wow, that's just like in my earlier dream!" Or say "Maybe since I've reliving this before I will see what I can do to change it." Nope, no clue. The audience (me) is frustrated that Linda is not figuring out any of this.

The characters are very cardboard. Her mom, for example, has her committed to Dr. Roth's care because of something that happened to one of her children (we don't yet know why at this point). No real explanation other than implying Linda somehow was responsible for her daughter being cut up. Later in the tale, when she relives the earlier time (yeah, confusing, and convoluted) her daughter goes through a plate glass window.

Now, why would her mother call the psychs to lock up Linda if Linda had nothing to do with her daughter getting cut up. Don't get it.

          Oh wait, gets better!

Linda finally figures out (she's pretty slow) that she's reliving some other time. She makes a calendar of sorts and starts to figure out what's going on, without telling her mom because of her predilection for locking up daughters in mental hospitals.

Another throw-away scene tries to explain what's going on. A priest she visits (not sure who or why) opens a book (which is not explained where he got it) that goes over people reliving other times and see them as warnings. He then goes over how some people can't change this because "nature abhors a vacuum" and that if you don't have faith or love then you are doomed to your fate.

OK, fine. She takes this to heart. She tries to love her husband and children more. She tries really hard. And then [SPOILER] the thing that she fears happens anyway, DESPITE her efforts! Inexorable fate. Can't change it, despite faith and hope. Yuk! [END SPOILER]

Sandra Bullock walks through her part, a bit clueless and has a cheating husband on her hands who is also clueless.

The script does not have that neat Hollywood polish of a happy ending which, frankly it really needed!

Like Clooney's "Perfect Storm", you love the characters and yet they meet their end anyway. The film makes you feel empty and lifeless. Not suicidal, but almost.

There are much, much better Bullock movies. Skip this one.

but for a movie put out in 2008 it is pricey. You would think it'd be down to $13 or $14 by now.

To the movie: I've seen it a half dozen times and it still never fails to get to me. The animation itself is well done, the storyline exceptional. Before 5 minutes are up, you've already fallen in love with WALL-E and want him to get his lost love. The, uh, "courtship" between WALL-E and EVE is hilarious. I crack up over the shopping carts every time.

Not to give away too much and spoil it, WALL-E is alone on the garbage heap known as Earth, except for his roach companion. A space ship shows up with a flying robot, EVE, here to check for plant life. WALL-E is immediately smitten and works to get her (it's??)attention even if it means following her wherever she/it goes.

Is it worth the inflated new price? Probably. Truly this is a very good movie, fine for the whole family, and one you'll watch more than once.

$ Kagemusha The Criterion Collection Blu ray

Watching two of Kurosawa's later films, "Kagemusha" and "Ran" (1985) reminds me of an anecdote concerning the great director. In the aftermath of the terrible 1923 (Kanto) Tokyo earthquake which killed an estimated 100,000 to 140,000 people, Akira's older brother took the young boy to see the mountains of bodies. Akira, understandably afraid, averted his eyes, not being able to bear the sight of the charred bodies (many of the casualties were caused by the gas pipes rupturing and causing flash fires). His brother forced him to look at the carnage, pointing out that to look at anything in the eyes is to dispel the fear that it brings.

I always find the anecdote oddly comforting, because I always think that out of this terrible tragedy and Kurosawa's traumatic experience came the seeds of a temerity, a boldness and assuredness in confronting the horrors of the world. I tend to think that "Kagemusha" and the even better "Ran" are the culmination of Kurosawa's fearless examination of human frailties. Both films are wonderfully expressive in their use of colour and lead by renowned actor Nakadai Tetsuya; both deal with the ugliness of human conduct under extreme circumstances, and yet the times the films are set (in "Kagemusha"s case it is the 1570s) can be seen as a mere setting to portray the extremes of those universal qualities of human betrayal and cruelty that know neither time nor place.

