#$ District 9 Blu ray

Presented by Peter Jackson, "District 9" is a unique take on sci-fi action with character-driven story. The film begins with "documentary" footage of a huge spaceship that arrives from outer space. It appears over the city of Johannesburg and hovers there for more than 28 years. The aliens that have come with the machinery are all contained in the area "District 9." Now the government and human citizens alike want them go away.

Wikus Van De Merwe (Sharlto Copley) works for a big corporation, Multi-National United. He is assigned to relocate (forcibly) the unwelcome visitors from outer space, now residents of the city's now notorious "District 9," to another place where the government promises a better life. Things go terribly wrong for bureaucratic MNU employee Wikus, however, when he stumbles upon a mysterious cylinder with black matter in it. Not exactly a bad person, but Wikus is kind of a man who always does something he is not supposed to do.

What ensues is a tale of an unlikely hero trapped in two or more rival factions. The entertaining story is told with lots of actions and a bit of dark humor.

Film fans may point out that some of the film's subject matters have been explored before (the 1988 film "Alien Nation" directed by Graham Baker, for instance). Sometimes science fictions with aliens from outer space can be a metaphor for immediate political issues. Director Neill Blomkamp may not be as sophisticated or psychological as, say, Don Siegel and his classic "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" - "District 9" contains considerable amount of gores and graphic violence - but the film works nonetheless, with thrilling actions and characters you care.

$*$ Extract Blu ray

This movie is soooo bad that Amazon.com should allow for a zero star rating.

I saw it for free and was upset at the time I lost.

I are better off watching Hangover or Big Bang Theory again.

-- Nixon Blu ray

The Blu-ray release of Nixon is of a high standard. The picture combines a lot of stock footage and new film purposely degraded to look old and to match in with the old but the 'present day' scenes look fantastic in high definition. I never owned this on DVD but I have read reviews saying it was a pretty poor transfer - never fear, Blu-ray is here! Clocking-in at three and a half hours you want it to be as pleasant a viewing experience as possible, and it looks great. The sound is solid too. The only fault I noticed was a couple of instances of a blue line running through the picture in the center of the screen at the 2 hour 35 minute mark - watching the additional disc's deleted scenes, which have nearly all been returned to the movie, confirmed the presence of these blue lines in the original film - why this problem wasn't dealt with during Blu-ray mastering is a mystery but it's a very small fault. While the deleted scenes are now in the movie it is still interesting to hear Oliver Stone's explanations as to why they were cut (time of course...every scene seems to be one of his favorites!). The extras are, as so often is the case, not in Hi-def and the source tape of the Charlie Rose Show interview is pretty poor but interesting to see all the same. You will be very happy with the quality of the main film transfer to Blu-ray - enjoy.

$*$ Star Trek VIII First Contact Remastered Blu ray

This is my 1st Blue Ray movie. I didn't have the DVD version to compare with, but the video color and resolution are fabulous, and the audio is great. (Of course, I could be biased as a long-time fan.)

$ John Adams Blu ray

I was disappointed by the level of unnecessary violence and nudity in this DVD. The tar and feather scene is graphic and shows full nudity--despite the fact that historically many tar and feather attacks only involved being stripped to the waste. There were other overly graphic violent scenes that I don't think were necessary to telling the story.

!$ The Other Man Blu ray

It seems that for most of the "critics" on this film need to be hammered over the head by writing and direction before they can appreciate a movie. The nay-sayers of "The Other Man" must have all the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies in their very limited collection.

The above is to preface my amazement and gratitude to all those involved in the making of this marvelous work. The performances of all involved are riveting and the atmosphere of Milan and the English countryside hold the viewer's interest in this complex story of revenge, betrayal, lies and finally real love.

I won't give anything away, but, if you liked "Vertigo", you will be quickly drawn into this provocative study of loss and redemption.

Enough said!
