Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine - Evolution

Customer Review: Lot of music for the money!
Gloria arrived on the music video scene in the mid eighties. You will see some videos from that era. What was played on MTV or VH1 was that `cat video,' "Bad Boys". Even way back then, the cat costumes and makeup are very well-done. "Dr. Beat" is a goofy, conglomeration of people in a hospital setting. There are some concert stage videos "Betcha Say That" and "Words Get In the Way." Early music videos required color and dance to attract the attention of viewers and "Rhythm is Gonna Get You" fits that category as well as "Conga" and "Get On Your Feet", and "1-2-3." A superb balladeer with a sultry voice, you will see videos "Can't Stay Away from You." Although I am not a "Gloria fan", this collection is good because it is strictly music, no interview, no extra non-music footage. I like a collection with JUST MUSIC! For the people who love Gloria, you will see the English and Spanish versions "Oye Mi Canto" "Don't Wanna Lose You", and "Anything for You" and "Here We Are." If you are new to Gloria or love Gloria's music, this a great collection. It will introduce you to her evolution in music....Mzrizz
Customer Review: A must have for any Gloria fan or pop fan.
Very good collection of her early hits with Miami Sound Machine. It covers her songs from 1984(Dr. Beat) to 1989(Here We Are). My favorite Estefan song is on this video,(Can't Stay Away From You).

Ibiza has always held the reputation of being THE place for clubbers to descend on in the summer seasons. Between the months of May and September, Ibiza (the smallest Baelaric island) is transformed from quiet resort into the clubber's paradise the name is synonymous with. In recent years, there have been suggestions that the island is losing its reputation as the clubbing 'Mecca', but thankfully a recent poll of top DJs really puts this to bed. The world's biggest DJs voted on their top 50 clubs to perform at and Ibiza clubbing has a far better representation than such a small island should have! In terms of quality club density, it would be pretty hard to beat the island, with 5 Ibiza clubs in the top 50 and with 4 of those featured in the top 10!
From these results, it should be pretty easy for me to list the DJ's top 5 clubs in Ibiza, so without further ado, here it is in reverse order:

5. Privelege (36th in the world)

According to the Guinness Book of Records, Privelege is not just the biggest club in Ibiza, but also the world. This will come as no surprise to people who have visited the breathtaking venue. Spectacular light effects are made all the more impressive by the 25 metre ceiling, and it even houses a huge swimming pool. The real beauty of this Ibiza club is that due to its size, the venue changes every night - the dcor is different to fit the club night, making for a slightly disorienting experience for those with a hazy memory of the night before! As with other top Ibiza clubs, tourists can expect to share a dance floor with some big names - in the past, Privilege has been patronised by Madonna, Jean-Paul Gautier, Puff Daddy and Jade Jagger...

4. Amnesia (8th in the world)

Founded in 1976, Amnesia is viewed as legendary by the Ibiza clubbing scene. Although it is no longer open air, the venue has made the loss acceptable by replacing the freedom with volume! If Privelege was all about the building itself, Amnesia is all about the sound system and the effect it has. Cocoon's techno Mondays provide sonic innovation aplenty, while Cream's Ibiza music is legendary. Residency is provided by the aforementioned Cream, Made in Italy and Armin Van Buuren.

3. DC10 (7th in the world)

In terms of dcor, this is striking if not particularly aesthetically appealing - DC10 is a converted airport hanger (the club contains giant inflatable aeroplanes in homage to this heritage), which creates an amazing atmosphere with interesting acoustics. And because of its size, the Ibiza club can hold a massive 1500 revellers each night creating an atmosphere that's unforgettable - it's unsurprising the DJs in the poll valued it so much. The resident DJs are Jo Mills, CLoco Dice and Cirillo.

2. Pacha (3rd in the world)

Although Pacha is the name for a chain of nightclubs across Europe, it is the Ibiza club that has become synonymous with the brand. Opened in 1973, the club is one of the most famous on the island and has a capacity of 3,500 - which is just as well as the nights like 'Pure Pacha' really test the capacity, with top DJs such as Pete Tong hosting proceedings during the peak summer months. House music is the type most associated with the famous Ibiza club, but it actually has five separate rooms with distinctive musical stylings. One final aspect worth noting is that Pacha is the only club to stays open during the winter season, which is well worth remembering if you're trying to save some cash with a cheap holiday to Ibiza in winter.

