This is a fantastic deal on these two Bluray discs. You'll save a bundle (currently about $15 as of 1-24-09) compared to buying them individually.

I'm not going to review the movies themselves; however, I will tell you that as of today (1-24-09), Amazon's technical details for this two-pack are incorrect. The aspect ratio is incorrectly listed as 1.33:1. Those of us geeky enough to care about aspect ratios know that Blu-ray does not release 1.33:1 (or "pan-and-scan") movies, unless this was their original release format. Luckily both of these movies are presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. This is truly a double-pack of each individual Blu-ray movie.

If you're interested in the extras or the visual aspects of the Blu-ray editions, go ahead and check out the individual reviews for each disc. I just wanted to clarify what this double-pack is...as Amazon's poor description led me to purchase it only when I found it at a local brick & mortar (to double check it).

      -- Eastern Promises Blu ray

I watched these films one right after the other ("Promises", first). As they're thematically almost identical, and have the same male lead, it made sense to write a single review covering both. (The "Promises" section is at the end, if you're in a hurry.)

In "History", I'm not giving away any great secret when I reveal that Tom Stall really is a gangster trying to escape his past and lead a decent life. He's "outed" when obliged to kill the men robbing his diner, and the TV stories of his heroism come to the attention of those he thought would never be able to locate him. The rest of the film is basically a revenge tale in which Stall is obliged to kill every last one of them, including his brother (an almost-unrecognizable William Hurt, in a performance that sidesteps most of the "standard-gangster" clichés).

The problem is that there's not much else to the story. It's little more than a revenge tale that has no moral force, because Stall truly needs to protect himself and his family. There is no drama without choice. (Roger Ebert's argument that had Joey /truly/ become Tom, he would have died in the diner robbery, is absurd. Tom throws hot coffee at one of the robbers, which /any/ desperate person would have done if they were worried about the lives of those around them. Tom is virtually certain that the younger of the robbers /will/ kill one of his employees, even before he hands over the cash register's contents. This renders pointless any ambiguity about "who" Tom really is -- if you know you're going to die, you'll take any chance.)

Despite Cronenberg's averral that he wants the audience to identify with Stall's killings (rather than be revulsed by them), so that we have to consider their morality, the /fact/ is that Stall's need to violently defend himself is at least /legally/ justifiable, and the audience is completely on the side of a genuinely reformed gangster from the start. I greatly enjoyed the vicarious pleasure of seeing him off every one of his enemies, and most viewers are likely to cheer rather than turn away.

Another problem with "History" is the way Stall's wife is so quick to reject him when she learns the truth. We see, in an early sex scene, how much they genuinely care for each other, but even Tom's post-revelation rape (yes), which she thoroughly enjoys, is not enough to bring her to her senses. If Cronenberg is making the trite observation that we never /really/ know the people we live with, it would have been more effective if Stall's wife, though understandably frightened and anguished, were also at least /somewhat/ ambivalent about the situation. How can a woman who says "You're the best man I've ever known" be so quick to think the man she's spent almost 20 years with is a monster in disguise? But, no, she firmly rejects him until the final scene (which Cronenberg directs with beautiful restraint). I would have kicked her out and found a more-loyal mate.

There's no restraint in Cronenberg's continuing love for explicit gore. In both films people are brutally killed, and Cronenberg doesn't hesitate to show us -- in close-up -- such things as a slit throat pumping blood, or the nearly blown-off jaw of a still-living person. (If you think this is bad, take a look at the deleted scenes from "The Fly", some of which would likely have gotten that film an X rating.)

If "A History of Violence" is about character, rather than plot (as Roger Ebert suggests it is), you coulda fooled /me/. Its ending is largely determined by its beginning, and that is not the substance of character-driven stories. There is one genuinely clever and witty scene in which Stall's son, Jack, verbally humiliates the school bully. But Jack is later obliged to beat up the guy, and Stall is worried about being sued by the kid's parents (!!!).

"Eastern Promises" is about Russian gangsters in London. It, too, is a revenge story, but one of more complexity and subtlety. It has an audience-pleasing twist ending that is at least plausible, if not wholly likely.

Morton Vigoro -- I mean, Viggo Mortensen -- is a Russian criminal (Nikolai) who's the "driver" for a Russian gangster (Semyon -- Armand Mueller-Stahl) who runs a fine restaurant. Nikolai's tattoos reveal his criminal life; without these tattoos, he wouldn't be trusted, or for that matter, even be considered a criminal at all. When Semyon has had enough of his feckless son Kirill (Vincent Cassell), he agrees to have the kid offed, with Nikolai moving into Kirill's position -- which is what Nikolai has wanted all along. More I cannot say -- other than to be patient with the first few minutes of the film, which at first seem incomprehensible.

Unlike "History", "Promises" /is/ about character, and we're not sure how we're supposed to take Nikolai -- he seems to be a villain with just the faintest trace of a conscience. Kirill is particularly interesting, as his homophobia clearly covers his own sexual confusion. He's obviously in love with Nikolai. Nikolai's feelings about Kirill are not so clear. Is he just using Kirill -- or is he also attracted to him?

"Eastern Promises" is a legitimate drama, and if you can get past Cronenberg's horrifying neck slashings, you'll probably enjoy it.

