** Waterworld Blu ray

Waterworld is one of those movies you kinda had to be there to fully unappreciate. Think of it is the inherent opposite of James Cameron's scifi smash Avatar. I'm convinced that viewers who weren't lining up in theaters (or in my case killing the battery of their Chevy Blazer at the drive-in) in 1995 in effort to see what all the negative hype was about will likely breeze through this film with a shrug of the shoulders and a quote to the effect of "it wasn't too bad."

And in fact that's really an honest assessment of the film as a whole. There's nothing too memorable about the experience but nothing overly offensive either. It isn't until you discover that it had, at the time anyway, the most expensive Hollywood production cost recorded ($200 million budget, a record it would hold for two years until Cameron's Titanic came along), required construction of a 1,000 ton floating set, demanded a script that underwent 36 drafts from six different writers, was shut down 3 times due to weather threats, had its director (Kevin Reynolds) walk off with only two-weeks of shooting to go, and cost lead star Kevin Costner 22-million of his own dollars to complete, does one finally start to realize that the end result is a little more than lackluster.

The premise of this one, in fact one of very few science fiction blockbusters that really won't suffer too greatly by having its entire plot reduced to two or three sentences, is as follows: Waterworld takes place in an undetermined future date right here on earth and follows the exploits of Kevin Costner as the Mariner, a sailing individualist who, thanks to evolution, has sprouted gills and webbed feet, as he navigates the endless ocean that is Earth after the melting of the polar ice caps.

Pursued by a band of baddies calling themselves The Smokers (due to their reliance on the ancient internal combustion engine in their boats and jet-skis presumably), our hero finds himself captured and caged only to be freed by Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and enlisted to help her and a mysterious young girl (Tina Majorino) escape Smoker suppression once and for all.

So there you have it; a modern day masterpiece of a plot? Well not exactly, but it is and was passable enough as a sort of aquatic variation of "The Road Warrior", again the suspicion (and ensuing failed expectations) not becoming a factor until you realize the behind the scenes drama and bottomless pockets the film required to make.

One can't help but wonder if Costner and company had waited just a few more years to make this failed epic, the widespread use of computer generated imaging wouldn't have slashed the budget to a mere fraction of what it ended up costing. There is little doubt that much of the elaborate floating set and battle sequences could have been done in a green-screened lagoon behind the studio parking lot today.

The pacing of the film (which runs 136-minutes in the theatrical release/ 176-minutes in the director's cut) is actually bogged down by the odd combination of unchanging background (after all, there is little variation to behold on an endless ocean), and several chronological sequences that offer no spoken dialog. Surely done in attempt to more accurately portray the solitude and hopelessness being one of few wanderers left on the planet entails, the effort here is unfortunately more tedious and monotonous than artistically appealing. Though slightly longer, the Extended Edition manages to address these complaints by piecing together a few key scenes and adding some footage that was sliced for time constraints in the theatrical version. Sadly though, even this release is a compromise in the view of many fans as the Extended Edition trades bonus material in favor of the cussing, violence, and some of the partial nudity in the original picture (as it is a direct DVD release of the made-for-television ABC broadcast and not the highly sought-after Director's Cut). Apparently the potential Waterworld customer has to choose which version they'll purchase based on their priorities.

The action sequences are perhaps the first real signs of the film's massive budget with some high-speed, high seas chases complete with big fiery explosions. The ending, while typical and slightly cliché, works pretty well here and is rewarding in a popcorn flick kind of way.

In all the best way to summarize Waterworld, even fifteen years after the fact, is probably to shrug the shoulders and say, "it isn't too bad". Both DVD versions of the film work well enough in their weird way and may even make for a decent rental next time you're filling up your online queue. It's an enjoyable enough science fiction piece so long as you avoid researching the drama and money that went into making it happen. For that reason alone, I suggest you navigate away from my review immediately.

And to the guy parked next to me at the Angola Drive-In that night back in 1995 who happened to have a set of jumper cables at the ready, my sincere gratitude.

$ Poison Ivy 4 The Secret Society Blu ray

The fourth installment in the poison ivy series, although it has little in common with the previous aside from name.

The main protagonist is Danielle "Daisy" Brooks played by Miriam Mcdonald, better known as Emma Nelson on Degrassi: the Next Generation. While the main antagonist is Azalea Berges best known as Icebook from the movie Little Giants. Yes they've both matured nicely.

