$*$ Day Watch Unrated Blu ray

DAY WATCH is a curious piece of cinema. Yes, it's visually impressive (though less stylised than Night Watch), yes it's packed full of action, and yes it's amazing that all this was done on a tiny budget. But, like its predecessor, it fails to fully engage the viewer. As with Night Watch the film has a staccato structure. The crammed and convoluted plot is constantly manipulated in order to fill the action quotient. Okay, so this is the case with most action movies, but here, when combined with the absence of any really sympathetic characters, it leads to a rather emotionless experience. For the most part this is an example of style over content. That said there's certainly plenty of style.

This is a movie that begs for a spectacular high definition release but this Sony blu-ray falls a little bit short.

Certainly this is one of the most visually stunning films ever made. The colors in this film rival SPEED RACER (and this ain't a Speed Racer sort of movie)! The costumes are never short of dazzling and the set design is so ornate, detailed and opulant that it is difficult to describe. The story is the great stuff of an over the top soap opera and the action scenes are loud and exciting. Chow Yun Fat and Gong Li are superb and Jay Chou is a revelation as the dashing Prince Jai. This is a great film. The blu-ray transfer looks pretty good, but not as good as you might expect it to. The colors are vibrant and beautiful and fine detail is evident in the costumes and long shots but some scenes look a bit soft (perhaps this is a fault of the source print and not the transfer). The soundtrack offers several variations from a Mandarin PCM 5.1, Mandarin Dolby 5.1 and English dub in 5.1. All of it sounds pretty good but nothing really special. Subtitles can be turned on or off for any version. The extras are just ported over from the DVD release with the 3 minute premier being a bore and the short documentary being fairly interesting and informative. Sony didn't seem to go the extra mile for this release and that is a shame because director Zhang Yimou went the extra mile to make an extraordinary and higly entertaining picture.

Beer League is an *extremely* vulgar, obnoxious, and inappropriate film. It's completely distasteful, gross, disrespectful of women (rather strongly) and it's just... a film intended for grown men.



You know, people call these kind of films teenage humor, but would YOU want your teenager watching a film where the sexual content is extremely high around every single turn? I know I wouldn't. Because of that, this is a guy movie.



Hey, I'm a guy and I did enjoy the movie, but there's absolutely no way you can deny how incredibly trashy this kind of humor is.



The storyline is about a team of softball players (grown men with no life) saying the most obnoxious things imaginable to each other (including frequent insults towards each other when someone would mess up a play on the field).



What WAS incredibly funny was the character of a mother always appearing RIGHT when her son was ready to have some disgusting fun with his girlfriend, haha.



This film is complete trash, but satisfying enough to watch it with a group of beer-drinkin', Molly Hatchet-jammin' boys.

Dennis pretty much has everything covered in his extensive review. Just here to say it now one of my favorite Anime titles ever after (arrived today and I just finished it...). Viewed it with the English audio track to not worry about missing visuals while reading subtitles. It is a really well done English dubb. I don't agree with Alejandro's opinion, to me the story actually draws me more in than the visuals. Great sense of friendship and adventure is established and the humor works well. This series has a soul and great feel to it.



With that said, the visuals and audio ARE awesome. Picture is georgeous from my 720P HD projector on a 92" screen and the Dolby True HD soundtrack through my 5.2 HT system was mostly impressive - especially the racing and launch scenes (combination Formula 1 sound with futuristic power plant screaming along nearly brought tears to my eyes and the lauch scenes had some great punch - vibrating the room very well.) Ambient sounds were ok but not spectacular, nowhere near what 5 Centimeters per Second has.



All together it is a title I would highly recommend to anyone; it's one of the best anime titles I've seen. Here's my favorite anime list of the last decade for reference in what I like and find really enjoyable to watch:

In these days of Hollywood movies aimed at 12 to 14 year olds, this comes across as clever and not too formulaic.



Mac and Jackson are an updated black Hope and Crosby with street lingo comedic exchanges that actually had me laughing.



This is no minor feat, as I can't remember a recent comedy over the past couple of years that had me smiling (In Bruges did have its moments though).