1. Space (1st in the world)

It's hardly surprising that Space is regarded as the world's best night club. Ibiza's favourite has won all kinds of awards - as well as the accolade voted by the DJs this year, the nightclub was awarded the 'best club in the world' award at the 2001 Dancestar awards, and won 'best global club' at the International Dance Music Awards in 2005 and 2006. Space is most famous for pioneering its "We Love Sundays @ Space" events, which really test the endurance of clubbers. Ibiza's revellers will find the doors opening at 8am on Sunday morning, and closing again at 6am on Monday! The atmosphere is what makes the club great, and that in turn attracts top name DJs throughout the summer. The venue allows clubbing Ibiza tourists and residents to rave until the sun comes up on the outdoor terrace - which was moved (stone by stone) to the other side of the club to stop upsetting the neighbours!

With plenty of smaller, lesser known venues dotted around Ibiza, clubbing is set to be the focus of tourism to the island for some time to come. Certainly, you cannot call yourself a proper clubber until you've taken in a cheap Ibiza holiday.

Hey,

In this article I will be basically showing you the different types of guitar. This article is based at first time beginners.

There are two types of guitars and then two different styles of those two type of guitars. So we will start with the acoustic guitar. The acoustic guitar produces noise by the sound waves echoing through the hollow body. There are two style of acoustic guitar which are:

Nylon: A Nylon means that the strings are made out of nylon. The top strings may look like they are made out of steel, but in fact they are coated (with a special type of metal that I cant remember the name of) and are made of nylon in the inside. Nylon guitars are great for the classical sound and relaxation. Since these guitars are soft stringed I highly recommend them to any beginner as they help you get the gist of playing guitar.

Steel: A steel stringed acoustic guitar have strings that are made out of steel as you would have guessed. These guitars here are generally played either strumming or finger picking and can create a relaxation sound or a catchy beat. Many artists use the acoustic guitar like Jack Johnson and Pete Murray. These guitars can be hard to play for some people as it requires you to push the strings in pretty hard on the fretboard to make a clean sound. You can get acoustic electric guitars which are still a still stringed electric but have pickups inside the hollow body.

Now we get to the electric guitar. Electric guitars make there sound by the pickups located under the strings. The sound is "picked up" with these and sends the sound through a cord to an amplifier. This then amplifies the sound which can be changed by the different knobs located usually at the top of the amp. The two types of electric guitars are:

Solid Body: Solid body guitars are steel stringed guitars. These guitars are generally used in Metal, Rock, Blues and Pop Music. These guitars are great because if you turn the distortion up, it can sometimes hide your mistakes. It is better though to practice in a clean sound so that you get used to perfecting the notes and getting a good nice clear sound.

Hollow Body: These electric guitars also have steel strings. These are basically the same as a solid body but as the name suggests they are hollow. Sometimes they are only hollow by the f notes you see on the old fashion basses, Chellos ect. These guitars are generally used in Jazz and blues category.

Now strings. Guitar strings are wonderful because they come in many different types. If you are a beginner you should start off with low gauged strings so you can develop how to play the notes clean and well. Strings should be changed regularly because the oil on your fingers and other chemicals in the air damages the strings an can make the sound of your guitar not as good (bad phrasing).

Even if heavy metal is seen by many people as evil and destructive it is still very popular among young and old. It is pretty obvious that the thing teenagers today (and yesterday and tomorrow) are crazy about is music. Of all the musical genres the one with probably the most enthusiastic fans has to be heavy metal and all the hundreds of sub-categories, whether it is classic hard rock or grindcore.

Discordant heavy metal music struck a chord with many teenagers during the late '70s and '80s. The loud, fast, guitar-driven music has since languished commercially as successive generations have chosen newer soundtracks to fuel their rebellion against the establishment. Many of the original fans, however, never moved on, even as they aged, started careers, got married and had children of their own.

"If you're seeing a 40-year-old at a concert, you're quite sure at 18 you know what kind of music he was into. For so many people the music of the most emotional point of their lives is a touchstone that they return to for the rest of their lives, there keeping their own youth alive.
Heavy metal fans wear their passion on more than just the sleeves of skull T-shirts and black leather jackets. For many of them, the music--louder and faster than anything heard before--became a way of life. The mostly white, mostly male and mostly middle-class listeners found a feeling of power over their parents, over their teachers, over the jocks at school that treated them as outcasts.

Metalheads, or headbangers, as they called themselves, built up a community linked through underground tape swapping networks and conversations about Metallica lyrics while camping out on line for concert tickets.

