#$ Tears of the Sun Blu ray

This is only the second movie I've ever walked out on. After 40 minutes.

Sorry, I have a childhood friend who is a currently serving SEAL, and this movie made me physically ill.

If you're looking for a liberal-oriented, we-need-to-hug-and-save-everyone film, if you're looking for a film set in Fairyland, then this film is for you.

If you have any knowledge whatsoever of military operations or history, if you believe in pragmatic reality, if you have any respect for the men who wear the Trident, DO NOT WATCH THIS HORRIBLE, STEAMING PILE DOG PILE.

        $ L.A. Confidential Blu ray

L.A. Confidential has everything, 1950's setting in Los Angeles, the L.A. Police Department, beautiful mysterious movie look-alikes, a quirky dirt magazine reporter, smart quick dialogue, perfect ensemble, and unexpected traps in every corner.

Director Curtis Hanson does a fantastic job showing the two-faces of Los Angeles. His view of the city and the perfect tone of the dark, exciting story grab you at the start. The city of dreams is caught as well as the dark side. The beginning is narrated by Danny DeVito who elaborates on L.A. glamour, sun and fun, ritzy homes and Hollywood celebrities and hopefuls. Danny plays a reporter for "Hush-Hush" magazine so he also shows the duplicity of L.A. with its high-class hookers, murders, and corrupt cops.

L.A. Confidential shows how hard it is to know who you can trust, who is watching your back or the criminals. There are three detectives (Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Kevin Spacey) who are smart and clever in their own unique ways. They are investigating a coffee-shop mass murder and as each thread of evidence unravels, they discover more and more corruption in the Police Department.

The three detectives use their own unique personalities and tactics to delve into the investigation of a mass murder at a small coffee shop. The tenor and quality of the movie holds up throughout. The pacing is quick and the viewer needs to give each scene total attention as the threads of evidence and relationships are tightly and well woven.

Kim Basinger is fantastic as the Veronica Lake look-alike prostitute. She knows how to deliver and it gives the film a integrity that is hard to replicate.

All the actors do a top notch job - Basinger, Crowe, Cromwell, DeVito, Strathairn, Spacey, Crowe and Pearce.

A standing ovation for the perfect screen version masterpiece mystery!

        $*$ Scoop Blu ray

"Scoop" is a mystery/comedy/romance written and directed by Woody Allen and released in 2006. Scarlett Johansson stars as Sondra Pransky, a geeky college journalist vacationing in England. She gets a tip from the ghost of a dead newsman (Ian McShane) on the identity of a local serial killer and proceeds to team up with bumbling magician Sid Waterman (Woody Allen); the tip leads them to the rich son of a prominent lord, Peter Lyman (Hugh Jackman), with whom Sondra unintentionally starts to fall in love. Is Lyman the murderer or isn't he?

Although fantastical and somewhat goofy, "Scoop" is first and foremost a mystery and I did enjoy trying to figure out if Peter Lyman is the "Tarot Card killer." In the story we perceive Peter Lyman largely through the lens of Sondra, who is falling in love with the guy; hence, the viewer warms up to him and doesn't want him to be a notorious killer.

"Scoop" is a comedy but not in the laugh-out-loud sense of, say, "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective"; it's mildly amusing, witty and fun but not laugh-out-loud funny, so if you're looking for the latter don't bother.

The three stars and their chemistry are a highlight. I enjoyed the team-up of Woody (Sid) & Scarlett (Sondra) and their surrogate father/daughter relationship. I knew when I saw "The Horse Whisperer" that Scarlett would grow up to be one of cinema's leading beauties, and so she is! Scarlett was 21 while filming "Scoop" and plays against type; and she does it quite well. The film is worth catching solely for her, just don't expect any raunch or t&a exploitation (although she does have a one-piece bathing suit scene and a nightie scene, which are both rather modest).

Hugh Jackman is a great modern masculine actor, of course, and he does fine here, although I couldn't help wondering if long metal claws would suddenly shoot out of his knuckles!