            $ The Gauntlet Blu ray

I usually don't comment on movies, but this one is especially noteworthy for Eastwood fans. For a movie that was shot in 1977, the Blu-ray -picture- transfer on this movie is excellent. Since there was no such thing as DTS Master Audio in 1977, or even digital audio for that matter, the sound quality is therefore mediocre at best but it's still watchable. Unless it's under $10 bucks, I generally never buy Blu-ray movies that were not originally shot on HD equipment. These old transfers are kind of like handing a mechanic a blow torch and telling them to turn an old Volkswagen into a Ferrari, and then call it a Ferrari after they're done. Anything pre 2006 will never be a true 100% Blu-ray quality movie. But if you like The Gauntlet, it's worth buying this Blu-ray version in my opinion.

#*# Escaflowne The Movie Blu ray

The series that this movie belongs to is actuially one of my favorite shows ever. This movie is a re-telling of the series, not a continuation. They took the themes and arcatypical characters, and threw them into a more primal world. Sadly this lacks the depth of the series, which kinda ruins it for me, but the movie does have some good points. The soundtrack is absolutely stunning. I bought the version with the sound track included because it was cheaper than paying the $40-50 for the music alone. In fact, the soundtrack is really the only reason I got the movie. The video itself is beautiful, and will be perfect for the blue ray release coming out in spite of it not being a newer movie. The English cast is much better than the series, but still rather rough (more on the side of the scripting than the actors themselves; perfect example is that of the "are you the wing goddess?" followed by someone saying "YOU ARE THE WING GODDESS" and poor hitomi crying "I dont know!").

Sadly I will probably only watch this show once more when it comes out on blue-ray to see the visuals, because the story (while a good idea) is actually that bad. I mean, you cant watch it before you watch the series as the old/cheap animation of the series will bother you after watching the movie. But at the same time you cannot watch the movie after the series because it ruins the characters, the story, and the general romantic wonder that is Escaflowne. But buy it for the soundtrack, it is worth it.

This movie is just another example of hollywood industry's vilification and demonization of Muslims as a race, as a community. $*$ Flyboys Blu ray

I think people rag on this movie a little too much. If it's not as good as the reigning classic of World War One dogfight films, 1966's The Blue Max, then at least it was a notch above most of what sat beside it in the multiplex in the fortnight it was out. (How many reviewers, seeking originality, headlined their write-ups "Bombs Away"? More than a few.) Movies about the First World War are almost nonexistent today and I salute the courage it took to go out on a limb to tell a forgotten story.

All that said, yes, the technical inaccuracies, which I won't list here, did irk sensibilities a time or ten, and one couldn't help but feel the plot was something that got in the way of the special effects, which were often little short of spectacular, but the funny thing is I've found that the very points which instigated the greatest number of complaints about this film turned out to be those things which actually were based on the historical reality of the Escadrille de Lafayette, its experiences and its members. Go figure.

Flyboys isn't going to be a classic but what is? I personally think we're residing in the age of the anti-classic. Flyboys is watchable, has some good parts, and means well even when it comes up short. I admire the effort to produce this kind of low-appeal movie in the age of "a blockbuster or else" film making and am glad I own this title.

Really the only thing that anyone needs to now about Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, is that it's a Troma release. I think that statement in itself says everything you really need to know here. That being said, I think Lloyd Kaufman really outdid himself with this one.

Chickens, buckets of gore, shots at every race, creed, and culture, this one has got it all! Not that it's anything new for Troma, but in these times we live in, it was particularly refreshing to see something as non-politically correct as Poultrygeist. The only thing that bogged the movie down was the musical numbers, which still would have been very stupid even if the actors COULD sing. Thankfully the musical aspect subsided in the second half and things got back on track.

Classic Troma, classic crud! Any Troma, gore lovers, and z-movie fanatics should have a field day with Poultrygeist, check it out!

-- Equator Reefs of Riches Blu ray

This movie was a wonderful overview about reefs and sea life that lives around reef habitats. The quality of the scenes was amazing, especially in high definition. Not only was the scenery beautiful but the lessons given on many of the different life forms was fascinating and very informative. I kept thinking about how great the documentary would have been with a class once taken in marine biology several years ago. The material presented was both accurate and very engaging. Students that wish to learn about marine life or marine biology could learn quite a bit with this video. Highly recommended for anyone interested in reef ecosystems or marine life in general.

The general idea is really brillant and Rick Gervais could have pulled it off had the script been tighter and the idea development been stronger. The jokes that were to be had were really pretty much covered in the trailer; everything else was just kind of an extension of those. Even the whole foray into religion seemed to be 45 minutes dedicated to a joke that could last about 10.

Also, about 30 minutes of the movie deals with finding a partner with the right genetic code (as opposed to the one your in love with, i.e. makes you happy). This seemed out of left field in a movie which showcases how venal people really are when they stop lying.

                            ***1/2

A generally sweet and unassuming little romantic comedy, "Management" pits a socially-backward, good-natured doofus (Steve Zahn ) against a near-psychotic super-stud (Woody Harrelson) for the attention and affections of a seemingly unattainable dream girl, played by Jennifer Aniston.

Mike and Sue meet one night when Sue, a salesperson from Baltimore, stays at the motel Mike's parents own and operate - and where Mike works as handyman and general Mr. Fixit - in the Desert Southwest. Despite the stark personal and socioeconomic differences between them, Mike becomes so infatuated with Sue that he pursues her, first to Maryland, then to her boyfriend, Jongo's, home in Washington State.

"Management" is an uneven, though frequently endearing, minor-league romance that skates by on the likeability and charm of its three lead performers. It doesn't always get the tone right, occasionally going too broad for its laughs, as when Mike, desperate to get back in touch with Sue, jumps out of an airplane and straight into Jongo's swimming pool. Still, when it's being low-keyed and tender and sticks to the rudiments of offbeat romance, the movie modestly and unassumingly works its way into our hearts - even if it defies credibility a good deal of the time.