There is only two essential male characters, Professor Andrew Graves and his son Blake Graves.

The basis plot is about how simple farm girl Daisy who is a straight A student gets a scholarship to a prodigious academy leaving behind her simple farm life and simple farm boyfriend.

Meanwhile Azela who is a high ranking member of the exclusive Ivys, essentially an all female mafia, is trying to get an internship with the academy. She is willing to do anything to get it even going as far as sleeping with Blake just to find out if there is any competition.

When she finds out Daisy got it she has her initiated into the society in order to take control of her. It's not long before Daisy realizes that she's a pawn in a much bigger game. I don't won't to spoil it, but the ending leaves much to be desired.

The character of Daisy is not well fleshed out. Very little is known about her and the death of her parents. Also at the beginning she has a boyfriend and yet she has no problem sleeping with Blake and on the first date. Even worse she's back with her boyfriend at the end.

Azela character is not well made out either, I mean sleeping with a guy just to get information.

Neither of the main characters plays much of a part, Blake is merely a plot device after his night with Daisy, and the professor plays an even less significant role.

There was also plenty of lose ends, what happened to the society, what about Daisy and Blake, what about Azela and Elizbeth, ordinarily this would mean sequel but most likely if there is another movie it will be with completely different characters and none of this will be acknowledged.

And if you didn't already know the DVD has five minutes of extra, explicit footage. Both Miriam and Shawna go completely topless in this:

The explicit scenes are as follows:

      Shawna:

While making out with Blake she has her top removed to reveal her breasts, followed by a scene of having her breasts sucked and dry humping.

In order to seduce her professor Azela shows up in black lingerie before pulling her top down to reveal her breasts, followed by a scene similar to the first.

      Miriam:

While making out with a guy she removes her dress and bra to reveal a full frontal shot of her breasts, followed by a few side shots of her breasts.

At the initiation ceremony, she along with two other girls has their robes removed to reveal a brief shot of her breasts, they are all then lie down and given a tattoo, and their breasts can all be seen again when they rise.

In addition she has two lesser explicit scenes, in one she is seen in her underwear and in the other she is seen wearing black lingerie.

Miriam seemed far less enthusiastic about being topless than Shawna. Both times Miriam is topless it is only brief, while Shawna's scenes last for over a minute, Shawna really seemed to be getting into it as well, guarantee this won't be her last time doing nudity

I personally believe that the nudity is merely a ruse to sell DVDs, really five minutes of nudity is no reason to buy a DVD. However if you are a fan of Miriam or Shawna or erotic thrillers in general, then you can give it a try.

      -$- Deadline Blu ray

For one thing, this must have been one of Brittany Murphy's last movies (and in knowing that, she appears to be very ill.) There is a memorable scene where she looks through a glass door and pauses for a moment in closing it, and there is just this very final, haunting look on her face. If you like spooky, morbid, suspenseful thrillers that are more about making you jump than grossing you out with blood and gore, you will love this movie! An author, Alice goes to stay at an old house for one week to write. Her friend, Rebecca drives Alice to the house and takes the car back with her. Later, Rebecca lets Alice know that her violent ex-boyfriend, Ben is out of jail and may be looking for her. Alice begins hearing noises in the house and comes across some videotapes in the attic of a disturbed couple (Lucy and David.) She becomes absorbed in their story. When she finds the last tape and Rebecca tells her that Lucy and David were never found and are considered missing, Alice suddenly realizes that one of them could be in the house. The ending is a bunch of twists and turns that are open to interpretation. Is this all in Alice's mind or did someone (other than Ben) try to kill her? Lucy's story and Alice's parallel each other so closely. Did Alice just create the very real characters of David and Lucy for her next novel? Rebecca and the audience are left wondering. This type of movie reminded me a lot of What Lies Beneath. But the ending is more in the style of Alfred Hitchcock. The background music is exceptional and really pulls you into the story.

        *$* Top Gun Blu ray

Well, the dialogue is down right corny and the actual "in cockpit" footage isn't all that great given the fact that this is supposed to be about pilots and their machines, the fact of the matter is, if you loved Top Gun when it first took flight back in the 80's it's all the more reason to see this in HiDef. The sound track in any set up outside of plain stereo is great and the sounds of the jet engines swooshing by you from front to back and left to right and so on is just booming. I could do without the sausage fest of the volleyball scene but that was the hook for the female crowd. I could do with more flight scenes and fight footage but I didn't write the script. The videos of the songs are a nice inclusion, too.

