Has a bit of gore in the crime and killing scenes, but if you can look past that, you'll be addicted. Dexter is a serial killer who was taught by his cop father to only kill bad people who actually deserve to die. To complicate matters, he works in the homicide department at the local police station. Start with watching season one or you'll be confused about plot/characters.... Happy watching!

!! Signs Blu ray

I admit I was entirely wrong when I originally outright dismissed this movie when it first came out. I was apparently holding a grudge at the time because of my *strong* dislike for the Sixth Sense. Completely different movies, so my initial reaction upon watching Signs was totally unfair, and for that I feel the need to apologize. I'm sorry!



I guess back then I was expecting Signs to be an all-out alien invading film that involves the mysterious space creatures constantly finding terrifying ways to torture the people on Earth. Instead, the storyline is much slower paced, allowing more time to build suspense, and allowing more time to slowly unravel what the aliens look like and what their intentions are. Sorry, I didn't realize this back when the movie first came out.



What's even more mysterious about my dislike for Signs back in the day is that I usually LOVE small town, family-oriented films. I don't know what I was thinking back then to be honest, I really don't.



It's also entirely possible I just didn't get M. Night Shyamalan's style. After all, let's be completely honest here- his style was quite revolutionary when it first came out. I mean, this isn't your ordinary horror film. Some may love his style, others may not, but the one thing that can't be denied is that his style is certainly *different*.



Anyway, Signs does a great job keeping the suspense constant by way of releasing a very small amount of storyline at a time. It doesn't give away too much too soon so the movie ultimately becomes predictable. No, it avoids all THAT typical nonsense.



My favorite part of film is probably when the entire family is in the car, and hear alien screeches and sounds coming from the baby monitor. Everyone then exits the car, as the sound continues (apparently coming from the nearby cornfield, though to be honest, I was quite confused over what was taking place in Pennsylvania and what was taking place in Mexico City and other places). Talk about a perfectly executed eerie build-up in horror quality THIS moment is.



The ending is probably the weakest part, and in fact, the only negative I have with the movie. The best part about Signs is that, for the majority of it, we didn't actually SEE the aliens. So when the ending came along... I was disappointed.



The way the aliens appear should have been left up to our imaginations so we could have interpreted what they look like by ourselves. Small complaint, I promise.



Overall, yeah, the suspense is really good. I totally don't know why I didn't like this film when it was first released. I love it now. Mel Gibson nails his role, and the rest of the characters (including the little boy who DOES look like Macaulay Culkin) are right on the money as well. For the most part, this is horror storytelling done right.

This film is 4-stars not 5, but its primary success is exemplary: portraying the pain of a guy whose girl remains elusive. Such a role reversal is uncommon for the modern chick flick, but it's not played just for that novelty -- it's played for the reality of the emotion involved. 500DoS should be required viewing for women whose experiences have them believing men incapable of caring. Tom cares - and pays, and pays, and pays.



SPOILER: I thought the ending was more than a bit of a cheat. I don't remember what "Day number" (post-Summer) ended the film, but a guy like Tom would probably grieve quite awhile before reaching out toward a new girl (particularly a stranger), and even after he started again, his first few such advances would probably fail. To give him a quickie happy ending, starting off again post-Summer with a shot at a new relationship, felt tacked-on.

"Midnight Express" is not a common tale of heroism and Hollywood stunts. Neither is it about a new age youth that believed more in freedom from responsibility than freedom of the ideals. It starts from a quick adventurous act, but slowly starts to taint your values and respect for humanity. In a way it's a good lesson for those who think the world is their playground just because they were fortunate enough to be born to luxury and vanity.



What starts as apathy for a stupid act soon becomes a battle for human rights and freedom. This movie reminds you that you really cannot get away with any wrong deed. More in some places than others, but you will pay the price. Although in all fairness, Brad Davis was exquisite in his portrayal of the strong will and courage of Billy Hayes (did I mention it is based on a true story?:-).



I rate this move 4.8/5.0. It's pungent. But it's a bomb at that.

** Alien vs. Predator Blu ray

The first and most obvious thing you should know about AVP: Alien Vs Predator is that it's not going to win any Oscars nor does it want to. This is a popcorn movie all the way through; 101 minutes of turn-your-brain-off-and-enjoy entertainment. Remember that going into this movie and you'll be a-okay.