A second wave of British and American rock bands became popular during the late 1960s to the 1970s, with groups that were more steeped in American blues music than their more pop-oriented predecessors. Bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Judas Priest, Status Quo, Aerosmith, Queen, Black Sabbath, and Uriah Heep played highly amplified, guitar-driven hard rock that would come to be known as heavy metal. Heavy metal languished into obscurity in the late 1970s. A few bands including Kiss, Queen, Black Sabbath,AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith maintained large followings and there were occasional mainstream hits such as Blue yster Cult's "(Don't Fear) the Reaper". Music critics overwhelmingly disliked the genre. This began to change in 1978 following the release of Van Halen's eponymous, self-titled debut album. The album helped to usher in an era of high-energy rock and roll, based out of Los Angeles, California.

One genre that was widely popular in the 1980s (c.1983) was glam metal. Taking influence from various artists such as Aerosmith, Guns N' Roses, Bon Jovi, Queen, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Twisted Sister, (all but Queen would eventually play glam metal at some point in the 80s), Sweet and the New York Dolls. The earliest glam metal bands to gain notability included: Mtley Cre, W.A.S.P. and Ratt. They became known for their debauched lifestyles, teased hair and use of make-up and clothing. Their songs were bombastic and often defiantly macho, with lyrics focused on sex, drinking, drugs, and the occult.

By the mid 1980s, a formula developed in which a glam metal band had two hits -- one a "power ballad" (slow-dance tempo, with soft verses and bombastic anthemic choruses), and the other a hard-rocking anthem. In 1987 a second wave of glam metal acts, sometimes referred to as sleaze rock, emerged including L.A. Guns and Faster Pussycat.

My name is John Tahan a webmaster , computer specialist and also a musician singer song writer, working on my new demo , I invite you all to check out my sites for all metal fans at: http://www.tzarrockmetal.com and have a listen at my 80's Rock metal album called "Players of the Game" and for everyone starting out at playing guitar I have created a small site called: http://www.guitarapprentice.com enjoy them

Now your Barbie and Ken dolls can perform and compete with pride as they showcase hand made ballroom dance costumes designed especially for them. Barbie can glide with style in her gorgeous gowns and feather boas while she dances the foxtrot or waltz with her handsome partner, Ken. He can be dressed in a coordinating costume made to knock the socks off any panel of judges. Or, you can design Latin costumes with red roses and black flashy fabrics chosen to strike a fire, burn up the dance floor, and intimidate the other competitors as Barbie and Ken execute advanced tango, rumba or mambo routines.
And, dont forget the fun you can have with fringe and other embellishments as you design jive and swing dance costumes to highlight their tricky steps.

The possibilities are endless! Being able to design and sew your own ballroom dance costumes for Barbie and Ken will allow you to create anything you want, and here are some tips on how to do it:

1. Start with standard Barbie and Ken doll clothes patterns. You can purchase these in most fabric stores and on internet craft sites. Watch for pattern sales, and you might save some money. You probably wont find actual ballroom dance doll patterns, but you can select some suitable for dresses, suits, or anything that you think will work with your costume ideas.

2. Decide on the style or theme of your costume. For example, when I decided to create a tango costume, I knew that I wanted Ken to have pants with a long sleeve shirt and a coordinating sash. As for Barbie, I wanted her to have a long dress with ruffles on the sleeves. Knowing a few specifics like these before you begin will help speed up the creative process and allow you to use your time more efficiently.

3. Think about the quality or type of fabrics, as well as the color. For the tango costume, I picked red and black fabrics in a variety of textures. Velour, nylon, and lycra are all great choices because they sew up easily, and they dont shred on the edges like many other fabrics. In addition, they have excellent stretch factors. Costumes made with these materials are flexible and fit the dolls well.

4. Be prepared to modify your patterns. It will be most convenient if you can find a pattern that matches the style you have in mind. But for me, that rarely happens and I usually adjust the pattern to get what I am looking for. To do this, I purchase inexpensive muslin and experiment until I get the fit just right. Then I use paper to draw the final pattern so that I can use it again in the future.

5. Have fun with embellishments! How often do you get to use sequins, glamorous trims, colorful fringe, fluffy feathers, or bright, flashy fabrics that glow in the dark? Let imagination be your guide, and have fun as you make your selections.

6. Remember that there is no right or wrong way to create your own Barbie and Ken ballroom costumes as long as you are happy with the final product. Your unique designs will be the envy of many doll and dance enthusiasts. Dont be afraid to experiment with colors and textures. Sometimes accidents happen along the way, and the unexpected style may actually be better than the original one. Good luck, enjoy, and let the dance begin!

