$*$ Napoleon Dynamite Blu ray

I finally bought napoleon dynamite cuz it is a movie I had seen but wanted to be able to watch it without wasting time with tv commercials. So many funny jokes and napoleon says some of the funniest lines. The trailers for NP did not really get my attention and when it finally did I was happy I took the time. The characters are very retro its like a flash back. You can watch this movie over and it doesn't get old.

    I was not impressed with this DVD at all. While the quality of the picture is okay, the beaches shown are nothing particularly spectacular and are shot at horrible times of day like high noon? where there is very sharp contrast with blown out whites and dark shadows. And who is the guy sitting there with his dog, and the kid running around? Looks like someone just set it up and let it run not caring who ran in or out of the frame. I really think I could have done just as well with my own video camera, on a tripod, at the beach. Really not what I expected.

    #$ Fantastic Four Blu ray

    Fantastic Four: 4 out of 10 Some comic book heroes don't translate well to film. Daredevil was a case in point. While a blind guy wearing a cherry red leather outfit might work on the panels of a comic book it looks silly on screen. (Not that this excuses the horrible Daredevil movie mind you) Mr. Fantastic (The stretching guy) of the Fantastic Four suffers this same fate. When he stretches it looks either disgusting (hand squeezing under the crack beneath a door) or quite silly (every other time he stretches.) Not that the character is helped by Ioan Gruffud's somnolent performance. He makes up one third of the most sleep inducing love triangle ever filmed.

    The lady in question is the Jessica Alba who looks fantastic in and out of her costume (She turns invisible when naked sorry guys. But some dutiful frame by frame DVD action will surprise the patient) but she expresses no emotion about either man (Or for that matter having superpowers. But I guess looking like Jessica Alba is kind of a superpower in itself).

    The third part is our pseudo villain Dr. Doom. (I say pseudo because he turns villain sometime around the closing credits in the most truncated villain performance in the history of superhero films) Dr. Doom as written for the comics is the perfect screen super villain. Which begs the question why he is barely in this movie and more importantly why he is a metrosexual evil businessman (Forced to be evil because his IPO went down in price and the bank is pulling out? This shows a remarkable lack of knowledge how IPO's work) When Alba tells Gruffud she never slept with Doom we have to believe her. I have a hard time believing these saccharine characters go the bathroom let alone have sex.

    The other two members of the four (Evans and Chiklis) give competent if one note performances. But by the time all the introductions and back-story is completed the movie is over. With no villain, unimaginative action set pieces and some shaky special effects Fantastic Four is more mediocre than fantastic. Though there is that one frame of a not quite invisible Alba that is Fantastic indeed.

    ++ Adoration Blu ray

    A high school French teacher gives her class a translation exercise based on a real news story about a terrorist who plants a bomb in the airline luggage of his pregnant girlfriend. The assignment has a profound effect on one student, Simon, who reads his version to the class and then takes it to the Internet. He has created a false identity, which allows him to probe a family secret. As Simon uses his new persona to journey deeper into his past, the public reaction is swift and strong. Then an exotic woman revels her true identity and the truth about Simon's family emerges. This movie is not for everyone. You must be open minded and have patience and let the story start to make sense. There is lots of irony, pain, family issues, drama and ethnic mis-understanding. The acting is terrific, and the score subtly effective. If you enjoy these types of movies, then check this one out.

      This review is for most everyone else out there. I'm NOT a videofile so sifting through the barely discernable minutia of digital high def technical mertis and / or pitfalls is not my forte. The disc looked great on my plasma from start to finish, even the underwater footage. And Speaking of footage, there were many UNMATCHED camera shots here, even comapred to BBC's magnum opus, Planet Earth. I found the narration fine. As far as editing, the chapter selection needed some re-organization but as far as complaining about how long shots were held on someone's personal wish list? come on. Let's face it, after Planet Earth, it's hard for any nature program not to seem redundant, yet you don't feel that here. The human element as described clearly leaves the viewer with a new appreciation in some areas and a return to reality in others. So no - it's not all about critters, it's a better over view on ALL the elements influencing this previously poorly understood area of the planet.

        Was a pretty terrible movie. I liked some of its narrative structure (the character who narrates was interesting, but never developed). Some reviewers seem to think it has a lot of T&A, but I don't think they were watching the same movie. I counted 3 or 4 scenes with nudity. In any case, the movie was pretty boring. The narrator character was far more interesting than the protagonist, which usually makes for a lame story, except maybe in some novels like Cárcel de amor. Bottom line is that I paid $8 for this movie, and it's not really even worth that. The characters aren't developed. There's nothing funny about it, and there isn't even enough gratuitous nudity to make the movie worthwhile.