The London and English countryside locations are nice eyecandy.

        The runtime is 96 minutes.

BOTTOM LINE: This is my first Woody Allen film so I'm not familiar with his répertoire and therefore can't compare "Scoop" with his other movies. With this in mind, "Scoop" may not be great or even really good, it is an enjoyable mystery/comedy highlighted by a good cast and locations. "Scoop" doesn't aspire or claim to be anything more and, on that level, I liked it. I enjoyed the characters, their story, the creative zany elements (e.g. crossing the River Styx with the Grim Reaper) and the mounting mystery.

The receipient said the movie disk was fine and it was not a problem to him. I was still embarrased. Will be hesitant to order a movie from Amazon again. #@: Stravinsky and the Ballets Russes The Firebird Le Sacre du Printemps Blu ray

I've always wanted to see the Firebird after having listened to the music in 8th grade and only having the music instructor describe what it was about (OK, I'm an antique and this was before the days of videotape in school). Anyway, this is a beautifully staged and danced production of the Firebird. The costumes are lovely. I was surprised by how short it was at less than 45 minutes; I seemed to remember the music as being longer in school.

The second ballet is far more modern and not really my taste. Had I not read the jacket, I wouldn't have known what it was about. It is supposed to be based on a classic Russian dance, pre-Christian era. It reminded me more of Hollywood's early idea of Native American dances; even the costumes seemed to lean slightly that way. If you are expecting a classical ballet, all this jumping around pigeon-toed will disappoint. This ballet is mercifully short. Spoiler alert: the bears carry off the virgin in the end. That is the entire plot.

Fortunately this production avoided any temptation to "modernise" the opera, something which some feel is necessary to bring productions into the 21st century. The costumes are timeless so one can concentrate on the singing, which is unifirmly excellent. Staging is minimal and in no way distracts from the musical message. My only reservations concern the ballet which, although the movements are appropriate to the music, comes across more as a demonstration of gymnastics than an artistic addition to the production. More appropriate costuming would have minimised this perception. This is one of the shortest Blu Ray operas in my collection at little over an hour, but is a quality production so worth the cost.

The video on this Blu Ray is absolutely stunning as is the audio.

I'm no movie buff, but I loved this movie! The 2nd one though, well that's another story. The blu-ray features weren't any more amazing than the DVD, and wasn't anymore clearer. It was a lot sharper and crisp, but a DVD version would have been more than enough for a type of movie like this. But for the price of the blu-ray I couldn't refuse.

                        !$ Beowulf Blu ray

When I was but a callow freshman my mother, an archetypal Danish monster*, meaning well, made me sign up for a Mediaeval English Literature class. At the time this aggrieved me, but despite myself I enjoyed it immensely, and especially the really old bits - derived from Icelandic and Old High German, prominent among them Snorri Sturluson's sagas in which people ritually burn each other and the anonymous Danish legend Beowulf. It's a great story, even in its original old English (which considerably pre-Chaucer, so tough if you have trouble navigating the vowel shift), and - being the archetypal "confronting the Monster" story - ideal fodder, you would think, for a cinematic treatment.

And in recent times, it has had more than its fair share. Derek Jacobi and Ralph Fiennes have narrated a 30 minute animated version; Gerard Butler and a bunch of Canadians endured gales and abysmal weather in Iceland to make an earnest and frugal but, in truth, not especially imaginative version in 2005. And there's this one.

Well, you certainly couldn't mark this one down for not being imaginative. First the positives: the cast, as announced, is astounding, numbering amongst them Anthony Hopkins (Hrothgar), Ray Winstone (Beowulf), John Malkovich (some other guy) and Angelina Jolie as Grendel's Mother. Yes: you read that right: Brad Pitt's wife (as she then was) plays one of the most famous monsters in the history of literature. Short of a Charlize Theron turn as an Eileen Wurnos type character, that has to be one of the most extraordinary pieces of miscasting since they put Keanu Reeves in Much Ado About Nothing.