#@: Terminator 2 Six Disc Limited Edition Set Endoskull Bust Blu ray

Watch this movie if you want to live.

Terminator 2 is a great sequel! John Connor is a little punk with a juvey record with the LAPD. His foster parents aren't much better. While he is taking joy rides and robbing ATMs, two Terminators arrive from the future. One, the Arnold Schwarzenegger model, is there to protect John from the second one, the T-1000, made of liquid metal and can form any shape.

The movie is mostly chase scene, really. The unreal truck scene where this huge rig is flying off a bridge into the LA sewers. Lots of car accidents ensue as John Connor dodges him.

The scenes where people get terminated are especially gruesome: John's foster father gets sliced through the head while drinking from a milk carton. Not a pretty sight. Or when a security guard says it's his lucky day before getting skewered in the eyeball. Yuk.

It does not take Sarah Connor long to learn that the Arnold model is her pal, as they ride through the streets of LA being chased by the T-1000.

Family scenes are a bit intense as well: After John gets his mom out, thinking he just saved her life, she yells at him how stupid he was for doing that and that he's much more important than she is. *sniff*

Another cool scene when they take the CPU out of Arnold's head. She wants to smash it! John says no, and 'if I'm supposed to be this great military leader, why not listen to some of my ideas once in a while?' The dialogue is pretty good, though chain smoker Linda Hamilton does go a bit splooie sometimes -- probably due to her stay at the spin bin.

Funny scenes: John trying to teach Arnold to lighten up! Hasta La Vista, Baby. And how about that snake farm?

Chilling scenes: Children playing in a playground laughing just before a nuclear fireball.

And of course the search for Dyson, the inventor of the cyber chip that starts Skynet (which he also got from the pieces of Terminator from film no. 1).

The film is full of action and suspense, some humorous interludes and overall a fun, occasionally gory, sci-fi film.

            Highly recommended.

Back in gradeschool there was a wonderful day when we were shown "Powers of Ten". It was very fast, and very short, but one of the most jam-packed mind-expanding experiences available. In short, a math concept (the logarithm) is used zooming out, and then in, to give you a tour from wide astronomy to partical physics. Well let me tell how far we've come...

Some of the graphics in this 1996 feature were rendered by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). That means significant supercomputing, programming, and visualization research went into our best scientific understanding of how galaxies cluster, at the farthest scale of the universe, and you get to fly around through it in this video. But of course it's the whole trip out there (and back), that's so appealing.

I have to admit i've only seen this 2008 rerelease in a planetarium. I doubt the same visual shock will fit in widescreen, but even if the movie loses half its visual effect, the sense of wonder - the opportunity to think big (and small) - will remain.

BTW, the original "Powers of Ten" is by Charles and Ray Eames, 1977. There's a version reproduced with permission on YouTube, and since it's only 9 minutes long, you can get a taste of the theme quickly, for free. Comparing versions, we have added two powers of ten to our knowledge since then, and the graphics are way better.

Twister is improbable. Twister is maniacal. It's a thrill ride that's guaranteed to hold your interest from beginning to end. And how cool is it that Van Halen's Humans Being made it into the soundtrack? It's a great tornado-chase song.

I love Twister. I'm into the whole midwest vibe it so effectively creates. I love Helen Hunt. If Twister was a bad movie, I think I'd still watch it just to see her. I love the effects - they are extremely effective!

Some of the scripting is a bit cheesy, to be sure.

For instance, the campy melodrama behind the following scene is just so yeesh:

Joey: [Discussing at Meg's on the tornadoes they have seen so far] No, that was a good size twister. What was it, an F3?

                  Bill: Solid F2.

Melissa: See, now you have lost me again.

Bill: It's the Fujita scale. It measures a tornado's intensity by how much it eats.

                  Melissa: Eats?

                  Bill: Destroys.

Laurence: That one we encountered back there was a strong F2, possibly an F3.

Beltzer: Maybe we'll see some 4's.

                  Haynes: That would be sweet!

Bill: 4 is good. 4 will relocate your house very efficiently.

                  Melissa: Is there an F5?

                  [Everyone goes dead silent]

Melissa: What would that be like?