Two of the more memorable scenes are:



1.Mac choking their dead band leader as he argues with Jackson about why they broke up.Oh yeah,they're in a piano shaped coffin,on stage at the Apollo theater.



2.Jackson jumping out of a shared bed in disgust, because Mac had mistakenly taken a Viagra(instead of a heart pill) with the obvious results, was another pretty classic moment.



When I initially saw the previews in the theater,I figured it was another silly piece of Hollywood garbage,but I was VERY wrong.

DISTURBIA is a fun modernization of REAR WINDOW, updated for the Information Age of video games, webcams, and cell phones. It finds a troubled young teen who is sentenced to house arrest after a violent episode at school. With nothing left to do, he takes to watching the neighbors, but finds out more than he wanted to when he witnesses a series of suspicious activities taking place next door. For a polished Teen Horror flick, it delivers plenty of action, comedy, and suspense in a pretty little package. Shia LeBeouf hits his stride as the average, everyday boy next door in a winning performance that is single-handedly responsible for the overall success of the picture. The script is smart and well written considering its target audience, which allows for a greater appeal to both the teen and older Horror crowds. Where the film makes its greatest misstep is in its largely overblown finale, which would have been much more effective if it had been scaled back to a more subtle end. While it doesn't reinvent the wheel, DISTURBIA makes for an entertaining watch with a fresh twist on the voyeuristic theme laid out in the Hitchcock classic.

I have been a nightwish fan for years and I have owned end of an era for several years now also,It's one of my favorite live concerts out there and the last with Tarja,I have seen a few nightwish concerts and this one is the best i have seen for sound and picture,The entire band is spot on;)And comparing this Blu-ray to the standard dvd,well The picture isn't a whole lot better than the standard being the standard had a sorta washed out color look and thats not the blu ray's fault its the way the original was shot but on a good note the picture is sharper and color is abit better its not anamorpic widescreen like the standard was so its nice to have a full picture on my bigscreen its still widescreen just not anamorpic so no zooming ect needed for a full image,Sound is standard 5.1 or 2.0 so its the same as the standard dvd was which isnt terrible unless you want lcpm lossless hdmi TrueHD ect...But as for sound of the concert it rocks evem in 5.1;)All nightwish fans need to have this concert its one of there best and one i can watch over and over i have watched it 1000x and never get tire of seeing it,and its still a slight Improvement over the standard dvd and one of my favorite live shows ever;)

In this corner we have some clips from the TV series and in the other corner of a moderately sized field we have some more clips. Its basically about two dozen extras in total driving a couple of jeeps and a school bus. The battle is truly ludicrous at best. See if you can spot the same extras getting killed. Oh the highlight is a tree house getting blown up. You know its a highlight because they show it being blown up several times during the battle. Seriously at least five times the tree house goes boom. The humans are bad shots and must have been drunk when they put on their own make up. Hilariously bad.

I read the book and enjoyed it, although for me there was too much emphasis on the relationships / trials & tribulations of school kids, and not enough on the lore and activities of vampires. Some creepy scenes, but not a particularly scary read for me as compared to Salem's Lot by Stephen King or They Thirst by Robert McCammon. I then rented the DVD, hoping the movie format would increase the tension and fear factors. No such luck. I found the movie so boring that I never made it all the way through. The acting was stiff, the dialogue wooden, the characters shallow with little development and no charisma, and the action tedious. In the book, the little vampire girl was described as beautiful with delicate features; in the movie she was plain with a big nose. The boy was supposed to be overweight and pale; in the movie he was pale and lean and platinum blond, like a star waiting to grow up. No innovative cinematography or sets. I do NOT like overly gory movies where all you see is slice and dice, but I do like suspense, a sense of ominous evil that you the viewer are dying to see defeated, and a set of "rules" constraining the monster that make defeat a possibility. These rules might be a vulnerability to stakes in the heart, aversion to daylight and garlic, etc. It doesn't really matter what they are, as long as they are consistent within the reality portrayed and so make the story believable. This movie only had time to portray some psychological background for the children described in the book; the vampire story is pretty scanty. Sorry I rented it.

