$*$ Ping Pong Playa Blu ray

"Ping Pong Playa" is a hilarious comedy about a Chinese-American 20-something slacker named Chris "C-Dub" Wong who dreams of being a pro basketball player. After losing his minimum wage job at the mall and causing a car accident in which both his mother and older (and very successful) brother are injured, his parents guilt him into teaching a ping pong class at the Chinese community center. In between winning money from his much younger students at ping pong and losing money to adults at basketball, Wong begins training to take his brother's place at the local ping pong tournament.



This movie is entertaining for all audiences, but many of the jokes may be lost on those not familiar with Chinese culture and the Mandarin Chinese language. The movie is in English, but Mandarin is spoken occasionally both by Wong's family and his best friend, an African-American who studies Chinese at the community center.

I ordered Pride&Prejudice DVD. The faces were white and the colors looked faded. I returned and requested a replacement. Unfortunately the replacement was the same and I returned.



I took out a copy from the library and the same condition exists. I have concluded that the company that converted Pride&Prejudice from VHS did not have the expertise to accomplish a TRUE copy.



I have always had excellent service and do not fault for this purchase. Obviously it is the fault of the distributor.

I always like it when a movie exceeds my expectations. Crossing Over was a lot better than I thought it would be. I don't remember this movie in the theaters so it kind-of slipped under the radar. The plot was good and the A-list actors did a great job.



Ashley Judd's plastic surgery was a bit disturbing because one eyebrow is about 1/2" higher than the other one. She needs to get that fixed. It's creepy...



Alice Eve was quite stunning and her part was believable and well played.

Ummm, I've never seen King Arthur, but I love those other 2 movies and I would have been fine to not see this one. I'm a total Matt Damon fan and while I wanted to see this back when it came out, it was because I thought the trailer looked really interesting. Sadly, the trailer showed all the good parts, even when they weren't too great. The trailer made the movie seem exciting, even though it wasn't.



The movie was borderline comical, so unless thats what they meant...but I thought it was supposed to be kinda suspenseful. The props and costumes were ridiculous. Unlike.

I wouldn't recommend this as a first Rheingold, nor a second, nor a third. This is for people who have seen a number of more traditional Rheingolds over the years and yearn for something new.



Positives are the rhine maidens doing underwater aquatics in the first act. Quite visual and sexy. Not bad singing either. Also, stunning graphics projected on the rear screen giving a very sci-fi futuristic feeling to the backgrounds.



Placing principals in giant robots is more problematic. Gives visual interest to what otherwise might be static scenes, but hampers action. Principals do not move at all, just stage hands moving the robots. The giants cannot grab hold of Freia except in a very clumsy way. When Fafner kills Fasolt it is done with a crude bump from one robot to another. Not very convincing. When Alberich "changes" into a dragon or a frog, there is no attempt to make it appear as though it is actually happening on stage. When Alberich is captured, tied up, then later released, it really doesn't happen at all. He just stands there, unfettered, singing about being captured.



The orchestra under Zubin Mehta creates glorious sound, but in a rather stilted way, slowing down for robot action, stopping to await the raising or lowering of a platform.



The best part of the disc, really, is the travelogue of Valencia and the magnificent, futuristic Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia. It was a delight to watch the free, outside venue where thousands of spectators observe La Fura dels Baus's street-theatre-trained actor-acrobats providing props and background for the action.

This is a worthy purchase for any opera fan because of the overall quality of the production: both in the music and the stage direction. It is essential, though, for Mozart fans and, in particular, fans of Abduction because it significantly adds to our cultural understanding of the opera. It is the first production I have seen that doesn't treat Abduction like a farce. The scenery changes dramatically over the course of the opera as we begin to realize that we are not looking at a clash between European and "Turkish" cultures, but an internal struggle between opposing forces in European culture. By the end of the opera, the last of the "Turkish" scenery has toppled over, and we see men and women in modern European clothing on a black stage. It's a very moving production that, to understand fully, requires some knowledge of the reasons Mozart's rescue opera is problematic. In any case, Mojca Erdmann is smoking hot in this production. She alone makes this worth at least renting on Netflix.

Ed and Al are finally back in glorious animation for fans to drool over. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood follows plot of the manga almost completely, whereas the first anime series strays off to a completely different story. Brotherhood starts out with Ed and Al pursuing the notorious "Ice Alchemist" who has a vendetta against the Fuhrer President Bradley. This pops the series off with some interesting fight scenes, but unfortunetly after that the series is somewhat dull. There's nothing new to people who saw the first series (up until you see Greed and his Chimeras in the Devils Nest)and silly humour seems to be put in places where the tone probably should be a little more serious. You can find the same humour in the comics, but it didnt seem to translate into the anime too well. If you are willing to be patient and endure the anime-ish slapstick, after episode 14 or so the series gets interesting. It introduces A prince from Xing, who just happens to be looking for -you guessed it- a philosophers stone. Things soon take off and fight sequences ensue-

Which is a good thing, because the series was void of any action up to that point, and the soap opera theme starts getting old.



Bottom line is that this series will be sure to please many of the fans of the first series. Those fans who were drawn to the original due to its dark and edgy themes may be dissapointed. If you are new to the world of FMA, then this series may not be the best to start with because it speeds through much of the beggining and could be confusing at times. And so I'll give it a 3/5.

I love "Company". I saw the original production eleven times on Broadway and each performance was as exciting as the one before it. So I was very excited when I saw this DVD. Of course I knew it would be different from the original, but just how different? Well this is a very tame version of the show-sort of a G rated version of an original R rating. All of the bite, sarcasm and yes the New York wit and feel of the show have been removed.The performances are good enough, but no one ever seems to really sink their teeth into the roles. I would recommend it to someone who has never seen the show but anyone who is hoping for anything near the caliber of the original should skip it. Oh why didn't we tape shows in the 70's?