With that out of the way, what is there left to say? If you like Aliens and Predators or you just want to see the two duke it out, then go for it. Of course my advice would be to rent the movie first to judge for yourself whether or not it's worth buying. If you're buying the Blu-ray version, then you should know that both the Theatrical Version and Unrated Extended Version are on the same disc. But be warned that, other than two Commentary tracks (for the Theatrical Version only) and a Trivia Track, there are no extras on the disc. None. Zero. Nada. There's no behind-the-scenes footage whatsoever, which is disappointing. On the other hand, there's one Commentary in which Sanaa Lathan talks about "flying vaginas" so that's pretty interesting. Or completely creepy. You decide.



Anyway, that's all there is to this movie. If you've seen Paul W.S. Anderson's previous films, such as Mortal Kombat or Resident Evil or his post-AVP masterpiece known as Death Race, then you pretty much know what to expect from AVP. This is a movie that's all about plenty of mindless action that hopefully keeps your mind off of the weak story. But hey, there's nothing wrong with that. Every so often I like to sit back, relax, and watch a movie that doesn't try to make me care about anything other than how big an explosion is. Okay, I did care about Lance Henriksen. But how could I not? He's Lance frickin' Henriksen!

** Doom Blu ray

Funny, 5 years later... I really liked it! I hated Doom when it first came out. The plot was very different from the game, and not better, it had "The Rock," the next Hulk Hogan wannabee as a main actor... and just wasn't what I expected, so I was disappointed.

So I just popped it back in years later... and enjoyed every minute. It's actually a pretty decent movie in it's own right. The plot, while different, is pretty good, the effects well done, excellent sets and I don't have the same problem with The Rock as I did back then.

Some movies, like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Van Helsing and Doom, are much better once you get over the "they weren't what I was expecting or what I wanted" disappointment.

So give it another try... and enjoy.

Surprisingly there still seems to be some debate about whether or not Blu Ray is worth investing in. If you have any doubts about the high definition experience and what it can add to home entertainment, watch this excellent Buster Keaton classic and you will understand why Blu Ray is not going to be going away.



One of the first classics in all of film history, this is a heroic and hilarious story of war, love, and victory. It's 80 some odd years old and silent except for a great soundtrack.



About the Blu Ray transfer, let me simply say that it is pretty much perfect. There are understandably a few scratches and flickers here and there, but essentially it is an absolutely flawless representation of how the movie must have originally appeared. It is a great example of how a top notch transfer can revive even the oldest of films. If you've seen this before or even own a DVD copy, let me assure you the Blu upgrade is worth it. You haven't truly experienced it until you've seen it in 1080p. There's depth and detail that past generations couldn't even imagine this film contained.



Overall, 5 stars for the movie and 5 stars for this blu ray! Any doubters suspicious of Blu, or any doubters that older movies can't benefit from the technology are simply proven wrong with this release. Bring on more classics like this, it's like enjoying them for the first time again!

This set is amazing. I've been looking for a set with a cryptex for a long time, but found nothing but ripoffs. They easily ask up to 80 euro's for a set or even 50 euro's for a cryptex alone. Now way I was going to pay that much for a dvd with cryptex. Now the set is with the movie on blu ray and it's just $ 34,95. That's about 28 euro's. In my country the blu ray alone costs more than that. Thanks to amazon for shipping worldwide and letting everyone enjoy these great bargains.



By the way:

The blu ray is region free, and if you're worried about import/customs costs I found a way to avoid them. I shipped the item to my job address. It was delivered by DHL with no costs what so ever. It wasn't a fluke, because last week I ordered 2 blu rays with a total over the allowed amound (allowed as in more than the amound gets charged with additional costs) and received them again without costs.

I think it should be noted that this movie is most definitely not out there for its cinematic value. It's low budget and built on volunteers so it's bound to be a bit on the cheesy side.



However, the message in this is very powerful. The idea is simple enough: love is not a feeling; it is an action. A marriage must learn to brave storms, both of a personal nature and of an external one, if it is ever going to survive at all.



Honestly, I don't think I would have held out as long as this guy's wife did. The computer smashing would have been the proof to me that he was for real. But I can understand why she would have held out longer thanks to the advice and goading of her "friends". There's a little interesting alternate meaning to this - beware of the friend that gives too much advice about your personal life without being asked.