          @# Dragon Ball Z Kai Season One Part One Blu ray

          I might be totally mistaken so someone correct me if I am wrong. But is the Dragon Box set not Dragon Ball: Kai? I could have sworn that it was.

          Even so, I myself am a huge Dragon Ball fan and I feel completely ripped off with this product.

          I know it's on Blu-Ray and they are generally more expensive, but how can they justify paying $40 for only 13 episodes? There are a total of 291 episodes. If they keep releasing these in 13 episodes a box, then over time it will cost around $880 if you want to own the entire series. And that is far too much when I can buy the complete Dragon Box set for about $200.

          I really want to own the Kai series but the price is just rediculous.

          Until Funimation realizes this then I will just be recording the series as it comes on the Nick Toons channel this May.

          It's a great product that deserves 5 Stars, but the price is just way too high when there are cheaper alternatives.

            @# Galaxy Quest Blu ray

            I wonder whether a non-Trekker would enjoy this movie as much as we Star Trek fans do. The answer is, probably not quite so much or in quite the same way, but I'm pretty sure they'd like it. That's part of what makes "Galaxy Quest" so special. Who needs a movie that only works for those who dress like a Starfleet officer to walk the dog? We'd like a decent plot and some interesting characters, too, if you don't mind.

            We'll get to the Star Trek references in a second - first, a little plot summary. "Galaxy Quest" is about the cast of a familiar-looking television show, some 25 years after its cancellation. Their careers stalled long ago, and they make a living by opening shopping malls and appearing at conventions, where obsessed fans dress like them and ask them highly technical questions about spaceships that never existed. Among those fans is a group of genuine aliens who have based their entire culture on tapes of the old show, which they assume are historical documents - these beings barely even know what falsehood is, let alone know it when they see it. In any case, they are in desperate need of help; an interstellar tyrant has nearly wiped them out and they believe that the "Galaxy Quest" heroes can defeat him. It takes the actors a while to realize that they're in a real space adventure, and it takes the aliens rather longer to realize what they've let themselves in for. At which point everyone's a little too busy not dying to say "Uh-oh".

            This movie gets it all right. Instead of a bunch of cookie-cutter heroes, for instance, we get a group of highly distinct personalities. The original captain is an egomaniac who can't believe his luck, the original first officer is a trained Shakespearian who bitterly resents having to keep that ridiculous makeup on, and the original communications officer is delighted to find that she has something to do besides looking sexy and repeating whatever the computer says. The original helmsman, who was a child during the show's original run, is grown up and angry and terrified at the prospect of driving a real ship, the original engineer is calm enough to take the whole business in stride, and there's even an extra from the original program along for the ride who's just "jazzed to be on the show again" (although he grows a bit concerned about the likelihood that he'll die in this particular episode).

            Meanwhile, the aliens are a bunch of sweethearts. They wear electronic devices that allow them to appear human (in their true form they look like psychedelic octopi, sort of) and they have the craziest imitation of human laughter you've ever heard. They will do anything for their heroes, up to and including preparing a dish of live bugs for the supposedly non-human first officer's dinner. As for their nemesis - well, we're told that any adventure story depends for excitement on its villain, and this guy is hideous, perfectly vicious, and extremely hard to get rid of. Nice combination.

            Many of the performances here have the sort of fizz you get when serious actors have an enormous amount of fun. Some of these folks, such as Tim Allen and Tony Shalhoub, have a comic background in clubs and on television, but they are quite capable of dramatic work. Like Alan Rickman and Sigourney Weaver (it's nice to see Ripley from "Alien" having a nice time for a change), they sensibly submit intensely dramatic performances - none of this deadly winking at the audience just to let us know that they know it's funny. That's the kiss of death, and it's nowhere in evidence here.

            And while I'm on the subject, will someone please make Sam Rockwell a star already? He's wonderful at comedy here and elsewhere, his Shakespeare in "Midsummer Night's Dream" was a revelation, and he made a horrifying villain of his own in "The Green Mile" The guy can do anything. A word to the wise.

            Anyway, as I said, "Galaxy Quest" makes a wonderful movie on its own terms. For us Trekkers, no kidding folks, it's just about perfect.