Jell-O Without Whip Cream

Do you like Jell-O? It's okay I guess; I mean it's not a hot fudge sundae is it? But if you add a little whip cream, then my friend you've got something worth calling dessert. My question to you is, does your website have that something extra, that dollop of whip cream on top that says, "oh mama let me at it," or does it just lie there squirming in your dish with the sound of Peggy Lee's voice ringing in your ears, "is that all there is?"

If your website disappointments, you need something that provides the 'eureka factor' and that can be provided with a creative, informative Web-video.

The Chicago Bulls Without Michael Jordan

How the mighty have fallen, at least in terms of brand personality. I mean it's not like the Chicago Bulls stink? It's just that without MJ they're not the Chicago Bulls of old. When Michael played we all watched, he was magic, he wasn't just a great basketball player, he was a great personality and he gave the team it's character; no Michael, no personality.

Is your website like the new Chicago Bulls, a talented group of players with skills but no singular personality? Time for a humanity injection, add a Web-video featuring a signature character host who can generate some excitement and establish your unique business personality.

Television Without Sound

You're watching your favorite television show, say CSI, the Vegas one not Miami, and the phone rings. It's your mother. You turn the television's sound down so you can hear her but you're still watching the show. You love your Mom but Grissom has just discovered a new miniature killer clue and you need to know what is going on, but your Mom is carrying on about how your Dad needs new dentures or something Frustrating. No audio, no information.

Does your website have the same effect as watching television without the sound. It's there, people visit, but they leave without getting your message. Time to add a little life to your presentation in the form of a Web-video that tells your story out loud.

Words Without Meaning

Have you ever reread someone's website copy several times and still not understood what the heck they're trying to tell you, or maybe you understand every word but still can't figure out what they're selling?

Words have meaning, they are meant to convey a message not hide it. A lousy video script is no better than lousy print copy. Your Web-audience has no patience for mumbo-jumbo that masquerades as information or for text and dialog that says nothing in as many words as possible in an effort to attract the search engines. Words have meaning, say them with style and deliver them with conviction.

The Rumba Without Rhythm

Have you ever sat at a wedding and watched people dance? There are the people who know how to move, how to respond to the their partners and to communicate with the slightest of gestures or movements. And then there are the others who look like they've got something icky stuck to the bottom of their shoes and are trying desperately to remove it.

If you want to communicate to your audience, you have to use all the techniques available. Communication is more than just copy, its voice, gesture, movement and meaningful dialog.

Romance Without Kisses

Ah the first kiss, something special that can seal a relationship or sour it forever. Your landing page is like that first embrace. Is yours as exciting as it could be, or is it like the guy who spends the entire first date talking about his double entry booking keeping skills?

A well-crafted, expertly presented marketing message is like a seduction; if you're not generating any excitement don't expect to produce any sales either. Boring mission statement gobbledygook and keyword-laden palaver are not the same as an enticing video. An engaging business story, well told, is like a juicy wet-one planted right on your audience's lips.

A Joke Without A Punch Line

Everybody likes a funny story. A good joke is nothing more than a short story with a set-up, an escalation, and a twist, but the real key to a good story lies in the telling. Even comedians with second-rate material can get their audience's howling if they know how to deliver their material.

It's all well and good to repeat the mantra, "websites are about content," but if that content isn't delivered with some style and panache, don't expect anybody to pay much attention.

A Song Without A Hook

Hit songs are highly structured stories with verses that function as chapters or acts, and a chorus that provides the hook that sticks in your audience's heads. Add a toe tapping beat and some instrumental flourishes and you've got something that people will listen to over and over again.

Does that sound like your website presentation? Are people willing to come back to your site just to watch your presentation, or does your website leave visitors with a 'been there, done that' impression?

Information Without Knowledge

Just because you're in business doesn't mean you've got to be boring. And just because you dump a lot of facts and figures and bulleted points onto your Web-pages doesn't mean you're making a convincing argument for anyone to buy your stuff.

Web audiences demand more. If you won't give it to them, you can be sure someone else will, like maybe your competition.

Interactivity Without Purpose

Can we all just stop and take a breath and think about this whole interactivity thing. Let's all get interactive, why? I mean what is interactivity anyway? Is it developing a hugely expensive game that people can play on your website to avoid working, or is it getting them to click on the "Tell Me More" button?

I vote for the interactivity that leads to opening a dialogue with a potential client, one that gets visitors to pick up the phone and call you to discuss their needs, not the one that generates a "Game Over" message. Of course that assumes you're willing to actually talk to customers.