My husband and I both learned a lot from this movie. Despite the poor budget the story itself was very engaging. We both cried at some parts and laughed at others. We are both so totally psyched now to read The Love Dare for ourselves. This movie is a great preparation tool for the book if the book is anything like it is in the movie.



I highly recommend this to any struggling couple.

I've loved this movie since I was a kid and so I was stoked when I saw it was coming to BD. I just got it today and put it into the PS3. The movie's still as great as ever, both picture and audio. However the subtitles for the movie are horribly inaccurate. As a Cantonese speaker it feels as if the people the wrote the subtitles watched the movie on mute and were just guessing at what the actors were saying. So while I could get along fine with Chinese audio alone, I depend on the subtitles for the Japanese parts. Since the Chinese parts were so off I can only assume that the Japanese parts may well be too. I'm sure the subs would probably convey a cogent story, but just know that it may not be exactly the one the director intended it to. If it weren't for this I'd probably give it a 5 but since the subtitles are probably needed for the viewers who don't understand both Chinese and Japanese, 3 stars.

Volume II of Season One of Masters of Horror contains three of the best episodes: Jenifer, Sick Girl, and Deer Woman. All three make for extremely entertaining viewing, even more so in the Blu-ray format. The quandary these Blu-ray releases presents to the collector is that the extras included on the original DVD releases, with the exception of audio commentaries, are not included. Typically I would say go with the better picture and sound quality, because extras are generally not good for more than one viewing. In this case, however, there is a significant omission: Dario Argento's Jenifer was the only episode to have footage censored at some stage of the production process, and while it only amounts to a few seconds, that footage plus the other Argento extras do represent a significant loss, given his stature as a filmmaker. That said, the audio commentaries for Jenifer and Sick Girl are quite good; Deer Woman's commentary suffers from John Landis' absence. Argento enthusiasts may want to keep their original copy of Jenifer if they purchase disc, so, recommended with caution.

THE READER in the form of Bernard Schlink's masterful book made an emotional impact on those who read it. And for once the book to film version holds nearly as much agony and beauty as the original. The screenplay is by David Hare (whose transformation of 'The Hours' was so worthy) and it captures not only the dialogue of Schlink's novel but fills in the silences with well-constructed added commentary. Stephen Daldry ('The Hours', 'Billy Elliot') directs with great sensitivity to not only the narrative story but to the myriad metaphors that fill the quiet spaces in both the novel and the film.



Michael Berg (David Kross, a significant discovery!) lives in Berlin, falls ill with Scarlet Fever, and is given shelter from the rain and cold by a stern appearing Hanna (Kate Winslet). When Michael recovers from his illness he returns to Hanna's flat to thank her for her kindness and there begins a strange and beautiful love affair between a virginal shy lad and an older but obviously emotionally flat yet needy woman. Despite Michael's family's disdain for his absences away from home, Michael surrenders himself to the passion of love and Hanna softens as she pleads for Michael to read to her. Reading and sex become exchanges for this rare couple until Hanna disappears. Michael discovers her some ears later when Hanna is on trial for war crimes (she had been a guard in the concentration camps). Hanna allows her guilt to override reality in confessing she had been the one who had written the orders for the extermination of Jews - this despite the fact that Hanna is illiterate, a fact known only to Michael.



While Hanna is imprisoned Michael (now Ralph Fiennes) records his reading of books to send to Hanna and during Hanna's twenty years of confinement she learns to read and write because of Michael's efforts and gifts. Once Hanna is scheduled to be released from prison and the prison matron convinces Michael to be in charge of the aging Hanna, the story takes turns and the ending is so gently painful that sharing it would ruin the impact for those who have neither read the book nor seen the film.



Winslet, Kross, and Fiennes are excellent in these very difficult roles. Their performances are enhanced with the supporting cast that includes special cameos by Lena Olin and Bruno Ganz and some other fine German actors. The mood of the film is gray except of the isolated moments of bliss Michael and Hanna share and the atmosphere is well balanced by the musical score of Nico Muhly. This is a film worth viewing repeatedly, there are that many layers of meaning to glean from this cinematic triumph. Grady Harp, February 10
