#$ The Fugitive Blu ray

Please note that I saw this movie on TV so I can't speak to the quality of the video transfer or its features (although, based on the negative reviews here, it sounds like it wasn't that good).



I watched this movie recently after a hiatus of 17 years and it held up very well. Despite the length of the movie, it never drags and the suspense just keeps mounting from beginning to end. I read that the train wreck was real, in an age before CGI, making that one of the great action sequences of all time.



Lee and Ford are perfect in their roles, and the supporting cast does an excellent job as well. There are just no false notes anywhere with the characters in this movie, not to mention all the spellbinding action. You're better off watching this one again on a slow night rather than most of the stuff currently coming out of Hollywood.



My only quip is that I think the phony tissue samples would have been discovered during the drug's FDA approval process--especially considering they were said to be from the same liver--but this is a minor point considering the movie's overall strengths. All in all still a great flick that rewards watching more than once.

When I popped this puppy in the good old DVD player I had no idea what to expect. The only thing I knew going in was it was an independent horror movie. Now based off the majority of independent horror movies I have seen, there was a potential and/or formula for disaster. However, once I finished my viewing, I was pleasantly surprised.



I am not going to rehash the plot too much; many other reviewers have already done so. Basically, a young woman named Claire played by Lauren Currie Lewis (who looks like a young Alicia Silverstone and young Kim Raver combo) is a convenient store clerk who works the graveyard shift. Well Claire appears to have a problem; no matter what she does she keeps bumping into "Duke" (Chris Ferry).



Duke isn't your normal guy; as a matter of fact he is rather morbid. The problem Claire has is she keeps getting "killed" by Duke. Yes I said "keeps"; once she is killed she ends up starting her day all over again. Alternately, no matter how Claire's day goes she will bump into Duke and is going to meet her demise. This film sort of has a "Groundhog's Day" feel to it, but with an ominous and austere distortion.



The acting is pretty solid; Lewis does a pretty good job as the lead and for the most part is believable (given the circumstances of the plot). Chris Ferry's performance as the psychopath is a little hit and miss. There are times he is creepy and then down right daft. The one character who was a little insipid was the guy who played Claire's boyfriend. He's antics were crude and vexing which I felt did nothing for the plot, if anything it brought the movie down a level.



This being an independent movie, it had a "made on a shoe string budget" feel to it. Honestly, I liked it and found it very refreshing. There were some elements in this movie were a little "silly", but I don't think it influence the final product. Digress, I have seen many independent horror movies and more times than I can count they fall back on tons of nudity, profanity, blood and guts and lack of plot. Not that I have ANYTHING against the former "techniques" of horror movie making, but it is invigorating to see something a little different.



Overall I found this to be a nice little gem that was well written and directed. I also found the score to be hypotonic (the bands were sub par). The film seems a little disconnected while it is being revealed, but ties up all loose ends before the credits roll. I would recommend this movie to any horror movie buff.

#$ Samurai Champloo The Complete Series Blu ray

This is one of the best anime's ever made. It is eclipsed only by Cowboy Bebop. I had been wanting to get it on DVD for a while, and recently got a Blue Ray player. Saw this for a great price and could not pass it up. If you are a fan you know this show is worth getting on Blue Ray. If you have never seen it before, do yourself a favor and pick it up and join the search for the samurai that smells of sunflowers.

#@: The Neverending Story Blu ray

Thanks to the producers of this bluray disc......the Neverending Story had been all but forgotten. It was made back in the 80's and was well before CGI was with us.

We saw it whilst in Europe on one of the satellite providers...then in 4:3 format and with 2 channel stereo...we taped it tback then....the VHS is still around...why bother when this classic children's tale has been released in full wide screen and five channel sound.

Made in Germany the Neverending story is a tribute to the excellent work of Bavaria Film Studios.

If you see this film for the first time it is hard to believe there were no computers creating the special effects. "All done on film"

There's a Never Ending Story two...so far not on Blu Ray......we'll be looking out for this if it too goes into an HD release.

$ National Geographic Relentless Enemies Blu ray

This has got to rank among the best documentaries on African wildlife I've ever seen. It focuses on lions and cape buffalo in Botswana's Okavango Delta. Even though lions and cape buffalo are two of the most filmed animals on the savannah, National Geographic - Relentless Enemies manages to capture a lot of interesting and new sequences. Many of the scenes show lions wading through or hunting in swamps. The movie is replete with hunting scenes, often bloody and dramatic, with competing charges from the lion prides and buffalo herds. Later on, hyenas join the fray and chase off lions from their kills.



The footage itself is beautiful, especially on the blu-ray version. The filmmakers really captured Africa's vivid colors, including the bold green of the grasses, blues of the river, and gold of the lions. I had the joy of visiting Africa and seeing lions and cape buffalo up close, and I can say National Geographic - Relentless Enemies is as close as I've gotten to that experience through a documentary. You can even see the flies swarming around the buffalos.



I find it tough to love any wildlife documentary narration except for BBC's David Attenborough, but I thought Jeremy Irons did a great job in National Geographic - Relentless Enemies. Irons (who also voiced Scar from The Lion King) adds a great ominous mood to the film. His opening line captures the relationship between these two animals perfectly: "There are prey, there are hunters... and there are enemies."