Good news! This disc is very close to perfect. I and other reviewers experienced some technical issues with the Delightful Forest blu-ray disc, but the Brothers Five blu-ray disc that I received today has no flaws that I can see on my initial viewing.



The colors are vibrant, the swordplay is flashy, and the detail is excellent as viewed on my Sony BDP-S370 and Hitachi 42HDS69 HDTV. Anything that was not perfect (lighting, darkness, no steadicam on long sweeping shots or zooms) was obviously there in the original film because it is all so crisp and clear. The picture is really beautiful. There were no artifacts or skips or stutters. Having watched these films in various incarnations over the years (theater, TV, videotape, dvd, and now blu-ray) I can honestly say they have never looked or sounded better.



I have seen a few comments about the subs and if that bothers you then you will probably not be pleased when a character's dialogue is rendered as "I want make a stab." Frankly, it's part of the whole experience for me so I have no problem with it. I should have continued studying Mandarin when I had the chance if I wanted to truly appreciate these films. And unlike the Delightful Forest blu-ray disc, there is no English dub for you to fall back on.



The prices on these recent releases from Well Go USA are great in my opinion. YMMV!



Next up this weekend - the Heroic Ones blu-ray disc. What a great time to be a fan of classic Shaw Brothers martial arts films!

I was lost in this movie it pulled me in so deeply and held me there. Even when a storm came and took out my power I couldn't stop crying and as soon as the power came back on I went right back to the movie. I have thought of this movie many times since watching it. This is not the kind of movie one forgets, no, this is the kind of movie that stays with you and haunts you forever.

I don't normally review movies, but this movie touched me so deeply inside that it has definantly left a mark. Soraya is an angel now and no one can hurt her ever again. The God her aunt loves and serves is the God that will not allow the people who murdered Soraya into Heaven!

If you know that "life needs water," "water comes from clouds," and "frogs skin requires moisture," then you won't have learned anything after watching this show. The narration is full of banalities, generalities and common knowledge.



Although the pictures are beautiful, they don't often have anything to do with what the narrator is talking about. Although you will miss the music if you turn off the audio, that's the only thing you'll miss. The title is also misleading. The show doesn't confine itself to oceans, lakes, and rivers, but also examines life in the mountains and rainforests.



If you like hi-def pictures of water and animals, this is a great show; but if you want to learn something, this is not the movie for you. Instead, try David Attenborough's "Blue Planet" Blue Planet: Seas of Life (Special Edition)

Untraceable is a disappointing action film and reminded me Silence of the Lambs in many ways - except the Internet users were set up as the murderers by a diabolical predator. The film has potential, but the director Gregory Hoblit (Fracture) does not give the film's plot a smooth feel.



The location is dark, dreary, rainy Portland, Oregon. Diane Lane is the star playing Jennifer Marsh, the FBI special agent, who fights cybercrime. The first few scenes are the actors in the FBI offices spewing out technical and computer terms that glaze the eyes over. We see a raid of a local home when it is determined a cybercrime was committed - a swat team arrests a boy for downloading copyright material - the over reaction seemed off kilter and unbelievable for me.



Untraceable combines a serial killer who sets up a website called [...] with displays of graphic murders and the Internet users who "hit" on the site. Each time they watch the death of the victim comes closer whether dripping of sulfuric acid or heat lamps turning on to burn the victim to death.



Jennifer Marsh, the heroine cybercop, steels herself to find the killer, even though her mother and daughter may be at risk.



The last part of the movie is the best as the thrill of the chase comes to a close.

I had only seen this movie one time prior to buying it at Amazon. That was about 25 years ago. I didn't know what the name of the movie was, but I just remember how funny Peter Sellers was in it. After searching on the internet, I finally found out the name of the movie (Being There). It's been great to watch it again. It may be a bit slow paced, but Peter Sellers is just so funny as Chauncey Gardner. Chauncey is mentally challenged, but due to circumstances in his life, he is put into an environment where everybody misinterprets what he says as pure genius. I don't think that anybody could play the part of Chauncey better than Peter Sellers. This is a very funny movie, you'll enjoy it.
