I didn't go into this movie expecting much considering the cover and it seemed the same as a million other ghost movies I have seen in the past 10 years. Throughout viewing this movie I was dissappointed and entralled.



Brittany Murphy plays as a screenwriter who has just moved into a creepy, old mansion to complete her new script. The movie is filled with odd sounds and bumps in the night, which was glorified in the original Shirley Jackson classic, "The Haunting".



About less than midway in the film Murphy finds a collection of home videos of the previous owners. Of course she watches her find and becomes obsessed. On tape is the documentation of a disgruntled married couple, played by Thora Birch and Marc Blucas. Quickly, she discovers there are frightening similarities between Thora and herself. Brittany discovers later that Thora is murdered and her ghost still haunts the estate.



At first, this movie moves like an Asian horror film, its creepy and almost poetic with its style, however, theres only one problem. There is a scene where Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata is playing, Murphy follows the music and sees dead Thora Birch playing the piano, instead of Birch slowly turning to face Murphy the scene becomes loud and obnoxious with poor cgi effects. The result was a cheap scare that lacked a jump. In this one specific scene I have listed two facts that annoyed me. 1. The director went for a poor scare tactic vs. the ghost slowly turning and facing Murphy. 2. PLEASE FORGET CGI WHEN SOMETHING IS SIMPLE *as in Thora's deathly makeup* BE CREATIVE AND USE OLD SCHOOL EFECTS! If Dick Smith could shock millions with makeup and latex what is stopping Hollywood now?



Instead of giving up on the movie, I watched it till the end and the twist was redeeming. I snagged this in the $5 bend at Walmart and feel it was worth that amount of money. This movie is rated R, which I believe is a bogus rating, this is clearly no worse than a PG-13 rated film. This movie is without gore or any major or minor scare factors, but it is an interesting watch. Out of a scale of 1 to 10, I rate it a 6 1/2. The only thing that prevented the movie from reaching a higher number is the Moonlight Sonata scene that frustrated me.

I'm not going to give this DC Title a glowing review. I'm a real fan of animation, but I think that this one really missed its mark. I'm a big fan of animation --you can see my other reviews and tell that for yourself. The voice acting was great, and the animation was excellent as well. The things that truly bothered me about this movie is that it felt like they were trying to do two stories at once and falling short. The Crime Syndicate story OR Crisis on Infinite Earths. Pick one and stick with it. After 30 years of reading DC comics, it just feels like the studios are really thinking too small when it comes to animated features. Each of these stories in their own right need to be told, but as they were written, not making things up and borrowing things from this story or the other.



That's what this feels like. I will say this --if I'd never read comics as a kid, then the movie wouldn't have bothered me at all. So if you're not a serious comic book fan, watch away. Even if you are a comic book fan, if you put aside your fanboyness for a little while, it was an entertaining movie. But after its over, I felt cheated of the story that I remember reading. I honestly wish that DC would stop letting studios re-write stories just to suit the production and make them stay true to the original plot. I don't mind it when they change things for the sake of different time periods like slang or dialog, but come on. There's a reason the story was popular enough to make into a movie --so stop messing with it!



That's really all I have to say. Again, if you're buying this for your kid, then by all means --I don't think they'll be disappointed. But if you're a DC aficionado like me, then you might want to skip this one if plot deviations upset you.

I am sure the movie description written for the product is better than anything I could ever write, so I will just leave it as this is a good movie that I got a great deal on the Blu-Ray.

p.s.- I have watched this movie about 50-60 times with my daughter and it is still pretty funny.

I'm not going to talk about the movie at all, this review is mainly for the quality of the blu ray version. I have watched this movie numerous times on standard DVD, the picture of the blue ray has more sharpness than the SDVD, the brighter colors are more vibrant, but the darker colors, and especially the blacks are kind of smudgy in places. Sound is excellent on the blu ray. If you're trying to decide between the two versions for your initial purchase, buy the blu ray. But I would hesitate to upgrade to the blu ray if you already own the SDVD unless you're a big fan of the movie.

The Stage setting is elaborate enough for the opera. The sound is perfect. I have to admit that I needed to use the sub-tittles as I am not that familiar with the words or story yet.



I could see where at first one may not think that Marco as a beginning presents as Calaf. However, it does not take long for him to move into the part and not ham it up.



This is Puccini's final opera and I am impressed that he never lost steam. The story seems at first a conglomeration of myths. However it is well rounded and becomes a myth if its own. A nameless prince falls for a mysterious Chinese princes, Turandot (Maria Guleghina.) she smells good but has a nasty attitude. If you are inclined to marry her, you must first answer three questions. If you get them wrong, you will be beheaded.



The prince is ignorant of the fact the he is already loved. The princes did not intend to fulfill any promise. In addition, the bulk of the opera is songs sung about intentions.



I was afraid the then highpoint of the opera would be the song Nessun dorma! and the rest would be filler. I was wrong it is captivating from the beginning to end. Someone may thing that it was quickly rapped up. However, it was actually pretty much dictated by the speech from the soon to be dispatched Liù (Alexia Voulgaridou - soprano) were she dictates the future.



I can listen to Alexia Voulgaridou signore Ascolta repeatedly.

Ok, I have to admit that when I first saw this movie I kept comparing it to the book. And it was making me mad that they changed things, but on watching it again I began to appreciate what they did with the film in order to convey some of the same things that were in the book. No movie can exactly follow the book. That being said, I really enjoyed the movie and have watched it several times. I only first started reading the books in January and am almost done with the whole series for the second time now. If you like the movie and haven't read the books, then you will love the books.

This "deluxe re-release" is in fact a rip-off of the highest order.



The original trailers for the film are entirely absent and the documentary is rather more of an homage to Bakshi then any sort of in-depth analysis of how/why the movie made a contribution, did what business it did at the box office, and (more importantly) why they never made Part 2 (and more importantly why we then had to wait for the Rankin-Bass cap-to-the-entire-series and then another 20 or so years until Peter Jackson's version came out).



There are some nice bits on the filming in Spain that was later used for the rotoscopic animation work but not nearly as much material as there should be.



Additionally, the restoration work on the film print doesn't seem to have done much for it's quality.