Jason 'Preacher' Rowe: The Finger of God.

Melissa: None of you has ever seen an F5?

                  Bill: ...Just one of us.

                  [Looks upstairs, indicating Jo]

And speaking of cheesy, I don't like Bill Paxton as the leading man in this. There's something overly contrived about him, almost to the point of being plastic. But the other characters are fairly interesting.

Especially, of course, Helen Hunt. :-)

                  $ Predator Blu ray

Here's m thoughts on this movie: it's "The Most Dangerous Game"... but with a masked alien instead of a creepy guy with a satanic goatee. And that basically sums up this gory, suspenseful sci-fi thriller. which starts off as your usual macho BOOMBOOMfest but quickly mutates into something far creepier once the soldiers realize that there's an alien stalking them.

Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and his team have been assigned to rescue a cabinet minister kidnapped by guerillas in Guatemala, which seems like a straightforward mission at first. And the guerillas seem to be an unusually brutal bunch -- while some of the pursuing soldiers have been captured, others have been brutally skilled and left to hang in the trees.

Dutch's team basically blows up the entire guerilla compound and everyone in it, except for one woman (Elpidia Carrillo) that they take prisoner. But on the way back, their numbers start dwindling -- one soldier is dragged away and gutted, and another is shot through the chest with an energy blast. Something far worse than the guerillas is stalking the team through the jungle, and the unknown Predator is determined to kill everyone worth hunting.

The first half of "Predator" is about a military operation with lots of gunfire and explosions, and the second half is a harrowing, blood-spattered chase with the men getting picked off one by one. Yeah, the plot isn't very complex, but it's handled in a very intense manner -- lots of sweat, dirt, grease, jungle foliage and sudden eruptions of blood and firepower.

There are some plot holes, though -- Jim and John Thomas brings up some suspenseful conspiracy stuff about evil CIA agents in league with the guerillas and Russian agents. Then it... just sort of gets forgotten.

Fortunately John McTiernan adds huge bucketfuls of suspense and gory horror along the way. Since the alien is invisible, there's the constant feeling that something horrendous and brutal is lurking in the underbrush, and there are some powerful moment like Billy's final defiant stand or Mac saying farewell to his friend. And the final leg of the movie is a hallucinatory nightmare of waterfalls, fire and one warrior facing off against another.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is... well, "Ahnuld" -- kind of wooden, very muscular, and fairly capable of the whole tough soldier thing. The other characters are sparingly but well-sketched out, such as Dutch's old buddy Carl Weathers, Bill Duke, Shane Black, Sonny Landham, Carillo and Richard Chaves. Jesse Ventura is completely two-dimensional, though -- and I wished Landham's character had shown a bit more dimension beyond "stoic Indian tracker."

"Predator" has some holes and a rather simple plot, but the superb direction and cinematography are pretty darn brilliant. And it might leave you desperately hoping to never have to hike through the jungle, ever.

This is a cute movie about six people trying to make sense out of their love lives by making sense of books by Jane Austen books. As an avid Austen fan, I liked this movie because it tackles a lot of the relationship difficulties that Austen writes about.

$ New Police Story Blu ray

Chan Kwok-wing, the protagonist of "New Police Story," is not (Kevin) Chan Ka-kui, hero of Jackie Chan's Police Story--or so they say. This Chan is older, wiser...and drunker. In short, he's a mess. He's even worse off than Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon: Our second glimpse of him prominently features several adult beverages. A couple of scenes later, he's facedown in an alley. How the mighty have fallen.

Flash back one year: Chan is the hot dog cop stud, foiling grenade-wielding hostage takers and punching out shady businessmen in a scene that's a sort of Police Story Condensed. Shortly thereafter, Joe (Daniel Wu) and his gang of rich-kid criminals rob a bank and then...call the cops. Just when we start to wonder why the bad guys (and girl) want to stage a blatant open-air shootout in the street a la Heat, instead of escaping when they have the chance, we learn that they're some sort of thrillseekers club, competing among themselves to win the biggest share of the bank loot via a point system. Kill higher-value targets (like, say, cops), get more points and more money.