Frequency Without Resonance

I happened to like vinegar on my fries, okay it's weird I admit it, but the Dutch like mayonnaise on theirs, even weirder. I once had a chef in a Tucson restaurant come out of the kitchen and confront me when I asked the waiter for vinegar (it's a Canadian thing). The chef approached the table and asked who ordered the vinegar? I reluctantly raised my hand. "You must be from Canada," he said, "I'm from Victoria, where you from?"

Good advertising is all about delivering a message that resonates with your audience. It doesn't matter how many times you run an advertisement if that advertisement doesn't make an impression on your audience. You can't be afraid to be creative or even a bit weird.

Humor Without Laughter

Dr. Max Sutherland in his e-mail newsletter report, "False Alarm Theory: How Humorous Ads Work" describes how laughter is a hardwired residual mechanism that developed in our ape days as an 'all clear' signal once a danger had past. The 'all clear' message is passed on from one ape to another, until the entire troop is screeching with the ecstasy of survival.

A guy slips on a banana and breaks his neck - that's not funny. A guy slips on a banana, jumps up and looks around to see if anybody saw - that's funny. Humor is based on creating some sense of uncertainty or tension that is ultimately relieved with a humorous punch line or comforting resolution. The safe or amusing resolution creates a chain reaction in the audience that signals, "hay guys, all is well; everything is back to normal."

Without tension there can be no relief, no opportunity for an entertaining resolution that creates a cascading viral reaction among your audience. So don't expect your website to be passed on to friends and colleagues unless you deliver a compelling presentation that offers the opportunity to signal the rest of the world that all is well.

Are you looking for ways to overcome tiredness?

Naturally, everyone will encounter situations when you feel awfully tired even though you did not do anything at all. You feel like you do not want to move, talk and it is even hard to sit in front of the couch and turn on the television. You feel that your energy just vanished.

Here are 5 amazing ways to overcome tiredness for you if you frequently encounter that irritatingly tired feeling. You need not buy any medication, the one thing you need is the motivation to overcome tiredness. In order to keep tiredness at bay, you need to keep to these 5 rules:-

1. Do not forget to have breakfast. Worse, if you have never had breakfast before, then it is time to make a change. Your metabolism rate will decrease and you begin to have a tired feeling if you do not have a hearty meal for breakfast. Try to include yogurt, cheese and bread in your breakfast. If you do not have the time for breakfast at home, pack some and take some fruits to work as well.

2. Drink as much as you can. When your body gets dehydrated, you will slack and feel tired easily. As such, you really need to drink ample water to prevent dehydration. While coffee as always been touted as the traditional energetic drink, do drink more mineral water, fruit juices or even green tea. The following recipe is especially useful:- You will need one banana, 0.04 gallon orange juice, spoon syrup and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Puree the banana and add the rest in. Drink on the go.

3. Get some rest if you feel the need to. The best way to rest is to get a good sleep. While sleeping, our cells, memory and mood regenerate. To avoid any glitches in your body system, the ideal number of hours of sleep required per person per day is around 8 hours. If you want to sleep but somehow cannot fall asleep, use warm bath water with lavender essential oil as a sedative. This will put you in a relaxing mood and fall asleep easily.

4. If the tired feeling really gets to you, switch on some pumping music and dance away. If you find it difficult for you to do, it means it will really benefit you. Control your mind and just pick up the steps and dance. Move your body like no one cares.

5. Do not sweat the small stuff. Stress can influence your energy potential in a destructive way. Do not allow yourself to be disappointed. There is no way stress can be avoided but you can overpower yourself by mixing with positive people and disconnecting yourself from situations which you cannot alter the end results. When a distressful situation comes about, shrug it off by saying "NO" and enjoy life.

Get rid of that tired feeling now and stay healthy!

