#@: Harry Potter the Philosopher s Stone Blu ray

Outside the US, the rest of the world knows the first Harry Potter book and film as "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone." This is the blue ray version of that first film. Actually the only differences in the US and British (Though this disc is probably the Canadian edition since it is region 1) versions is virtually wherever the characters say "sorcerer's stone" in the US version, they say "philosopher's stone" in the British version. Frankly I prefer the British version. This is a one disc blue ray product. The resolution is superb throughout the movie. This disc has the movie and the following special features: Additional Scenes; Capturing the Stone: Casting and Bringing the Novel to Life; Around the World Multilanguage Lips; Ghosts of Hogwarts; Yearbook Character Clips; Lesons in Qudditch and What It Takes To Hatch a Dragon Egg; Theatrical Trailers.

I particularly enjoyed watching this high resolution blue ray disc looking for those items that will be in the Deathly Hallows: the put-outter; Griphook the Goblin; the vaults of Gringotts; the first time the various characters met; the interaction between Dudley and Harry; and, of course, Snap's interactions with Harry.

I highly recommend this blue ray edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

$ An American in Paris Blu ray

An American in Paris [Blu-ray]I forgot to order this when Gigi came available at the same time on Blu Ray and just now caught up with it. I am more than happy with the restoration and have nothing to complain about. And the price is just right, too!! A nice night's entertainment. At one time there was a lot of outtake audio of Gene Kelly on a laserbox set and I was hoping some, at least, would appear here. Maybe when they release Singin' in the Rain(1952)it might have some. I believe that one is in the works now.

++ The Thomas Crown Affair Blu ray

I'm not going to do a movie critique. The Affair's remake is more than 10 years old and everything worth saying about contents, cinematography and actors' acting and looks has been said already. Suffices for me to say that this is a flick I enjoy watching whenever I feel like relaxing, probably because I like watching Pierce Brosnan. Also, it turns out, The Thomas Crown Affair was the first DVD I ever bought - selection was scarce back in 1999. Which partially explains why I ordered the Blu-ray. Sadly, what the postman brought was somewhat disappointing.

So, here is my objective evaluation of the Blu-ray edition.

        - It comes in a cheap case. The kind with holes cut into the plastic walls so that maybe a couple of pennies are saved this way.

        - It includes both the Blu disc and a double-sided DVD with the so-called 'full screen' on one side and the 'wide screen' version on the other.

        - There are no extras whatsoever on the Blu disc.

        - The DVD disc, apparently has one 'extra' - audio commentary by director John McTiernan

        - Sound is 5.1 DTS-HD

        - Alternative soundtracks are available in Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese as 5.1 DTS and in mono for Russian, Hungarian, Turkish and Thai.

The Blu-ray transfer is just okay. The movie looks and sounds good but I imagine there is some industrial process these days where you throw a DVD into the Blu-ray converter machine and the Blu version comes out automatically - better than the DVD and not much human artist or technician intervention is required. There is nothing outstanding or worth writing about when it comes to this Blu-ray upgrade, other that my brand new, first time watched, unscratched copy skips in two places.

This is the first Blu-ray disc ever that skipped on my player. After almost 3 years of Blu-ray watching, I didn't know what Blu-ray skipping looks like. Now I know - the picture disappears for a few seconds, then it reappears. I know that it's skipping, not an equipment issue because I replayed the parts that skipped and was able to reproduce it - probably due to some low quality, cheap process used to produce the discs.

I really hesitated between a 3-star rating which means "It's Okay" and a 2-star which stands for "I don't like it". In the end, the "I don't like it" won. I can't recommend this Blu-ray as a purchase, especially to those who already have the DVD. I understand that studios need to make money but, my friends, the quality of this release borders 'junk' grade and we should not encourage the proliferation of such releases by buying them. I am sorry I spent money on my copy and, had I known before ordering what I know now, I would not have placed my order.

$ Star Trek The Original Series Season 1 Blu ray

Currently I've watch only 2 disc's and they are very well remastered (Personal opinion only). The 7.1 sound quality is a bit above average but is an improvement over the mono recording. I found the colors excellent and vibrant. I recommend this Blu-Ray to anyone who grew up watching the original series. I haven't purchased the Second or Third Season yet so I don't know about them. I would believe them to be as good as Season one. Overall on a scale of 1 - 10 I would give them an 8.5 and that's only because they are remastered.

$ The Bank Job Blu ray Digital Copy

I wasn't familiar with the Baker Street robbery that took place in London in the early '70s and provides the source material for this British picture. The "Bank Job" has a lot to really like, but at the top of my list was the amazing recreation of 1971 London --- from the streets of the city to the styling of the clothing and hair of the characters. This amazing attention to time and place, along with the stellar ensemble cast of petty criminals, immediately sets the tone for this movie and transports you back to the time of post-60s disillusionment.

Unlike other suspense films, "The Bank Job" doesn't have so many twists and turns that it leaves you confused and frustrated trying to piece together an elaborate jigsaw puzzle. Perhaps this is because it is based on a true story and the screenplay remains true to the real life events. I'm still surprised that these petty thieves were able to get away with such a preposterous bank heist. "The Bank Job" is an entertaining, fast paced and engaging movie that is well worth a viewing.