Chan, cocky with previous success, declares on the TV news that he will apprehend the gang within three hours. Joe, however, has other plans, and when Chan's team "infiltrates" the gang's lair, the gang starts picking them off one by one. When Chan is unable to save them (indeed, Joe has cruelly engineered this foregone outcome), he spirals into depression and self-loathing, distancing himself from both the police force and his fiancée, Ho Yee (Charlie Yeung), whose brother was one of the officers Chan lost. Just as Chan hits rock bottom, a young rookie cop (Nicholas Tse) appears to bring him back into the fold.

In stark contrast to the raw quickie HK action movies of the mid-90s like Man Wanted, for example, NPS is very slick. Beautifully lit and shot, NPS features some mostly excellent visual effects and dynamic cinematography. It's not all gritty back alleys and shuttered storefronts; it's shining chrome and glass and neon. HK has never looked better. Despite all the glitter, however, New Police Story is darker and more twisted than any other Police Story film...or any other Jackie Chan movie, for that matter. OK, so even if this isn't the same series, NPS still features numerous references to the original PS series, including a double-decker bus that crashes through a lot of glass.

A solidly entertaining movie, NPS is, nevertheless, not without its annoying little foibles. For one, logic and physics go out the window--or should I say over the ledge?--immediately. The big action set piece in the beginning relies on that most implausible of movie gimmicks: the real-life video game scenario. Meaning that there are lots of intricate traps and setups that depend too much on people being exactly where they need to be. It's great in the movies, but it would never work in real life, because one misstep breaks the whole chain. Also, there's a little too much unnecessary wirework for my taste.

Not surprisingly, with all the neon, chrome and hot English-speaking hipsters, NPS is more than a little reminiscent of Benny Chan's earlier Gen-X Cops (Benny just loves the HK Convention Centre). As much as I enjoyed the fluffy goodness of GXC, however, in the case of NPS I think there's too much Benny and not enough Jackie.

On the plus side, most of the gunfights are nicely restrained, and the police tactics are more realistic than usual. Perhaps my favorite part of the movie, besides Charlie Yeung's overbite, is a fantastic battle in Legoland between Jackie and Andy On, reminiscent of one of my all-time favorite JC fight scenes: the pachinko parlor fight in the mostly otherwise-forgettable Thunderbolt. And there are some very funny bits that don't go over the top with the comedy. The "ending" was a little on the sappy side, but it still got to me, and the epilogue/flashback was even more resonant and touching.

At last, Jackie shows some real range (and a new hairdo, sort of, thank god). He goes from confident and cocky to subdued, tired and weary--and, holy cow, he gets emotional (and I don't mean just angry). Not once, but multiple times. It's different, but different is good.

The supporting players are well cast. Nicholas Tse is quite appealing here--not the lightweight he was in Gen-X Cops. At first I would have preferred Stephen Fung, but Tse won me over. (There is actually a cameo by Fung in the deleted scenes.) He even gets to play his role for some laughs, which was enjoyable.

The irresistible Charlie Yeung's Ho Yee takes the place of Maggie Cheung's longsuffering May and brings some heart and humor to a role that could have been spectacularly unrewarding. On the other side of the female equation is Charlene Choi, who has obviously discovered the secret of eternal youth. How else to explain why she still appears to be 12 years old? For some gravitas, there's Yu Rong-guang doing his badass straight-arrow cop schtick. A Mandarin speaker, Yu has here been dubbed into Cantonese--but with a distractingly deep voice (I kept thinking of Sonny Chiba in The Storm Riders).

The standout performer here, hands down, is Daniel Wu. He was merely serviceable in GXC, and I didn't dig him in Purple Storm, but after seeing him in NPS, I have a new respect for him as (and I don't use this term lightly) an actor. As the quietly sinister tortured son-slash-criminal mastermind, Wu digs deep and puts it out there. Excellent job, sir.

I wouldn't bet that this will be the last of the Police Story movies, New or otherwise, but if it is, it serves as a fitting bookend. In any case, it's certainly not the last major HK outing we'll see from Jackie Chan. That I'd bet on. Hey, if Robert Redford is still making action-type movies at his advanced age, Jackie can certainly be making them well into his hundreds. And I almost hope he does.

#*# Dido and Aeneas Blu ray

Vergil called his epic poem THE AENEID, and it's all about how Aeneas the Trojan fled from his destroyed city, faced numerous dangers and ultimately landed in Latium to plant there the Roman race. One episode, in Book Four (of Twelve) is a brief stop in Carthage for a one-night stand (in a cave, during a storm) with Dido, the foundress of the city. The episode is fraught with nuance, since Rome would eventually destroy Carthage. Aeneas himself is pure legend, but Dido is based on a historical personage, the princess Elissa, who fled Phoenicia after the death of her father and went to North Africa to found Carthage.