To be honest, "Kagemusha" isn't up the standard of Kurosawa's classics such as "Rashomon", "Throne of Blood", "Yojimbo", or even the slightly overrated "Seven Samurai". But seeing as "Rashomon" basically invented the idea of the relativity of truth in cinema and "Yojimbo" and "Sanjuro" the Spaghetti Western tradition, it doesn't mean "Kagemusha" is a bad film. Certain scenes -the desperate flailing of upturned horses after the final battle, the bold dream sequence that almost represent Nakadai's thief character as a Godzilla tottering over a psychedelic landscape- have the power to move. And the final bleak portrayal of human carnage -even if that carnage helps to bring about the eventual reunification of Japan- imprints upon the mind of the viewer Kurosawa's unflinching view of the destiny of human greed.

DVD: Criterion have pulled out all the stops for this DVD release. The print of the film itself could perhaps be a little sharper, but it's no worse than Studio Canal's print for "Ran", and the bold coulour schema really shines through. Extras-wise, an excellent book, an insightful commentary and a second disc with a Japanese documentary on the master director and extensive interviews with project funders George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola really make this a set worth getting, even in the age of Blu-ray.

-- Resident Evil Degeneration Blu ray

I am a big fan of George A. Romero's zombie films. I'm also a fan of the Resident Evil live action movies. I'm not really a big fan of the Resident Evil videogames. That's not to say that they are bad. I've just not played most of them. I've really only played the first one many years ago. I really should play the rest someday. But besides all that, I finally decided to see Resident Evil : Degeneration and I have to say, I liked it. I thought it was a pretty good movie overall.

I still think that the live action movies are better, but, this one kept me interested throughout and that's all that you can really ask for. The characters were cool, the zombies were great, although I wished they had more zombie action in it then they did. And the obligatory monster, the G-Virus Curtis Mutant was fairly creepy and menacing as well.

The only downside that I can give it is that some of the CGI characters looked a little too rubbery and weird now and then. That's why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5. The rest of the CGI for the buildings and vehicles and explosions etcetera were pretty amazing though.

I've seen a few CGI movies over the years and enjoyed them all. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Beowulf, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and RE: Degeneration is another fine entry in the category. I am looking forward to a sequel should they ever decide to do one.

                    #$ 13 Going on 30 Blu ray

13 Going on 30: 3 out of 10: First of all, I would like to throw my full weight behind any effort to give Jennifer Garner a special Oscar for best performance in a pretty bad movie. She is delightful and plays the character much better than it was written.

In addition, I would like to absolve any of her co-stars, from any possible negative career ramifications, due to their unfortunate appearances in this film. They also did a fine job and deserve our praise. Last I would like security to please apprehend the writers (Josh Goldsmith & Cathy Yuspa) and director (Gary Winick) who I see sneaking out the fire escape.

Okay first the director is sentenced to community service for making some pretty obvious soundtrack mistakes for 1987. For example he highlights, as the supposed geeky underground song, Burning Down the House is used though it was featured as a jock anthem in the movie Revenge of the Nerds three years earlier. In addition, and even more inexplicable, as MTV fodder he highlights Thriller from 1983. By 1987 Thriller was already in the Halloween ghetto mix.

Im afraid the writers on the other hand get life in prison without parole. First question I would ask either of them. Have they ever worked in any office anywhere, let alone a supposed fashion magazine? They get so much wrong with that one small detail I don't even know where to begin.

Second, though Garner's performance is great, her character is a real mess. She finds older guys icky in one scene and is attracted to them in the next, and then she is back to icky with hardly an explanation or even an indication that the character herself notices. The she bizarrely handles her cutthroat business environment with more maturity than most thirty year olds let alone thirteen year olds.

Instead of going into a Being There, Chauncey kind of vibe where Garner's character's inane utterances would be taken as genius; the film actually makes her more proactive than either her shy thirteen year old self would be or her cutthroat thirty year old self is. No working woman cliché is of course ignored and the less said about the sappy and ridiculous ending the better. Poor Miss Garner is all over the map with this film.

The strangest part of 13 Going on 30 is that the whole body swap, time travel story line is actually the most believable part of the film. Certainly more believable than a doll house building, fairy dust collecting, fat boy next door growing up to be a thin straight single guy living in Greenwich Village or more than one drunken person remembering any of the dance moves from the Thriller video.

#$ Mozart Die Zauberflote Blu ray

This is one of the best Magic Flute performances out there. However, I feel like it could have been even better. So I'm giving it four stars.