Unless, of course, the film-makers have been so imaginative that they've completely re-imagined the part of Grendel's mother. I hope it won't be considered poor sport of me to let on that they have.

And the script is witty and the screenplay and staging - while frequently indulging in 3D effects for the hell of it, as 3D movies tend to do - is impressive. Grendel (junior) is well rendered and achieves surprising empathy for an entirely digital performance. I think he also speaks in Old High German, and is portrayed not as merriment-resenting curmudgeon (as in the original) but as having a very nasty ear infection!

Now the negatives. Beowulf is designed as an onscreen rendering of a graphic novel (in old fashioned lingo, a comic), so do not come to this expecting a faithful or reverent iteration of the film. The plot has been significantly revised, although for the most part thoughtfully and cleverly, albeit conducted at breakneck speed, and with lashings of gore. Then again, it would be difficult to depict as much dismembering the story requires (even in its original state) without a fair bit of splatter.

But the biggest thing to note is that (being produced by the Polar Express team) Beowulf is entirely digital - not just acted in front of blue screens, but fully animated, like Shrek; the actors have been completely re-rendered. In some cases this works well (Hrothgar): I dare say portly cockney geezer Ray Winstone was absolutely chuffed to be presented as a 6 foot 5 inches of rippling Geatish hunk; but the remainder of the characters do have an unfortunate Shrek-ish sort of bearing and their movements aren't especially convincing (particularly the horses, which all look rather stumpy and ponyish). Ultimately I found this immensely distracting to the point where it spoiled what otherwise would have been a tremendous film.

There's a place for the technical wizardry, as Peter Jackson has ably demonstrated; but when it becomes the principal point of the film something is bound to have been lost.

                            @# Creepshow Blu ray

I remember the day "Creepshow" opened in 1982. I raced to the theater to see a film directed by George Romero (Night of the Living Dead (Millennium Edition)) and written by Stephen King (The Shining). To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. Watching it again after many years, I now respect the film for its attempts, a comedic, gross-out horror celebration possessing the adolescent spirit of a live comic book, even if most of the segments are average at best.

Frankly, I still struggle with the comedy, though am aware this is a nostalgic tribute to those fiendishly clever The EC Archives: Tales From The Crypt Volume 1 (v. 1) comic books of the 1950s. Camp is never easy to create on the screen, and it requires good acting. Oddly, "Creepshow" has an impressive cast and even they struggle with the shaky material. The film is separated into six wildly uneven stories, with two being good, the rest average or poor. It opens with a clumsy frame detailing an abusive, beer-swilling father (Tom Atkins) berating his son for reading comic book trash. It's an unimaginative, mostly disturbing segment due to the portrayal of an uncaring mother who could care less her son is apparently slapped on a regular basis. This segue-ways into the stories, starting with "Father's Day," a slow-moving exercise noteworthy for being the lone example in film history where (a young) Ed Harris gives a poor performance. But you have to love his awkward attempt at disco dancing.

Stephen King's acting debut follows in "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill" as a Max Baer hillbilly who makes the mistake of poking a meteor. It's easily the worst vignette, compounded by King's flamboyantly bad portrayal. This segment is so supremely awful, it practically destroys the entire film. "Creepshow" rebounds with the following two segments "Something To Tide You Over" and "The Crate," eerie exercises aided immeasurably by the fine acting of Ted Danson, Leslie Neilsen, Hal Holbrook and Fritz Weaver. These episodes are clever, if a bit shallow, but Weaver's freak-out after viewing what's inside the dusty crate is memorable.

The film closes on another mediocre note "They're Creeping Up On You," with E.G. Marshall as a Howard Hughes-type battling a growing tide of cockroaches. My guess is in post-production Romero and King uncomfortably realized they were stuck with three bad vignettes and two passable ones (leaving out the frame here), thus confronting the great curse of anthology films. If you open with three bad stories, viewers lose interest in a marathon march of mediocrity. So the equation becomes two bad stories, followed by two good, closing with the lessor of the bad (leaving out the frame here). You can't fault the uneven quality of "Creepshow" too much as even one of the best horror anthologies in history Trilogy of Terror, penned by Richard Matheson, sandwiched a weak story in the middle.