Purcell called his opera DIDO AND AENEAS -- Dido first, because it's all about Dido, whose grief for her father is the starting point of the opera, and whose suicide is the end of it. This production, however, has a spoken prologue about Echo and Narcissus, which is quite funny, but hardly sets the tone for Dido's grief in the opening scene. The accompanying booklet tells something about it, but as long as there was fated to be a spoken prologue, it might as well have introduced this opera instead of some other one. In fact, a little something about where Aeneas came from wouldn't have been a bad idea, since his tragic past and portentous future are less well known to audiences today than in Purcell's time.

The children stomping about the stage both during the prologue and during the opera itself are cute for about a split second. Purcell probably thought, like everyone else of his time, that children should be seen and not heard. The Phoenicians and Carthaginians had a horrendous practice of child sacrifice, which the Hebrews and Romans considered abominable, but at the half-hour point of the production had there been a clip inserted of the temple of Moloch scene from the silent film CABIRIA, it might have provided some comic relief. Here the Queen herself is sacrificed, along with Purcell and his music, instead of the children.

Several times the children scream beautifully, reminding one of the Nibelungen in Das Rheingold. Where is Alberich when one needs him?

The children are not the only ones creating stage noises during all the orchestral portions. The adults do a moderate amount of stomping as well. Horror vacui is one thing, but the production seems to be characterized by horror musicae. William Christie and Les Arts Florissants are major exponents of baroque music, and Purcell is considered the greatest British composer of all time. So why the disrespect?

I cannot compare this with the other blu-ray production, which I have not seen. After my friend watched and I endured this blu-ray, we both watched with pleasure the SD-DVD of the film version with Maria Ewing. The level of singing is better on that one, and the acting more serious, and the costumes and scenery more appropriate. (Bare stage is the polar opposite of the baroque aesthetic.) The sorceress in that production is filled with bile and seems dangerous enough to cause real trouble; in this one, she is comic figure hardly competent to manage any scenarii of national importance, like the fall of Carthage or the rise of Rome. She has more in common with Wagner's Kundry than with Vergil's Juno.

One final complaint: one pays $30-$40 for only a little over sixty minutes of blu-ray here, counting the 23-minute interview. Even if this Dido had been superior to the original, the price-per-minute is pretty steep. A friend of mine won't buy a CD with fewer than 60 minutes of playing time. Purcell has a lot of other music, and William Christie has recorded a lot of it. The person who is drawn to DIDO AND AENEAS would no doubt have been enthused by the addition of some high-resolution audio recordings of other Purcell works, such as the wonderful early FANTAZIAS, or some of the theatrical music from other productions such as DIOCLESIAN. I hate to post negative reviews, but this package offers way less than half the material that can fit on a blu-ray, and what is there is way less than half what the material itself deserves.

-$- Planet of the Apes Blu ray

I guess that you'd have to be skeptical of movie that has as many 1 and 2 star reviews as it does 4 and 5 star reviews. But in my opinion, Tim Burton's 2001 remake of the classic 1968 version of Planet of the Apes was a victim of a lot of unjust criticism.

Most of the criticism is from preservationists that just don't like their classics tampered with. To them I say fair enough, but I'm also here to say that as much as I loved the original movie that spawned 4 sequels, a television series and an animated TV series, I liked Tim Burton's version the best. Burton's film explained how it could all be possible better than the original while at the same time adhered to the spirit of Pierre Boulle's original novel. Sure Burton took some liberties of his own too, but he also paid honorable tribute to the '68 sci-fi classic in several scenes.

I think that a lot of criticism was also created by the whole time warp thing too. Jumping back and forth in time can be a difficult thing to pull off; it can be very confusing. And it is indeed confusing in Burton's remake. But ultimately it all adds up and is very cool when you finally "get it".

Marky Mark Wahlberg also received some pans for his performance, but I thought he was great. And the apes, most notably Helena Bonham Carter, Tim Roth, Michael Clarke Duncan & Paul Giamatti, all looked great; they were scary, amusing and the acting was excellent. The movie is action packed and thoroughly entertaining through and through. Like I said earlier, I was certainly a fan of the original, but Burton's movie to me was less of a remake of the 1968 film and more of a better adaptation of Boulle's 1963 novel.