First, the singers. Damrau is a top notch Queen of the Night. She gives us a dramatic and overbearing Queen of the Night here, someone who can be manacing even when she is on your side. I am not completely happy with this interpretation. In my opinion, in the first aria (Zotto), the Queen of the Night should be tender and vulnerable like a typical fairy queen in distress. By adding a lot of manace to her here, in my opion, Damrau undermines the dramatic surprise later when the Queen turns nasty in her second aria. I still think she is the best Queen alive, but I wish she didn't take it quite over the top.

I'll have to disagree with DeGeorge's quite excellent review here, I felt that Roschmann's Pamina was really weak. Her voice sounded thin to me and overall she seemed to be struggling to add her emotion to the pieces. Her lament aria and suicide aria did nothing for me in this rendition, and they are some of my favorites!

Selig's Sarasato was good. The problem I have is that I find Sarasato just a boring character. He's a bundle of abstract virtues and have very little human characteristic to related to. Mozart tried but couldn't quite get him to be a human. I personally haven't seen an exciting Sarasato and for this reason I don't think there can be an exciting Sarasato.

Keenlyside's Papageno was delightful and very convincing. He appears to have injured his left hand in the middle of performance (cramp? Not sure) but soldiers through until the end. It could be distracting if you notice it, but that has nothing to do with his top notch singing. Kudos to his professionalism. I found the costume to be a bit silly, personally, but it's not a big deal either way.

Hartmann was very good as Tamino. He seemed a bit tight and nervous in the beginning but loosens up later. I can't find any fault in his performance.

They chose to present Monostatos as a cartoony villan with excessive makeup. I prefer productions that give more sympathetic version of him. His aria was good but I wonder if the need to present him negatively affected the performance negatively; I've heard his aria rendered more beautifully.

As for the overall production, it followed the traditional reading of putting Sarasato in a entirely positive light while putting the Queen in the entirely negative one. I personally prefer productions that are more sympathetic to the Queen. I am not quite sure what they were trying to do with modern clothing/classical customes in this show. Certain characters are dressed in 1950's contemprary clothing, while main characters are dressed classically. They push this hard with Papagena in particular. It is not too distracting but I did not feel it added much either.

Overall, the production is well thought-out with little overt flaws. Singers are all good, with Damrau being excellent and Pamina being a bit weak. A great, but not perfect, production.

This 50-minute program only shows kids training at the acrobatic school. There are hardly any shots of an actual performance, so you never get to see the results of all their hard work. Also, the Product Description is wrong. The disc is not about the Heilongjiang Acrobatic Troupe. It's about the Wuqiao School of Acrobatic Arts. And there is noting at all about ice skating. Most of the footage is about trying to form human pyramids. A huge disappointment.

#@: Alice 2009 Miniseries Blu ray

I like to think of myself as an "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass" adaptation connoisseur. I'm not sure why, since I haven't been a die hard fan until recently.

That being said, I also have a pretty low opinion of SyFy original movies. Mega Shark, anyone?

Last weekend, a friend turned me on to this movie/miniseries, and I have to say... this might be the best Alice adaptation EVER. I saw the Tim Burton version last weekend too, and while I *adored* Johnny Depp's Hatter and Stephen Fry's Cheshire Cat, you just can't beat Andrew Lee Potts, and I didn't want to rewatch the ending to Burton's about ten times (ok, so I only watched it four times... same dif ~_^).

Basically, "Alice" is a fairy tale for adults. It's a version of the story in which Wonderland is real, and the heroine is familiar with the story books about it. If you're looking for the old story, you're going to be very confused when you run into bottled emotions, Alice's mysterious father, a not-so-mad Hatter, and a March Hare Assassin.

If you're looking for a mildly actiony, suspensefully romantic story about a lost (but basically self-sufficient) girl who meets the man of her dreams and fights an army of casino-running human traffickers, this is the movie for you!

Forget all those other SyFy movies and think of Tin Man! That was awesome, right? This is awesome too!!

Skip the Disney cartoon and the '99 TV miniseries... Watch Burton's reimagining, but take this one home on DVD. You definitely won't regret it.