            For one thing, these characters relate to each other according to Star Trek gossip - everyone resents the captain's hogging the spotlight, the guy with the prosthetic makeup feels pretty ambiguous about it, and then there's that young fan who won't admit it but is certain the whole thing is real. He turns out to be right, of course, and his reaction when he learns this is priceless.

            The show itself picks up a few in-jokes from Star Trek, like the way the characters fall uphill during space battles and the spacey scientific details that make no sense when you think about them, not to mention the fact that the captain always finds some way to show off his torso. Fandom is presented properly, too - not only the obsessed fans themselves, but the constant availability of T-shirts and other souvenirs at conventions.

            And finally, there's enough emotional punch to this movie to ensure that it's more than just a novelty act. It comes through primarily in the underlying affection between the cast members, for all their bickering, and the way that affection transfers to the aliens, particularly when the actors wonder if they will really be able to help out. In other words, "Galaxy Quest" is the story of a group of people accustomed to thinking of their lives as wasted, who learn to take themselves and others seriously again. Like many comedies, this one is really just a mushpot at its core, and the perfection of its attitude toward the old television show gets all the sentimentality down smooth and easy.

            Trust me, guys, you know enough about Star Trek and its environment to enjoy "Galaxy Quest", whether James Kirk is your captain or not.

              $ The Hitcher Blu ray

              THE HITCHER begins with a young couple heading out for Spring Break on a long and lonesome road through New Mexico. A chance encounter with a murderous hitchhiker leaves them running for their lives in a sadistic game of cat and mouse. Sean Bean steps in for Rutger Hauer in this recent remake of the classic film, whose chiseled features and razorblade smile make him appear trustworthy until he shifts gears in to his chilling true self. Bean is an excellent choice for John Ryder, and manages a strong performance that is worthy of the role. The addition of a second character from the start allows for some much needed dialog (though be it filler) throughout the earlier scenes. The most apparent problem that exists with this version is that it shares a near-identical plot progression to the 1986 film, capitalizing on all of the most memorable moments with minimal changes. This makes it unnecessary at best, and a plagiaristic reshoot at worst. Despite the similarities, Meyers remake does recreate much of the same action and suspense with much success, giving it a clean look with decent acting even if it fails to produce anything original. Overall, audiences will find that THE HITCHER is an enjoyable representation of the story, though be it a clone.

                  I don't think I've ever written a review on a movie before on Amazon, but I just have to vent. This movie is so incredibly amazing until the last 25 minutes. Maybe a top 5 fave for me until they completely ruin the atmosphere, drama and story about people sacrificing for the greater good. How do they do this? By inexplicably going supernatural with the leader of the previous ship sent on the mission becoming some sort of sun burnt sun god or some crap. What a joke. WHY!!! Why do this??? Couldn't he have still been himself, just warped in the mind? Why make him a supernatural creature of some sort. I have nothing more to say really, other than I feel so let down by such an incredible first few acts.

                  Definitely the most letdown I've ever been during the course of viewing a movie.

                      This is a great addition to the Terminator series. Great story line which sets it post Judgement Day in Western California(Los Angeles, San Francisco, places in between) But was actually all filmed in Arizona which helped with the barren desert landscape design. You also really get a good look at the many designs of machines in this film which James Cameron didn't have the time to get into detail in Judgement Day. T-1s, T-600s, T-700s, T-800s, Hunter Killers, Moto-Terminators, The Harvester, you name it...this movie has it. Now actorwise, Christian Bale(The Dark Knight) as John Conner is for sure a lot better than the guy who played John in Rise of the Machines, very bad ass with a REAL desire to kill the machines and save his father, Kyle Reese played by Anton Yelchin(Star Trek). Then...finally...Sam Worthington(Avatar) as Marcus Wright...oh my god...I tell you, if Sam Worthington didn't play this role I don't know who would have. In 2003 Marcus Wright is on death row for killing 2 cops and his brother, he donates his body to Cyberdyne after his execution for experiments. He is then awakened in 2018 as a one of a kind infiltration prototype terminator which befriends an A-10 pilot, Blair Williams played by Moon Bloodgood(Street Fighter) and a love story forms after Marcus saves her multiple times. You will find out that Marcus Wright is the key to get John Connor into Skynet to save his father from being terminated. This talented aussie actor really did a break out role in this film and is my personal favorite character. This film has non stop action, amazing actors, and great effects to make this personally one of the best Terminator films yet.