I bought this movie once on DVD already all the way back in 2001; but I wouldn't hesitate to give this a try on Blu Ray and I recommend that you do too...especially if you've never seen the movie.

TO KILL A KING is an interesting film about a troubled relationship between two powerful men. I agree with those reviewers who highlight this aspect of the film because it truly is more of a character piece than a historical drama. My only problem with the film is its pacing. It drags in places and urges one to shut it off. But don't. It's definitely worth a watch.

You totally feel for the brother who had to risk his life in Afghanistan -- even when he is forced to commit an unspeakable crime to save his life. You also feel for the brother who has just got out of jail and for the wife who is left behind to take care of small children. And most of all you really feel for the daughter who feels neglected and less loved than her sister.

I loved the fact that I thought the wife was going to have an affair with her brother-in-law, but no such thing takes place. Threw me for a loop.

This film was actually much better than I thought it would be. Not something I would watch again and again, but a good expose of the post traumatic stress disorder that has impacted so many returning soldiers, and their families.

                                  !! Apocalypto Blu ray

"Apocalypto" should have been more controversial than Mel Gibson's other traditionalist classic "Passion of the Christ". That it was not is a clue as to who holds real political sway in our culture. In any event, this movie is fine addition to Gibson's string of writer/directorial classics, making Gibson the top writer/director of our age.

Although violent and not very complex in plot, "Apocalyto" stands as a monument of originality in the wasteland of modern American cinema. To make a hero out of a small jungle tribe tyranized by the Maya was truly a unique stroke that stands apart in the entire Hollywood oeurve. To portray these people as they really were, that they had their own very dark side, was a startling act of bravery in our postmodern culture, which seldom portrays any but white Europeans, usually males, as villains and oppressors. The great civilizations of pre-Columbian Mexico and Central America had vices so horrific that history should regard the Conquistadores as liberators rather than the gold-crazed pillagers that have become paradigmatic in our youths' history texts. Sure, they had cultural achievements to compare with those of the Egyptians, but the "Egyptians never practised human sacrifice", according to Herodotus.

Secondly, an impressive amount of cinematic talent was necessary to mold a riveting adventure out of an alien culture, using strictly unknown foreign actors. Many a fine premise has been ruined by poor execution, but not so "Apocalypto". There is vivid character development despite the limitations imposed by subtitles. The visuals are a stunning recreation of how the Mayan civilizations probably appeared. The entertaining series of deus ex machinas that save the hero, Jaguar Paw, as he is pursued by blood thirsty Mayans, culminating with the masterful suprise ending, driving home the message of the film, were inspired.

All in all, "Apocalypto" is an original, well executed movie, somewhat limited by its subject matter and excessive gore, which serve the purpose of the film, but don't watch it over dinner!

                                  ** Beowulf Grendel Blu ray

There's something to be said for making a movie by placing real actors and real objects in front of a real camera with real film loaded in it. In this respect, "Beowulf and Grendel" easily exceeds Robert Zemeckis's largely CGI "Beowulf". If nothing else, Hrothgar is a believable Danish ruler, rather than a vinyl Stinky Pete, sans pickaxe.

The script -- which has a great deal of intentional humor -- never forgets that "Beowulf" is an Anglo-Saxon tale, and peppers the dialog with F-bombs and S-bombs -- not to mention the C word. Selma (a character not in the original tale) asks Beowulf why he hasn't made a snatch for her c---. Despite this, there is almost no sex -- the principal sex scene being Grendel ravishing Selma. (Yes.)

Which brings us to the "reworking" of the original tale. The Zemeckis version is tolerably close, but "B&G" strays far afield, with Grendel now the revenging victim of the Danes' violence. Still, as silly as it all is, the overall /effect/ is not half so silly as the Zemeckis film, which is why I've given it 3 stars. The Blu-ray transfer is beautiful, and allows one to savor the magnificent cinematography. Not to mention the bearded, long-haired eye-candy. Beowoof!

Performances are generally okay, with the notable exception of Sarah Polley. She was a wonderful child actress ("Baron Munchausen"), but her "performance" here is wooden and amateurish beyond belief (and beneath contempt) -- it wouldn't be acceptable in a high-school play.