Getz/Gilberto

Originally released in March 1964, this collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist João Gilberto came at seemingly the end of the bossa nova craze Getz himself had sparked in 1962 with Jazz Samba, his release with American guitarist Charlie Byrd. Jazz Samba remains the only jazz album to reach number one in the pop charts. In fact, the story goes that Getz had to push for the release of Getz/Gilberto since the company did not want to compete with its own hit; it was a good thing he did. Getz/Gilberto, which featured composer Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano, not only yielded the hit "Girl from Ipanema" (sung by Astrud Gilberto, the guitarist's wife, who had no professional experience) but also "Corcovado" ("Quiet Night")--an instant standard, and the definitive version of "Desafinado." Getz/Gilberto spent 96 weeks in the charts and won four Grammys. It remains one of those rare cases in popular music where commercial success matches artistic merit. Bossa nova's "cool" aesthetic--with its understated rhythms, rich harmonies, and slightly detached delivery--had been influenced, in part, by cool jazz. Gilberto in particular was a Stan Getz fan. Getz, with his lyricism, the bittersweet longing in his sound, and his restrained but strong swing, was the perfect fit. His lines, at once decisive and evanescent, focus the rest of the group's performance without overpowering. A classic. --Fernando Gonzalez
Customer Review: Wonderful Music!
Wonderful and relaxing music. Very soft, wonderful sound tracks. There are two soundtracks of "The Girl From Ipanema," with the first being the ultimate recording. I would highly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys cool jazz or any relaxing International-style music.
Customer Review: A Serendipitous Masterpiece
In history, seemingly all great things are happenstance. One could certainly say the same about this serendipitous recording. A quiet, gentle, beautiful record of 8 songs (and 2 reprises) it created a time capsule of that era that surprisingly stands up to todays standards. A great album to relax to, put it on when you need to seriously unwind without drugs or alcohol. It works amazingly well.

When downloading or looking for music, it's easy to find a site that will download songs and movies, but unfortunately not all of them have the selection you want. You can just point and click to get whatever you want, and not worry if something is in, and not worry about individual costs. Some companies let you download individual songs, but the cost and selection is annoying, or on the other hand, pay a flat fee, but never be able to keep the songs, and once again their selection is a bit of a pain.

There are a couple of steps that you need to take to make sure that you have an easy experience. Make sure you have the room on your hard drive for the movies and the music. A big complaint with the normal download sites are that lack of selection, and your media player has a large problem with the navigation, and it can be hard to find everything. You won't have to worry about that again, find your music, listen to whatever you'd like. In your folders, make sure that you create separate names and separate folders so managing your music and movies would be a lot easier. Find your movies and your TV shows as well, with the same ease as the music.

The navigation is very simple, and you shouldn't have a problem with it at all. It's all broken down, and is very user friendly. Enjoy the new interface, and enjoy the availability of the new music, and the classics.

What is it about words? What is it that makes them so fascinating, or so difficult? Way back when, when I was in school, I was a perfectionist. Of course, I still am, but back then one of the ways that those traits came out was in my writing. I have always loved to write. It was a point of pride to never use the same words to describe the same thing twice in anything that I wrote. One thing that I did that enhanced my ability to fulfill this quest was taking foreign languages. In high school, I took French, Spanish and Latin. It was so cool how learning these languages improved my English, especially Latin. I can remember my Latin teacher telling me that someday in the future, "agricola", or farmer, would probably be the only Latin word I would remember. Even then, Latin was a language that was "dying" in popularity. Of course they were close to right, although I do remember "amor" or love, as well. (That's the romantic in me, I suppose.)

The cool thing about learning new languages was the understanding they provided me in understanding English. Agricola, for example, is a root word for agriculture. Amor is a root word for amorous. When I was in school we had the choice of taking French or Spanish in 7th grade. I chose French because that was the language that my best friend at the time chose. I was always glad that I did, because after learning English and French, Spanish, and then Latin, were a breeze. How many times in your life have you heard someone talk about their "fianc" or about going to a "rendez-vous"? What about eating "tortillas" or "enchiladas"? Every language has added to ours in some way. Latin is the root language for all three of the others, as well as several other languages, including Italian.

Now, why would anyone care about my foreign language experience? Well, what it all comes down to is my vocabulary. While I, admittedly, have lost quite a bit over the years, the experiences that I have had have given me a basis to remember. When I speak, or when I write, it is natural for me to do my best to use words that are a perfect fit. I cannot relax when I am writing if I cannot think of exactly the word I need to make my meaning understood. Having a Thesaurus helps, of course, but what about when I am not at home, or in a situation where I have to have instantaneous recall? That is where having a large vocabulary can make a huge difference. It makes a difference in how employers look at me. It makes a difference in how others perceive my intelligence. It really comes in handy when helping my children in school.

All that is well and good, but what if you haven't had the opportunities that I have had to learn? What if you are a student, struggling in school? What if you are a parent and your kids are struggling, but you are unable to help them? What if you lost your job and are in the market for a new one? What if you are trying to climb the corporate ladder or just move up in your company? Or even, what if you are retired and just want to travel or volunteer, and you end up helping children with their schoolwork? Whatever place you are in in life, a substantial vocabulary will help you.