What's interesting is that "Creepshow" is far inferior to its lessor budgeted sequel Creepshow 2, released in 1987. Every vignette in that film was strong, and the closing episode, "The Hitchhiker," is easily the best story of both films combined. "Creepshow" is an average exercise, a disappointment considering the talents involved. The best that can be said is it's superior to Twilight Zone - The Movie. Perhaps these storied directors with blank checks should have watched 1972's Tales From the Crypt (1972) [VHS]?

                              • In Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, a breezy take on writer-director Shane Black's trademark buddy action/comedy oeuvre, a petty thief (Robert Downey Jr.) is brought to Los Angeles for an unlikely audition and finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation, along with his high school dream girl (Michelle Monaghan) and a detective (Val Kilmer) who has been training him for his upcoming role.Running Tim

                              -- Galaxy Quest Blu ray

Disclosure: I am a Trekkie. Dyed-in-the-wool, through and through. So I approach this film from that perspective.

                              The movie:

"Galaxy Quest" does the impossible - it makes me enjoy something with Tim Allen in it. I place this movie in that rarefied category of "spoof movies that are equally entertaining as spoofs and as stand-alones." By this, I mean that you could never have watched an episode of Star Trek (shame on you!) and still enjoy this as a science fiction movie. Other films in this category include "Hot Fuzz" (Buddy Cop pics) and "Shaun of the Dead" (Zombie flicks). We are given a plot revolving around the cast of a Star Trek-like show, a few decades after their run on TV. They are stuck in a dreary cycle of conventions and appearances cashing in on their previous fame. Then, something strange happens: real aliens approach them, asking them for their help in an interstellar war.

What is especially surprising is how emotional this movie made me. I think its loving depiction of fan devotion, mixed with the somewhat sad portrayal of middle-aged actors who are bitter over typecasting, really hit home for me. The happy ending was made all the more affecting. I was pretty much ready to check my brain and critical eye at the door by the time this movie was finished, however formulaic the resolution might be, objectively speaking.

The cast is very good and the humor is dead-on target. Allen is perfectly cast as a self-important blowhard with an undercurrent of insecurity. Sigourney Weaver is also a standout, demonstrating fine comic timing. The alien characters are charming and quirky. The effects are also surprisingly good, equal to some of the later Star Trek films!

                              The Blu-Ray:

The 1080p image presented on this disc is a definite uprade from the SD DVD, but it isn't exactly a "beat you over the head" HD image. It shows a bit of softness and a bit of Digital Noise Reduction (DNR). The movie was filmed in 1999, and this does look better than some images of that vintage ("Dark City" springs to mind as a DNR'ed mess from about the same year). It's just not a spectacular transfer, at the quality level of, say, 1999's "Fight Club." That said, the faces do not have the waxy look of the worst DNR, and certain shots show nice detail, especially in cloth. The effects shots also look very nice. The print is pretty clean, too. It's just somewhat evident that there was no major restoration work.

The soundtrack is a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 channel mix that does a fine job. Dialogue is never overpowered, and some of the battles and explosions contain booming bass and rear channel surround information. Most of the track is pretty front-loaded, however.

Extras include about an hour and 15 minutes worth of documentary features. The most interesting are a feature on the ILM effects (which were pretty good), as well as features on casting, production, and the like. Unfortunately, all the features are in SD. Only the included movie trailer is in HD. 12 minutes of deleted scenes round out the extras.

Bottom line: This is great family-friendly entertainment. At the inexpensive Blu-Ray price, if you don't own it, and you love either Star Trek or Sci-Fi in general, you really can't go wrong. It would have been nice to have had a fancier set and a slightly better transfer, but even with its SD features, this is better than most bare-bones releases of "less successful" movies.

I see this as a "love letter" of sorts to both Trekkies and the Trek cast and crew. I enjoy watching this more than the new Trek movie, for what it's worth. If you haven't seen it, you really should!