Now that Gerard Butler has played the king of Sparta, Atilla, and Beowulf, perhaps it's time he assayed Gilgamesh. One problem, though -- Gilgamesh and Enkidu start off as woman lovers, but when they meet each other... well . It's hard to figure how "The Epic of Gilgamesh" could be "reimagined" to cover up /that/.

*$* Stargate The Ark of Truth Blu ray

I'm a fan of Stargate, and a HUGE fan of seasons 9 and 10. Obviously I had high expectations for this, but unfortunately they weren't met at ALL. The writing was just terrible. I mean it would be okay for a decent action movie, but by Stargate standards it was garbage.

Everything was stilted, things (like the Ori, the Priors, the Orisi) that were scary as hell in the series were kind of boring and/or goofy seeming in this. The wonderful chemistry between the cast felt completely absent. Vala and Sam barely have a part-Sam's reduced to a handful of tech lines, Vala has to spew a few paragraphs of boring exposition (she's an amazing actor...but how do you strike the write tone for that character while reading...paragraphs of boring exposition?) The only one who really gets a decent amount of screen time is Cam.

We have a generic, unbelievable bureaucrat, like they're saying "hey, remember those awful bureaucrats we've seen on Stargate? He's like them!" We have a shift of loyalties that comes out of the blue, and doesn't seem to have any connection at all to how the character was ALWAYS portrayed.

Heck, even the 'dialing the gate' scene was done 1000x better at the end of "Unending".

I'm really not sure how to rate this. I didn't hate it, but it's a huge disappointment, and doesn't do the series justice at all. To the people who seem to have only watched this movie and are judging the series by that-start at the beginning, or at the beginning of season 9. I don't regret seeing it, and any fan of the series like me is going to have to...but wow...I'd love to know what went wrong.

!$ Underworld Trilogy Underworld Underworld Evolution Underworld Rise of the Lycans Blu ray

This if for the blu-ray trilogy. I would give this set 3.5 stars, but my phone's only letting me do whole stars...

I've come to appreciate these films more over time; especially after seeing previews of Twilight. The art direction & costumes are superb. The story in the 3rd film, Rise of the Lycans, is by far my favorite, even without Kate Beckinsale; it feels complete, important & epic. Bill Nighy does a great job, and I'm to the point where I'm not as bothered by Michael Sheen's bulging-eye business. All of the films do a good job setting up and executing the action sequences. Even if they are a bit predictable, it's fun to watch it play out, and to wait for the other shoe to drop (or half a head).

Rise of the Lycans is also the best looking of the 3 on blu-ray; the costumes are the most ornate of the series, and I'm guessing it was shot 100% digital; the other 2 movies are clear but not quite as sharp. All of the films have grain, either due to the low lighting, or intentional effect; doesn't bother me.

I actually exchanged this set, due to a significant hang-up in Lycan's interactive menu. The disc's laminant was too thin, and the digital etchings were exposed to open air (not ideal). As it turned out, the lamination was not the issue; my new disc looked like it was manufactured correctly, but still got hung up. I researched it online and found out I had to upgrade my blu-ray player's firmware. I have an older player - a Samsung BD-P1500. Once I updated the firmware, the hang-up was gone.

I'd recommend this series to anyone who likes Lord of the Rings, or blood-soaked historical epics in general.

A blu-ray collection of these films should be cause for excitement - yet even when taking into account Amazon's generous discount on this set - the packaging must be be one of the cheapest, flimsy and thoughtlessly conceived on the format. Every expense seems to have been spared. If your going to market Blu-ray on its high spec credentials - some effort in all departments might be an idea. Such is the paucity of the packaging here it would barely survive liberation from the shrinkwrap.

$ The Matrix 10th Anniversary Edition Blu ray

This is one of the types of movies that looks best in Blu-ray. The transfer to Blu-ray was great, and I don't think you will be disappointed. I got the 10th Anniversary Edition. The case is basically a Blu-ray sized book with a slot in the back for the blu-ray disk. It has about 40 pages of text and pictures of/about the movie, the actors, directors, etc. I never pay extra for special editions, but I really liked this one. It was a landmark movie, and I enjoy having this memento of it. There is only one disk, but as it is blu-ray, it has the extras on it. I highly recommend this version of the movie, AND the case is the same size as my other blu-ray movies!
